To read SSD SMART data, first identify whether the drive is NVMe or ATA/SATA and record its model; the fields do not mean the same thing across protocols or manufacturers. Then check the drive’s wear estimate, available spare, warning status, temperature against its own thresholds, and any media or data-integrity errors. SMART is useful evidence about reported health and use—not a guarantee that a drive will or will not fail.

How do I read an SSD SMART report?

  1. Identify the drive. Record its model, firmware, and whether it uses NVMe or ATA/SATA. Preserve the exact field names and values shown by your utility.
  2. Read the fields according to the protocol. NVMe reports named health-log fields. ATA/SATA commonly presents an attribute table, whose definitions and raw encodings may be manufacturer-specific.
  3. Check warnings and errors before drawing conclusions from wear. For NVMe, inspect each Critical Warning bit, available spare and its threshold, temperature, and media/data-integrity error count. For ATA/SATA, consult documentation for the exact model rather than assuming an attribute ID or raw value has a universal meaning.
  4. Assess change over time. Compare reports taken under similar conditions. Note accumulating errors, sustained high temperature, operational symptoms, workload, and power-on history; a single snapshot cannot establish a failure timeline.

On supported systems, smartctl -a DEVICE requests a broad report; replace DEVICE with the correct device identifier for your system. Access depends on the operating system, permissions, controller, and any bridge between the computer and drive. The smartctl documentation describes health, log, and attribute display options, including vendor-specific ATA handling.

What does Percentage Used mean on an NVMe SSD?

NVMe Percentage Used is the manufacturer’s estimate of how much of the NVM subsystem’s endurance has been consumed, based on actual use and the manufacturer’s prediction. It is not a failure probability, nor does it translate directly into a remaining-time countdown. NVM Express states: “A value of 100 indicates that the estimated endurance of the NVM in the NVM subsystem has been consumed, but may not indicate an NVM subsystem failure.” The value may also exceed 100. See the NVM Express Base Specification 2.0e.

Interpret the estimate alongside available spare, warning bits, media/data-integrity errors, workload, and the drive maker’s model-specific endurance or warranty information. Do not convert a percentage into months or years remaining without validated workload history and an explicitly documented method for that model.

How should I interpret available spare?

NVMe Available Spare is a normalized percentage of remaining spare capacity; it is different from Percentage Used. The health log also reports an available-spare threshold. Compare the spare value with that threshold: a value at or below the threshold is a critical warning condition. The smartmontools NVMe output documentation identifies these fields. Do not treat spare percentage as a second wear percentage or infer an exact remaining lifespan from it.

What does an NVMe Critical Warning mean?

Critical Warning is a bit field: its bits represent independent conditions, not a single score. Read the decoded condition or determine which bits are set rather than interpreting the hexadecimal value as a rating. The NVMe health log documents conditions including low spare, temperature threshold exceeded, degraded reliability, media placed in read-only mode, volatile-memory backup failure, and a persistent-memory region that became read-only or unreliable. The NVM Express specification defines the field, and smartmontools describes its displayed interpretations.

The warning reflects the state when the log is read; the byte alone does not diagnose the exact failed component. A warning for degraded reliability, read-only media, or low spare is consequential: back up valuable data and contact the drive vendor or your administrator. For a temperature warning, check the temperature guidance below.

What SSD temperature is too high?

There is no single temperature cutoff that applies to every NVMe SSD. The SMART/Health log reports a composite device temperature, while the controller identifies the drive-specific Warning Composite Temperature Threshold (WCTEMP) and Critical Composite Temperature Threshold (CCTEMP). Compare the reported temperature with those thresholds, not with an assumed universal limit. Microsoft’s NVME_HEALTH_INFO_LOG documentation describes the composite temperature field; the NVM Express specification covers threshold reporting.

A brief reading and a sustained threshold condition are not equivalent. If the drive approaches or exceeds its reported warning threshold repeatedly, or performance drops under load, check airflow, heatsink contact, workload, and the manufacturer’s guidance. A temperature warning indicates a threshold condition; the reading alone does not identify its cause.

How do ATA/SATA SMART attributes differ?

ATA SMART commonly shows an attribute ID, normalized value, threshold, and raw value. The meaning and encoding can vary by manufacturer and model, so a familiar ID or raw number should not be treated as a universal SSD health scale. Use the SSD maker’s documentation for that exact model. Keep the overall SMART status separate from individual attributes and error logs: one does not fully explain the others. The smartctl documentation describes ATA attributes as vendor-specific and explains its vendor-definition options.

Which signs deserve attention beyond a wear percentage?

Media and data-integrity errors matter alongside warning status. In NVMe output, check whether the media and data integrity error count is nonzero and whether it increases across reports. A zero Critical Warning field is not a promise against failure; back up important data and investigate accumulating errors or operational symptoms. smartmontools lists media errors and related values in its NVMe report documentation.

When comparing two drives or two reports, assess protocol and model-specific semantics, wear estimate and spare margin, warning bits and error trends, temperature relative to the drive’s own thresholds, and workload, power-on history, and backup status. No single SMART value is enough to rank drives or establish how long one will last. NVM Express also provides a SMART and health information explainer for context on health logs and warnings.
