Start by recording where and when ants appear, then remove accessible food and address moisture. If you use bait, choose a product whose current label explicitly permits the intended indoor use and target ant, and follow every label instruction. If activity persists or you cannot identify the ant, ask your local cooperative extension service or a qualified pest-management professional for guidance.
Why ants may keep appearing—and what you can establish
Repeated sightings do not, by themselves, identify the ant, its entry point, or the reason it is appearing in your home. Do not assume that a previous treatment failed for one particular reason. First gather observations that can help you choose a safe next step or explain the problem to a local expert.
Make a simple activity record
- Note the room and exact spot where ants appear.
- Look for visible trails and possible entry points, without assuming that the trail reveals the nest.
- Record when you see activity and whether it is near food or moisture.
- If you are unsure of the ant, avoid naming a species based on appearance alone.
Reduce what may attract ants
Clean up accessible food and crumbs, store food securely, and address moisture you can readily correct. These are sensible household steps, but sightings alone do not prove that food or moisture is the cause of a recurring problem in a particular home.
How to choose and use ant bait safely
Indoor ant bait is a product category, not a guarantee that any station will work for every ant. Products differ in permitted locations, placement directions, and target pests. Check the current label before buying or using a product; the label, not general advice about bait, determines whether it fits your situation.

Check the current product label
- Confirm that the label allows the specific indoor location where you intend to use the bait.
- Check that the target ant is covered by the product’s claims. For example, one EPA label for Hormikol describes common household ants but excludes carpenter, harvester, fire, and pharaoh ants from those claims. That limitation applies to that product’s label; it should not be assumed to apply to every bait.
- Read the directions for where and how to place the product, along with all precautions.
Place and protect bait as directed
When the selected label directs placement near ant activity, use the observed activity record to identify an appropriate spot. Keep bait inaccessible to children and pets. A Hormikol label also says not to apply other pesticides or chemicals onto bait placements; check the selected product’s own instructions rather than assuming labels are identical.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises: “Always read and follow the pesticide label’s instructions and safety warnings.” See EPA’s Do’s and Don’ts of Pest Control. Do not use a product in a way its label does not permit.

When to ask for local help
If ants continue to appear, or you cannot confidently identify them, contact your local cooperative extension service for area-specific recommendations or consult a qualified pest-management professional. Share the locations and timing you recorded and the product label if you have used bait. The observations can inform advice, but they do not establish the nest location or guarantee a particular treatment will solve the problem.
EPA recommends seeking local cooperative extension guidance for recommendations suited to your area: EPA guidance on getting pest-control help. A professional is an option for diagnosis and local guidance; recurring sightings alone do not mean that paid service is mandatory.
