There is no universal home schedule: devices and modes differ, and eye protection, skin preparation, fit, cleaning, and care instructions can differ too.
Before your first session
- Identify the exact model and intended concern. Check the device label and manual to confirm which skin concern and light mode the mask is intended for. FDA device summaries illustrate that indications vary: one mask lists red and infrared light for full-face wrinkles and blue light for mild-to-moderate facial acne, while another record describes different configurations and intended uses. Those details apply to the named devices, not to LED masks generally. FDA 510(k) summary for LED MASK EXCLUSIVE MD; FDA 510(k) submission for an LED light therapy mask.
- Read the instructions for the mode you plan to use. Follow the manual for preparation, fit, selected mode, treatment duration, frequency, cleaning, and storage or charging. Do not borrow a schedule from another mask or mode. The FDA summary for one mask, for example, documents distinct schedules for different modes. FDA 510(k) summary.
- Check whether the device is appropriate for you. Ask a board-certified dermatologist before starting if you have a condition that makes you sensitive to light, such as lupus; take medication that increases light sensitivity; have darker skin and are concerned about hyperpigmentation; or are unsure whether the device is suitable for your concern. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) notes that red light can worsen photosensitivity-related concerns and visible light may cause more pronounced pigmentation in darker skin tones. AAD guidance on red light therapy.
Use the mask as its manual directs
Set the session length and frequency from the manual
Use the specified session duration and repeat schedule for your exact mask and mode. AAD says treatment needs vary and recommends following the device directions; researchers have used different devices and treatment durations, and the best schedule is not settled. Do not assume that a schedule described for one model applies to another. AAD guidance.
Use the required eye protection
If the directions call for eye protection, use the recommended protection every session. AAD advises: “Wear eye protection if the directions tell you to, using the eye protection that’s recommended.” Sunglasses are not a substitute for protective goggles. Some devices include a shield—the FDA summary for LED MASK EXCLUSIVE MD, for example, lists an eye shield—but products differ, so check your own manual. AAD guidance; FDA 510(k) summary.
Follow the model’s preparation, fit, and care directions
Use the manufacturer’s directions for preparing your skin, positioning or fitting the mask, cleaning it, and storing or charging it. The sources do not establish one cleaning product or method for all masks; use the instructions for your device rather than improvising.

What to expect from treatment
Results can be subtle, noticeable, or absent. AAD says some studies suggest improvement for certain concerns, but device and study protocols differ, making results difficult to compare; it describes red light as often complementary to standard treatment, not a guaranteed replacement for established care. AAD guidance.
AAD summarizes one study in which more than 90% of 90 patients reported some improvement after eight LED red-light treatments over four weeks. The AAD page does not state the underlying study’s year. This result is from one study, not a pooled estimate or a promise that every mask—or every user—will see improvement. AAD guidance.

Recognize side effects and stop if needed
AAD describes temporary mild pain or skin irritation as common side effects. Stop using the mask and seek appropriate clinical advice if you experience persistent irritation, pain, or an unexpected skin reaction. Short-term use appears safe according to AAD, but long-term effects are not yet fully understood. AAD guidance; Cleveland Clinic overview of LED light therapy.

AAD explains that “FDA-cleared” means a device is considered to pose a low risk to the public; clearance does not establish how effective it will be for every use. AAD also says “FDA approved” and “FDA certified” are not meaningful descriptions for these medical devices. Check a device’s intended use and instructions rather than treating a clearance claim as proof that it will work for you. AAD guidance.
