Ivanti’s January 2024 response involved four vulnerabilities in Connect Secure and Policy Secure, with CVE-2024-21893 also affecting Ivanti Neurons for ZTA. SecurityWeek reported on January 31 that Ivanti had begun a staggered rollout of fixes after missing its expected patch timeline. The issues included authentication bypass, command injection, privilege escalation and a SAML server-side request forgery (SSRF); exploitation had been confirmed or reported with targeted activity, depending on the flaw.

Which Ivanti products and vulnerabilities were involved?

SecurityWeek’s January 31, 2024 report covered four CVEs. It identified Connect Secure and Policy Secure as affected by the vulnerabilities below; CVE-2024-21893 also affected Neurons for ZTA. The product-version ranges listed here are those reported by SecurityWeek, not a current support or patch matrix.

CVE Issue Affected products and versions reported CVSS score reported Exploitation reported
CVE-2023-46805 Authentication bypass in the web component Connect Secure 9.x and 22.x; Policy Secure 8.2 Confirmed exploited as a zero-day
CVE-2024-21887 Command injection in web components Connect Secure 9.x and 22.x; Policy Secure 9.1 Exploitation confirmed
CVE-2024-21888 Privilege escalation in the web component Connect Secure 9.x and 22.x; Policy Secure 9.x and 22.x 8.8 SecurityWeek reported exploitation in connection with the four vulnerabilities; its specific wording for this CVE does not distinguish a separate confirmation qualifier
CVE-2024-21893 Server-side request forgery in the SAML component Connect Secure, Policy Secure and Neurons for ZTA 8.2 Targeted exploitation confirmed

CVSS values are the scores SecurityWeek attributed to FIRST in its 2024 report. They describe severity, not whether a particular appliance is currently supported or which corrective build applies. For CVE-2024-21887, the report said an authenticated administrator could send specially crafted requests to execute arbitrary commands on the appliance.

What was reported about exploitation?

SecurityWeek attributed the initial discovery to Volexity, which it said spotted exploitation roughly three weeks before the report. It also reported that Mandiant described “broad exploitation activity” and that China-linked actors had targeted the vulnerabilities as early as December 3, 2023. The article described a Chinese government-backed APT targeting U.S. organizations. These are accounts of activity reported in January 2024, not an assessment of current threat activity.

Before public disclosure, Ivanti reportedly knew of “less than 20 customers” impacted. SecurityWeek provided no further victim details. That figure is a pre-disclosure count attributed to Ivanti, not a final tally of affected organizations.

Did Ivanti patch the vulnerabilities?

SecurityWeek reported on January 31, 2024 that Ivanti had started a staggered rollout of fixes after struggling to meet its expected patch timeline. That historical report does not establish whether a particular appliance has a fix available now, whether its version remains supported, or which build or mitigation applies.

For operational decisions, use Ivanti’s current security advisory for the exact product and version in question: Ivanti security update for Connect Secure and Policy Secure. Check the advisory’s affected-version list and follow its current patch or mitigation steps; do not infer build numbers or commands from the January 2024 news report.

What should administrators do after the Ivanti VPN exploit?

  1. Identify exposure. Inventory Connect Secure, Policy Secure and Neurons for ZTA deployments, record their installed versions, and compare each one with Ivanti’s current advisory.
  2. Apply the vendor’s applicable action. Follow Ivanti’s instructions for the exact product and version. If a listed correction is unavailable or the version is unsupported, use the advisory’s current mitigation guidance and contact Ivanti support for a supported path.
  3. Assess possible compromise separately from patching. A fix addresses the vulnerability; it does not establish that an appliance was never compromised. If the device was exposed during the relevant period or shows suspicious activity, preserve relevant evidence and engage qualified incident responders to assess it.
  4. Document remediation. Record affected devices, versions, actions taken and investigation outcomes. Apply any reporting requirements that currently govern your organization; do not treat historical federal deadlines as active instructions.

What was the federal response in January 2024?

SecurityWeek reported that CISA’s emergency directive set January 22, 2024 for federal civilian agencies to begin deploying fixes and removing compromised products from networks. The report also said infected organizations were instructed to submit an inventory of infected devices and actions taken. Those were historical deadlines and response requirements, not current deadlines for all organizations.
