Red Barrels’ July 14, 2026 rules say that Escalation progress is saved only after a Trial is completed successfully, and that an unexpected disconnect allows five minutes to rejoin the ongoing run. If everyone leaves, disconnects, or fails during a Trial, the run fails and its save is voided. These rules are specific to Escalation; they do not establish how every other mode handles saves.
First, identify the mode and what happened
The recovery options depend on whether you were playing Escalation, whether the Trial had ended, and whether one player or the whole group disconnected. Red Barrels’ current published details cover Escalation, not all multiplayer modes.
- Escalation, one player unexpectedly disconnected: attempt to rejoin the ongoing run promptly; the documented window is five minutes.
- Escalation, Trial completed before the interruption: progress is saved upon successful completion.
- Escalation, everyone left, disconnected, or failed during the Trial: the run is failed and its save is voided.
- Another mode: the cited official information does not establish the same save or rejoin rules.
These Escalation conditions come from Red Barrels’ Season 7: Project Boneyard patch notes, published July 14, 2026.
How Escalation saves progress and handles a disconnect
Only the host carries the save
Under the July 2026 Escalation rules, the host carries the run’s save; other players cannot independently continue that saved run. The group leader may resume a saved run when the group is in the lobby. If you are not the host, coordinate with the host or group leader rather than assuming your own game can restore the run.

Progress is saved between successfully completed Trials
Red Barrels states: “Progress is only saved upon successfully completing a Trial.” That means an active Trial that has not been completed successfully is not a saved checkpoint. A disconnect during an unfinished Trial is different from losing progress after the group has completed a Trial.
One unexpected disconnect has a five-minute rejoin window
If one player unexpectedly disconnects during an ongoing Escalation run, try to rejoin within five minutes. This is a grace period to rejoin the ongoing run, not a guarantee that an unfinished Trial or a run will be restored after the group has failed or the window has passed.
If the whole group is gone, the run is failed
Red Barrels says an Escalation run fails and its save is voided if all players quit, disconnect, or fail during a Trial. The published rule does not describe a way to restore that voided run.
What to do when disconnects keep happening
- Record the incident details: note your platform, game mode, exact error message, approximate time, and whether one player or the entire group disconnected. This is useful context to include in a support request, not a publisher-required checklist.
- Report recurring in-game issues to Red Barrels: its The Outlast Trials support archive directs players to its official 18+ Discord ticketing system for in-game issues.
- If you use Steam, consult its listed support contacts: Steam’s The Outlast Trials technical-issue page lists Red Barrels’ customer support website and email.
The available official sources do not provide a general, platform-wide troubleshooting sequence for multiplayer disconnections. They do not verify DNS changes, router or cable purchases, reinstalling, or local-file changes as fixes for this specific issue, so there is no supported basis here to promise those steps will recover a run or stop disconnections.

What these rules do—and do not—tell you
The documented Escalation rules clarify who holds the save, when progress is saved, the rejoin grace period, and what happens if the entire group is out during a Trial. They do not identify the network cause of a disconnect, establish a general fix for other modes, or show how often players experience the problem. For other modes, do not assume Escalation’s host-save and five-minute rules apply.
