Give an AI agent only the access and actions its specific job requires. Keep reading separate from sending or changing content, restrict it to the necessary conversations and history, and require your approval before consequential actions. Permission names and controls differ by app, so check the actual settings rather than relying on a generic “safe” preset.
Decide what the agent must do before granting access
Describe the task narrowly. For example: “Answer support questions in this channel using the current thread.” That is different from searching an entire workspace, starting conversations, or managing membership. A precise task helps you judge whether each requested permission is necessary. OpenAI likewise recommends explicit, specific instructions and warns that broad instructions give an agent wider latitude: ChatGPT agent guidance.
Use these permission dimensions to evaluate an app’s consent screen or admin settings. Not every service offers every control.
- Data scope: current message or thread, selected conversation, channel history, workspace search, or files.
- Identity: the agent’s own bot identity or actions on behalf of a user.
- Actions: read, draft, send, edit, delete, invite, or administer.
- Audience: a direct message, approved channel, private channel, group, or external recipient.
- Approval: ask before every action, allow reads but ask before changes, or automatically allow specified actions.
- External requests: no outbound requests, requests limited to approved domains, or unrestricted URLs and link unfurling.
Start with the smallest data boundary
Prefer access to the smallest conversation, channel, and span of message history that supports the task. Do not enable workspace-wide search, private-channel history, or file access just because the app requests it; require a clear need. In its Marketplace guidance, Slack says broad access to workspace message or file data is unlikely to be approved without a clear use case. Slack also says an app should not expose private information or capabilities to people who could not access them in Slack: Slack Marketplace guidelines.

Consider who can see the destination as well as what the agent can read. A response that carries information from a private conversation into a public channel or to an outside recipient can create an exposure even if the agent’s initial access was legitimate.
Keep read access separate from write access
Reading a thread does not inherently require permission to send, edit, or delete messages. Grant read access for the task first; add a write action only if the agent genuinely needs to perform it. Where available, begin with write actions disabled or approval-gated.

ChatGPT workspace controls distinguish supported read actions from write actions. Its “Allow read actions” setting permits reads without a prompt while asking before changes, but available settings depend on the workspace and connected app. Provider OAuth scopes and the app’s enabled actions are separate checks, so changing one does not necessarily change the other: ChatGPT connected-app controls.
Slack permissions are also specific to data or actions. Slack distinguishes bot scopes, which act as the app’s bot user, from user scopes, which act on behalf of the authorizing user. The identity matters: a permission to act as a user is not interchangeable with one that lets a bot act as itself. Slack’s chat:write and im:history examples for an App Home Messages tab are implementation details for that feature, not a universal permission list: Slack App Home documentation.

Require approval for consequential actions
Set a human confirmation step before the agent sends information to a new audience, shares private material, changes or deletes content, changes membership or access, or makes a consequential decision. If the app supports drafting, use a draft-and-review workflow when automatic sending is not essential. OpenAI recommends reviewing important actions before confirming them; its examples include sending email and completing a purchase. Slack Marketplace guidance says AI should not make consequential decisions without human review.
Approval is a control on actions, not a substitute for limiting data access. An agent that can read far more than its job requires still has unnecessary exposure, even if it usually asks before sending.

Account for hostile or misleading messages
Messages should be treated as untrusted input. A malicious or misleading message may try to manipulate an AI-connected app into disclosing information the app can access. Slack describes prompt injection as a data-exfiltration risk for AI features. Its documented scenario involves an attacker inducing an app to put sensitive channel history in a generated URL; link unfurling can then trigger an outbound request that exposes it.
Slack recommends validating message sources, not responding to messages from the LLM itself, disabling link unfurling by default for generated URLs, and allow-listing external domains: Slack security best practices. These controls address the path from untrusted message to external request; a system prompt alone should not be treated as a security boundary.

Check data handling and platform-specific settings
Slack
Review the specific scopes requested and whether they apply to the bot or to the user authorizing the app. Slack states that apps have no access by default and can do only what their scopes allow. The App Home Messages example requires chat:write to use the tab and identifies im:history as needed to respond there, while describing the latter as optional in that setup. Do not copy those scope names to another feature or service.
ChatGPT connected apps and workspace agents
Administrators can control who may use a connected app, which supported read and write actions are enabled, and when approval is required. Workspace agents have per-agent controls set by their builder. Check both the provider’s OAuth scopes and the app’s enabled actions; the controls are distinct, and available options vary by workspace and app.
WhatsApp AI experiences
WhatsApp’s Help Center search excerpt says a third-party agent can access what a user shares with it and that a message is delivered to the destination chosen by the agent: WhatsApp Help Center. That limited description does not establish how every WhatsApp agent works or what each one retains. Review the individual experience’s permission and data-handling terms.
For Slack Marketplace AI apps, developer guidance calls for disclosure of model use, data retention and use, LLM data tenancy, and data residency in the relevant Security & Compliance fields. It also says Slack data must not be used to train LLMs. For any connected app, check its own handling and retention terms: a permission grant does not answer those questions.

If the task expands, identify the new requirement and add only the specific access needed for it. Then review the conversation boundary, permitted actions, approval behavior, and external-request controls again. Slack states that new scopes require reauthorization for an existing token. In ChatGPT workspace controls, changing provider OAuth scopes does not necessarily change the app’s enabled actions, or vice versa.
