Keep a separate archive until you have confirmed exactly what Umami can import and report: Umami advertises Google Analytics data migration, but the available documentation does not establish that every GA4 report, dimension, or event detail will transfer.
Plan the migration around the questions your analytics must answer
A tracker replacement is not a like-for-like report replacement by default. Before changing collection, list the questions stakeholders use analytics to answer, such as which channels bring visitors, which landing pages lead to conversions, and how campaigns perform. For each question, note the report, date range, filters, and measure people rely on.
Then record how each measure is produced. Include event names and parameters, trigger conditions, key events, domains, custom dimensions or metrics, and campaign-tagging conventions. A matching event label in GA4 and Umami does not prove the tools count it in the same way.
- Mark each report or measure as essential, useful, or no longer needed.
- For essential measures, identify the events, parameters, filters, and time zone that determine the result.
- Include less obvious dependencies, such as single-page application navigation, staging domains, and exclusions.
Preserve GA4 history before you replace collection
If BigQuery export is available for your property, configure it before cutover and verify which data streams and events are included. Google documents daily event tables and an optional continuous streaming export; administrators can select streams and exclude events, so export settings need to match your archive plan. Setup instructions and availability details are in Google’s BigQuery Export guide.
#1 Best Overall
The exported schema includes event names, timestamps, event parameters, and other event-specific fields. Daily tables use the name events_YYYYMMDD. Streaming export creates an events_intraday_YYYYMMDD table, which is replaced by the completed daily table. Google says daily tables can be updated for late-arriving events for up to three days after the event date, so do not treat an export as complete immediately after midnight. See the GA4 BigQuery Export schema.
BigQuery is an archive option, not a cost-free or universally available guarantee. Google notes that storage and query processing can incur charges; its sandbox has limits, and a valid payment method is required for export to proceed. Check the applicable property limits and costs before relying on this as your long-term record. Google Analytics 360 limits

- Confirm the intended GA4 property and streams are included in the export.
- Check exclusions against the event inventory so important events are not omitted.
- Retain the exported data and measurement definitions somewhere the people responsible for historical analysis can access.
- Set an archive-completeness checkpoint that accounts for late-arriving events and the daily-table replacement of intraday data.
Recreate priority tracking and reports in Umami
Use the inventory to rebuild the measures that answer real business questions instead of trying to reproduce every legacy report. Umami documents custom event tracking and features including goals, funnels, retention, UTM insights, and dashboards. Its tracker documentation describes default pageview tracking, click tracking, and path-change detection, along with domain restrictions and controls for automatic tracking. Review the implementation against your actual site and requirements using Umami’s feature overview and tracker configuration documentation.
Test how your site’s navigation and event triggers behave before treating a measurement as equivalent. In particular, verify single-page application route changes, staging-domain handling, and whether custom event parameters needed for a report are actually collected. Check consent and privacy requirements for your implementation as well; feature overlap alone does not establish that the setup meets your organization’s policies.

Umami’s UTM insight reports views by the standard utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content parameters. Agree on naming conventions and test representative tagged links before comparing campaign results. Otherwise, a change in labels can look like a change in performance. Umami says its UTM insight does not require additional parameters; see the UTM documentation.
Run GA4 and Umami together, then validate matched measures
Keep both systems collecting during a defined validation window. Compare equivalent measures over the same dates, domain scope, and event definitions. Start with pageviews, then check a small set of priority events, conversions, and campaign dimensions. Investigate differences in trigger logic, exclusions, time zones, filters, duplicate tagging, or product-specific definitions rather than assuming the shared event name means the totals should match.
Google’s published 2–5% expected difference applies specifically when comparing GA4 reports with GA4’s BigQuery export after relevant settings are aligned. Google advises checking that the correct property and BigQuery project are in use, that reporting identity and time zones match, and that streams or events have not been excluded. That range is not a tolerance or promise for comparing GA4 with Umami. Google’s comparison guidance
Use a practical cutover gate
- Priority events appear in Umami when their real triggers fire.
- Campaign traffic is classified sensibly under the agreed UTM conventions.
- Stakeholders can answer the named decision questions using Umami reports, the archive, or both.
- The GA4 export is accessible to the people who need historical analysis.
Once these checks pass, disable or remove the old collection only in line with your organization’s retention and privacy policy. The validation window is for finding measurement gaps, not for proving that every number from two differently configured products must be identical.
Know what an Umami history import does—and does not—establish
Umami’s platform page advertises importing data from Google Analytics, but the reviewed documentation does not specify the exact GA4 input formats, accepted fields, time-range limits, or how reports behave after import. Verify those details in the current import workflow or vendor documentation before relying on an import to preserve a particular report. Umami platform information
Import availability is not proof of one-to-one report preservation. Keep the independent GA4 export until you have checked whether the historical details your team needs are present and usable in Umami. Google’s own Data Import feature is a separate product capability: Google describes imports as joins with GA4 data, with some joins occurring during collection or processing and others at report or query time. Its behavior does not establish what Umami accepts. Google’s Data Import documentation
Choose a deployment model without confusing it with data continuity
Umami presents both managed cloud and self-hosted deployments. The deployment choice affects how the service is operated, but neither option by itself confirms that GA4 history has been imported or that a particular historical report can be reproduced. Assess the operational fit separately from the measurement and archive checks above, and verify current product details directly with Umami.
