If an unwanted text appears to come from a real business or service, send a clear opt-out such as STOP or UNSUBSCRIBE. If it looks suspicious, don’t click links or share information: block and report it instead. You can also filter messages on your phone, contact your wireless carrier, and report spam to the appropriate U.S. agency. The sender’s use of AI does not, by itself, determine whether a text is illegal.
First, decide whether it is safe to reply
A display name or an unexpected claim is not proof that a message is genuine. If a text asks for personal or financial information, avoid its links and don’t provide details in a reply. If it claims to be from an organization you use, verify the request through a website or phone number you already know is authentic—not through contact information in the message.
For a message you reasonably identify as coming from a legitimate business or service, a direct opt-out is usually the best first step. For a suspicious message, skip the reply and use blocking and reporting options instead.
Opt out of messages from a legitimate sender
Reply with a clear request to stop, such as STOP, QUIT, END, REVOKE, OPT OUT, CANCEL, or UNSUBSCRIBE. Under the FCC’s 2024 rulemaking, covered senders must honor a revocation request within a reasonable time, no later than ten business days. The rule permits one confirmation text.

Keep the message and your opt-out reply if you may need to document what happened. An opt-out affects the sender’s permission or contact list; it is different from blocking the sender on your phone.
Block or filter messages on your phone
Use your messaging app’s option to block the sender or report junk. Many phones also offer a setting to filter messages from unknown senders. Menu names and available controls vary by device and software version, so look in the messaging app’s conversation or settings menus.

Blocking limits messages reaching you through that channel, but it does not establish that the sender has stopped sending them. Your wireless provider may offer additional blocking or filtering tools; ask the provider what is available for your line.
Report spam texts
- Messaging app: Use its report-junk or report-spam option when available.
- Wireless provider: Forward the spam text to 7726 (SPAM). This gives the provider information about the message; it is not a guarantee of immediate individual resolution.
- FTC: Report suspected scams to the Federal Trade Commission.
- FCC: Submit an unwanted calls or texts complaint, or use the category for other unwanted calls or messages.
The FTC and FCC reporting routes are not the same as blocking: reporting provides information to the relevant organizations, while blocking and filtering help limit what reaches your device.

What to do if the texts continue
- For a legitimate sender: Make a clear opt-out request and retain the text and reply.
- For a suspicious sender: Do not engage or open links; block the number or conversation and report the message through your app or by forwarding it to 7726.
- If messages persist: Check your phone’s filtering settings, ask your carrier about its tools, and submit an FTC or FCC report as appropriate.
- If you contact an agency: Keep the dates, sender information, and message content so you can describe the conduct clearly.
The FCC says it does not resolve individual unwanted-call or text complaints. It explains that complaints provide information used to inform policy and may serve as a basis for enforcement actions. Filing a complaint therefore should not be treated as a promise that the FCC will stop messages to your number.

Whether a text is unlawful depends on the applicable rules and the circumstances of the message and how it was sent. FCC Order FCC 23-107 describes consent requirements under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act for certain calls and texts made using an automatic telephone dialing system or a prerecorded or artificial voice. It states that prior express written consent is required when a robotext includes or introduces an advertisement or constitutes telemarketing.

Those rules do not make every unwanted text illegal, and the fact that a sender uses AI is not, by itself, a legal test. This guidance is U.S.-focused; legal requirements and agency procedures can change.
