Dan Houser’s announced A Better Paradise game is a separate project, not a playable alternative: Smilegate described it as an open-world sci-fi action-adventure in early development in its August 7, 2025 announcement, without giving a release date. For crime action with driving and hand-to-hand combat: Sleeping Dogs
Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is the most direct pick if the appeal of GTA is a crime story unfolding in a city, with vehicles and action between missions. Its protagonist, Wei Shen, is an undercover detective in Hong Kong. The cited descriptions emphasize martial-arts combat, street races, vehicles, and an open-world crime setting. GameSpot’s overview and GamesRadar+’s roundup both support that comparison.
The important difference is the feel of combat: martial arts have a more prominent role than in GTA. Choose it for undercover-crime drama and physical fights, not because you expect an identical mix of gunplay and free-roaming crime.

Choose Just Cause 4 Reloaded for traversal and destruction
Just Cause 4 Reloaded is the better match if the fun you want is moving dramatically through a huge sandbox and wrecking things. Smilegate’s official newsroom announcement on August 7, 2025 said it would globally publish an AAA open-world science-fiction action-adventure set in A Better Paradise, with development funding planned. It described the game as being in early development and said Houser would write and creatively direct alongside Lazlow and Michael Unsworth. That project is distinct from GTA. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page describes Jason and Lucia in Vice City and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. A new Houser project is not a substitute for GTA VI, and GTA VI is not a game to play while waiting for itself; the alternatives above address particular parts of the open-world crime experience.
