Whether an AI agent can see texts depends on the specific assistant, feature, app permissions, and connections you enable. Reading conversation history, seeing message notifications, sending texts, and processing text you share yourself are separate capabilities. Check the named feature and its data-handling settings rather than assuming every AI in a messaging app has the same access.
What “can read my texts” can mean
An AI feature may interact with messages in several different ways. A permission that lets it compose or send a text does not necessarily let it search existing conversations. Notification access may expose message previews without granting access to the messaging app’s full history. And if you paste, forward, or upload a conversation, the content has been supplied to the AI service even if it had no device-level access to your messages.
- Conversation history: Can the assistant open or search messages already stored in the app?
- Notifications: Can it see message text appearing in notifications?
- Sending: Can it draft or send a message on your behalf?
- Content you share: What happens to text you manually submit to the service?
- Retention and use: Is submitted content saved, used to improve models, or available for later deletion?
These questions have different answers, even for features from the same company.
How documented AI features handle messages
The examples below illustrate why a single yes-or-no answer is misleading. They describe specific products and features, not every AI tool, phone, or messaging app.

Can Gemini read your texts on Android?
Google’s documentation distinguishes the Messages integration from notification access. The Messages integration requires the Google app to have SMS permission and can compose and send texts, but Google says it cannot read or summarize messages directly from the messaging app. Turning off Messages does not necessarily remove other access: if the relevant permissions and connection are enabled, Gemini may still access device contacts or notifications.
Google documents the device-assistance app as the route for Gemini to read or reply to messages in notifications, including WhatsApp notifications. That is different from opening the Messages app’s stored conversation history. The exact access therefore depends on which feature is enabled and which permissions are granted.

To review the documented Gemini connection, open Gemini’s Connected Apps settings and check whether Messages is connected. Review Android permissions for SMS, contacts, and notifications, and check whether Gemini is set as the device-assistance app. Google’s support page provides the current product-specific details; labels and behavior can change with software updates.
Are Meta AI chats and WhatsApp messages private?
WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted. For certain AI features that use personal-message context, WhatsApp describes Private Processing as allowing Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp being able to read those messages. This is a claim about the specified feature and processing method, not a blanket guarantee for every AI interaction or agent on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp also describes Incognito Chat as a temporary conversation that is not visible to Meta or WhatsApp and disappears when the user exits. Meta’s May 2026 announcement says Incognito Chat runs in a secure environment Meta says it cannot access, with conversations not saved and messages disappearing by default. Feature availability and rollout can vary, so check whether the feature is available in your app and read its current in-app explanation.
A third-party agent on WhatsApp is a separate service. WhatsApp says those agents are independently created and operated, and may have their own terms and privacy policies. Do not assume the protections described for Meta AI apply to another provider’s agent.

What happens to text you share with an AI service?
When you paste, forward, or upload a conversation, the important question shifts from device permission to the receiving service’s handling of submitted content. Review its account settings, history controls, training choices, and deletion policy before sharing sensitive material.
For ChatGPT accessed through Apple integrations, OpenAI says data handling depends on whether an account is connected and on the account’s settings. OpenAI says requests made without an account are processed to provide a safe response and comply with applicable laws; it says it does not receive the user’s IP address, store those requests, or use them to train models. When an account is connected, account data preferences apply, and interactions may be saved in history or used to improve services depending on the user’s choices and use. Temporary Chat in ChatGPT apps or on the website is described as not being saved in the account or used for model improvement.

That Apple-integration description concerns service-side handling of requests. It does not show that ChatGPT can inspect texts stored on a phone.
How to check an AI agent before using it with messages
- Name the exact assistant and feature. Identify whether you mean a message suggestion, a connected assistant, notification reading, a chatbot account, or a third-party agent.
- Review operating-system permissions. Check SMS, notifications, contacts, and any assistant-role or accessibility settings that apply to the feature. On Android, Google specifically documents SMS permission for Gemini’s Messages integration and notification access through the device-assistance app.
- Inspect connected-app settings. Disconnect integrations you no longer want enabled. Google identifies Gemini’s Connected Apps settings as the place to disconnect Messages.
- Separate sending from reading. Confirm whether the feature can access history, notifications, or only compose and send. Do not infer history access from a send capability.
- Check what happens to submitted content. If you share a conversation manually, review the provider’s retention, deletion, and model-improvement settings for that content.
- For a WhatsApp third-party agent, check its provider. Read that service’s own terms and privacy policy rather than relying on protections documented for Meta AI.
What to compare when choosing between agents
Compare the particular feature—not just the brand name—across these dimensions:
- Does it access message history, notification previews, or only text you provide?
- Which permission, account connection, or app setting enables that access?
- Can it read, summarize, compose, or send messages?
- Does the provider describe content as being transmitted to a service, and how does it say the content is processed?
- Are prompts, chat history, or screenshots retained, and what controls are available to delete them?
- What training or model-improvement choices apply, and how can you disconnect the feature?
The published examples here do not establish the behavior of every SMS, iMessage, RCS client, phone manufacturer, AI vendor, account type, or jurisdiction. Product features and permission labels can change; use the current documentation and settings for the exact assistant and device you have.
