To set up Home Assistant’s Map dashboard, edit the dashboard or add a Map card to another dashboard, then choose which coordinate-bearing entities or geolocation sources to show. Use the visual editor for basic changes or YAML for finer control over labels, history, clustering and map framing.

Set up the Map dashboard or add a Map card

  1. Open the dashboard you want to change and select Edit. If Home Assistant opens a takeover dialog, open its three-dot menu and select Take control. Taking control means the dashboard will no longer update automatically when new dashboard elements become available; Home Assistant says you cannot switch that dashboard back to automatic updating.

  2. Add a Map card. The built-in Map dashboard is populated by this card and can be edited like other dashboards. You can also add a Map card to another dashboard.

  3. Choose what the card displays. Configure it in the visual editor or use YAML. The same documented options are available in both.

Choose which markers appear

A Map card needs at least one of entities, geo_location_sources or show_all: true. An entity appears only if it has latitude and longitude attributes. Home Assistant’s Map card documentation states: “Only entities that have latitude and longitude attributes will be displayed on the map.”

  • entities: List specific entities when you want control over what appears. The entity picker includes available device trackers, such as a phone using the Home Assistant Companion App.
  • show_all: true: Include all entities with coordinates. This is convenient, but can make the map cluttered.
  • geo_location_sources: Choose individual geolocation sources or use all to include them all.

The home marker uses the home location configured in Home information. You can also include the home zone and other predefined zones.

Enjoy millisecond response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notifications, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)

Configure the map in YAML

This minimal example follows Home Assistant’s documented pattern. Replace the sample tracker with an entity in your installation that has latitude and longitude attributes.

type: map
aspect_ratio: 16:9
default_zoom: 8
auto_fit: true
entities:
  - device_tracker.demo_paulus
  - zone.home

For more control, an entity entry can set its label and whether it affects the map’s framing. This example uses a placeholder sensor from Home Assistant’s documentation; replace it with an existing coordinate-bearing entity.

Past-location paths

Set hours_to_show to a nonzero time range to draw past-location paths. The setting is labeled Hours to show in the UI. A person’s presence on the map depends on a connected presence-capable device or integration supplying the relevant data; Home Assistant gives a phone running the Companion App with location tracking enabled as an example.

Zoom and automatic fitting

  • auto_fit: true adjusts the viewport when a listed entity updates, which can keep the map following movement.
  • fit_zones controls whether listed zones count when the viewport is fitted.
  • Set focus: false on an entity or source to keep it from affecting the default zoom or fitting.
  • default_zoom uses lower numbers to zoom out and higher numbers to zoom in. Its documented default is 14 or the zoom needed to fit visible markers; it cannot force a closer zoom than the current fit requires.

If the framing looks wrong, use the map’s Reset focus control to fit displayed entities, then check focus, auto_fit and fit_zones.

Marker grouping

Clustering is enabled by default. Set cluster: false to show markers individually; Home Assistant warns that disabling clustering may cause performance issues when there are many markers. The on-map grouping control lets you toggle grouping at runtime.

Size, theme and scale

aspect_ratio accepts a percentage or a ratio such as 16:9. Set theme_mode to auto, light or dark. Set scale_ruler to enable a map scale indicator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Show entities conditionally

Use conditions to show an entity only when it passes every specified condition. Home Assistant’s documented example displays locatable entities except those whose state is home.

Troubleshoot missing markers and unexpected map behavior

  • No marker appears: Check that the entity has numeric latitude and longitude attributes and is included through entities, an active geolocation source or show_all.
  • A person is missing: Check that a presence-detection integration or location-capable device is providing person or device-tracker data. For a phone, verify that the Companion App is installed and location tracking is enabled.
  • No history trace appears: Set hours_to_show to a nonzero period.
  • The map is cluttered or slow: Select specific entities instead of using show_all, and leave clustering enabled when displaying many markers.
  • The dashboard no longer gets new elements automatically: This is a consequence of taking control. Home Assistant says a taken-over dashboard cannot return to automatic updating, though you can create a new default dashboard.
