Midstream energy stocks are driven by how reliably a company can turn its pipelines, gathering systems, processing plants, storage and terminals into cash flow. Contract terms determine how much revenue is protected when flows fall; producer activity, demand and asset utilization influence volumes; commodity prices affect some businesses directly and others indirectly. Debt, capital spending and investor expectations also shape the share price. A fee-based business can dampen direct commodity-price exposure, but it does not make a stock immune to operating, financial or market risks.
How midstream operations translate into a stock price
Midstream companies connect oil and gas production with storage, processing and end markets. Their revenue can depend on reserved capacity, a fee for each unit handled, a share of commodity proceeds, or a combination of these arrangements. Those operating revenues contribute to cash flow, but a stock price also reflects what investors expect future cash flows to be, along with financing costs, project risks and the valuation investors assign to the business.
Company filings explain these business and financing channels; they do not establish a single sector-wide formula linking any one operating metric to stock returns. A change in throughput or commodity prices therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed or immediate share-price catalyst.
How much do contracts protect revenue?
Contract structure determines whether a company is paid mainly for actual flows or can collect revenue when volumes fall. Firm-service charges, fixed demand charges, cost-of-service arrangements and minimum-volume commitments may provide protection, subject to the specific agreement. Interruptible or flow-based service is generally more sensitive to volumes actually transported or processed.

“Take-or-pay” is not a safe blanket description for every midstream contract. A minimum-volume commitment, deficiency payment or fixed demand charge can have different terms and triggers. To judge the protection, check what assets and capacity it covers, how long it lasts, how a shortfall is calculated, whether fees escalate, and the customer’s ability and obligation to pay.
| Issuer and reporting period | Company-reported contract metric | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Western Midstream Partners, LP, 2025 | Excluding equity investments, 97% of wellhead natural-gas volume and 100% of crude-oil and produced-water throughput were under fee-based contracts. | Western Midstream also describes minimum-volume and cost-of-service commitments as volume-risk mitigants. These are issuer-specific figures, not sector averages. |
| ONEOK, Inc., 2025 | Approximately 90% of consolidated earnings were fee-based. | A fee-based earnings mix does not eliminate the company’s other commodity and operating exposures. |
| DT Midstream, Inc., 2024 | Approximately 92% of Pipeline segment revenue and 99% of unconsolidated joint-venture revenue came from firm-service contracts. | These 2024 figures describe DT Midstream’s contract mix, not a typical pipeline company’s mix. |
Each percentage uses its issuer’s own stated measure—volume, earnings or revenue—so the figures are not directly comparable as if they described the same thing. They show how individual businesses report their protections, not a guarantee that revenue or cash flow will remain unchanged.

Why volumes and producer activity still matter
Gathering systems often depend on production connected to their network. More drilling and development can increase throughput and asset utilization, but the effect depends on available capacity, rates and contract terms. Transmission and storage businesses may instead receive charges for reserved capacity or service, making their revenue less dependent on actual flows in some arrangements.
Producer budgets and basin economics can affect volumes with a lag. Antero Midstream reports that its throughput and cash flows can be influenced by Antero Resources’ drilling and development plan even though its existing operations are paid under fee-based contracts. Its filing also discusses counterparty concentration, contract renegotiation and renewal, and interruptions at interconnected third-party facilities.

Demand from power generation, industry, petrochemicals, refining and export markets also affects where supply flows and how infrastructure is used. Weather, outages, competing routes and new capacity can change utilization. ONEOK identifies producer drilling, proximity to supply and markets, operational efficiency, delivery capabilities and end-market conditions among the factors affecting competition. Its filing also describes seasonal demand shifts, extreme temperatures, storms, freeze-offs and power interruptions as possible influences on volumes.
How oil and gas prices affect midstream companies
Commodity exposure depends on the mix of services and contracts. A fee per unit handled is generally less directly tied to the market price of oil or gas than a contract based on a percentage of proceeds, retained products or commodity sales. However, a fee-based contract does not insulate a company from every price-related risk.

ONEOK describes itself as primarily fee-based while reporting exposure to percent-of-proceeds contracts, natural gas liquids and refined-product prices, geographic price differentials, power costs, and optimization and marketing activities. Hedging may reduce some price effects; it does not prove that exposure has disappeared.
Prices can also affect volumes indirectly. If commodity prices change producer economics, a customer may adjust its drilling plans, eventually changing the supply available to a gathering or pipeline system. The timing and size of that effect depend on the basin, producer finances and hedges, available takeaway capacity and the relevant contract. Antero Midstream describes this link between commodity prices, its customer’s development plan and its own service volumes, while noting low direct commodity exposure in its existing fee-based operations.

How financing and capital spending influence the equity
Midstream infrastructure requires capital for maintenance, expansions and new projects. Companies may fund that spending with operating cash, debt or equity. Interest expense and credit standing affect financing costs and access to capital, while covenant limits can constrain financial choices. DT Midstream says its credit ratings affect its cost of capital and financing access.
Cash used for debt service or projects is not available for other purposes. Distribution decisions therefore depend on a company’s cash generation, capital requirements and financial position as well as its stated policy. DT Midstream says future dividends are subject to board approval and depend on business and financing conditions; an announced or historical distribution is not a guarantee of future payments.
What to compare when evaluating midstream stocks
Use each company’s latest filings and compare the same categories. Report figures with their issuer and fiscal year: a percentage from one business or reporting period should not be treated as a sector benchmark.
- Revenue protection: Separate firm or demand-charge revenue from charges that depend on actual throughput. Review minimum-volume commitments, deficiency-payment terms, contract duration and renewal provisions.
- Customers and supply: Check customer concentration, customer credit and the company’s exposure to particular producers or basins. DT Midstream’s 2024 filing, for example, said Expand Energy accounted for approximately 56% of its operating revenues that year; this is a historical concentration example, not a current customer mix.
- Commodity sensitivity: Identify fee-based, percent-of-proceeds, retained-product and marketing activity, as well as exposure to price differentials and energy costs.
- Asset position and use: Examine connections to production and end markets, throughput trends, available capacity, competing routes and the effect of outages or operating constraints.
- Financial flexibility: Review leverage, debt maturities, interest expense, credit ratings, capital spending needs, covenant limits and distribution coverage.
- Expectations and valuation: Consider whether the share price already reflects expected project growth, cash flows, interest rates and risk. Operating stability alone does not establish whether a stock is attractively valued.
Issuer disclosures are useful for understanding what a company reports about its contracts and risks, but company descriptions are not independent sector forecasts. Read the terms and metrics in context rather than assuming that two businesses’ labels—such as “fee-based”—mean equal protection.
