For U.S. shoppers, start with FoodSafety.gov’s Recalls and Outbreaks page, then compare the notice with the exact package in your hands. A brand-name match alone is not enough: check the product name, size, codes, dates, and distribution details the notice lists.

Check the package against an official notice

  1. Find the current federal notice. Search FoodSafety.gov’s Recalls and Outbreaks first. It brings together notices from the FDA and USDA. You can also go directly to the agency responsible for the food category.
  2. Identify the exact product. Read the whole notice, including its product description, affected locations, and any linked notice from the recalling company. The company may provide label or package images and more precise distribution information.
  3. Compare every listed identifier. Check the brand and product name, package size and type, UPC if provided, lot or product code, use-by or sell-by date, and establishment number when relevant. Also check whether the notice covers your state, store, or distribution area. FoodSafety.gov advises that the listed product information must match; the brand or food category by itself does not establish that your package is included.

If the notice does not list a particular identifier, do not assume a value for it. Use the details that are listed and follow the notice’s directions; contact the company or the responsible agency if the package cannot be confidently matched.

Choose the right recall lookup

FDA oversees most foods; USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) handles meat, poultry, and processed egg products. These lookup tools complement one another rather than offering interchangeable records.

Lookup route Best use Important limit or detail
FoodSafety.gov: Recalls and Outbreaks Consumer starting point for current FDA and USDA notices. Also explains the difference between recalls and public health or safety alerts.
FDA: Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts Search FDA public notices, including date, brand, product description, reason, and recalling company. FDA says this page is not comprehensive. Entries remain there for three years; older notices move to an archive searchable by product or company name and year.
FDA Enforcement Report Look up classified FDA recall records; its advanced search includes fields such as firm, product, and classification. It is a separate record source from the public alert page. The firm identified as recalling firm may not be the actual manufacturer.
USDA FSIS: Recalls and Alerts Check notices for meat, poultry, and processed egg products. FoodSafety.gov also combines USDA and FDA consumer notices.
The recalling company’s notice Verify package images, UPC or lot/date codes, and distribution such as states or stores. Use it alongside the relevant federal notice to determine whether your particular item and location are included.

What a missing search result means

No result on one page does not prove that a food has not been recalled. FDA explicitly says its public recalls and alerts page is not comprehensive, and older entries are archived after three years. Check the archive for older FDA notices, search the relevant FSIS or FoodSafety.gov pages when appropriate, and look for a linked company notice. The official notice’s scope—not the absence of a search result—is what determines whether a package is covered.

Recall, alert, and product scope are different

A public health or safety alert warns about a potential risk. FoodSafety.gov notes that an alert may be issued when a recall cannot yet be recommended, such as when an outbreak’s source has not been identified, or when a handling issue calls for a public reminder. An alert does not automatically mean every package in a brand’s product line is recalled. Read the specific notice for the affected product, locations, and recommended action.

If your package matches the notice

  • Do not open, eat, or serve it. Follow the notice’s specific directions; the product may be eligible for a return and refund or may need to be discarded.
  • Check for food that may have been prepared or stored nearby. If potentially contaminated food was in your kitchen, FoodSafety.gov advises discarding it and cleaning affected surfaces and utensils. Follow any more specific cleanup or disposal instructions in the notice.
  • Use the notice’s remedy and contact information. Do not assume a return deadline, refund method, or disposal procedure that the notice does not state.
