It depends on what the game’s servers do. A shutdown might remove only multiplayer, events, or shared content while leaving an offline campaign playable—or it might make the entire game inaccessible if essential gameplay or authentication relies on the publisher’s servers. Check the game’s official end-of-service notice: a sales delisting, a server closure, and the loss of offline play are separate events.

Why one server shutdown can have different effects from another

A game may use publisher servers for some or all of its core gameplay. It may also contact them for authentication, matchmaking, anti-cheat, leaderboards, social features, events, cloud saves, telemetry, or updates. If a server supports an optional online feature, that feature may disappear while the locally installed game still runs. If the server is essential to launching or playing, an installed copy may not be enough.

That is why a general answer cannot establish whether a particular game will remain playable. Look for the publisher’s notice and check exactly which platforms, features, and dates it names.

Examples: what publishers have said about specific games

Game What the notice said What the example shows
The Crew Ubisoft said it would delist the game and virtual-currency packs, keep the game playable until March 31, 2024, and then shut down the servers. It said the game would not be accessible on any platform after that date, including the platforms named in its notice. Ubisoft cited server-infrastructure and licensing constraints. Delisting and server closure were separate steps, but the stated final outcome was loss of access to the game.
Gran Turismo Sport PlayStation’s maintained shutdown notice says online services ended on January 31, 2024, while offline portions, including purchased add-ons, could still be played. Online service can end without removing all offline play.
LittleBigPlanet 3 PlayStation’s notice says online services and shared creations became unavailable, while locally stored user-created content and offline campaign play remained. Online features, shared content, local content, and a campaign can have different outcomes within one game.
GUNS UP! PlayStation’s notice says the game would not be playable after online functions ended because it required an online connection. A game can become unplayable when online access is a core requirement.
XDefiant Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024 that registrations, downloads, and purchases would stop immediately, while servers would remain active until June 3, 2025. A sunset notice can set different dates for sales or downloads and for server service. The announcement alone does not establish whether offline play is available after shutdown.

These examples come from Ubisoft’s announcements and PlayStation’s maintained online-service notice. They illustrate why it is important to read the individual game’s notice rather than assume every shutdown has the same result.

Delisting, downloading, and playing are different questions

A delisted game is no longer offered for new purchases through a particular store. That does not, by itself, say whether existing owners can play it, download it again, or use online services. Conversely, a game can remain playable for a period after sales or downloads stop, as Ubisoft’s XDefiant notice illustrates.

Redownload access and the availability of purchased add-ons or saves depend on the platform and the publisher’s actions. Check the notice for separate information about sales, downloads, server closure, and any remaining offline features. Do not treat a purchase or a local copy as proof that a server-dependent game will keep working.

How to check what will happen to a specific game

  1. Find the official end-of-service notice. Check the publisher’s support or announcement pages and, where relevant, the platform’s service notices.
  2. Note the dates and platforms. Look for separate dates for delisting, the end of downloads or registrations, and server closure. Confirm that the notice covers your platform and edition.
  3. Check what remains playable. Look for explicit details on offline modes, campaign play, add-ons, local saves, cloud saves, and user-created content. A statement that online services are ending does not settle each of these questions.
  4. Check the seller’s refund policy promptly. If the game was recently purchased and the shutdown is announced or imminent, contact the store or platform. Refund eligibility depends on its policy and any consumer protections that apply where you live.

Backing up game files may preserve local data, but it cannot supply a missing hosted service or server-side authentication. A physical disc does not guarantee continued play if the installed game still requires the publisher’s servers.

Can a shutdown qualify you for a refund?

There is no universal refund rule for every game or country. In its June 16, 2026 communication responding to the Stop Destroying Videogames European Citizens’ Initiative, the European Commission described EU consumer-law protections as conditional and dependent on the circumstances. The Commission says a discontinuation may amount to non-conformity if supply ends sooner than a consumer could reasonably expect. That expectation is assessed individually, and a proportionate refund may be due in some circumstances.

The Commission also says EU law does not set a universal minimum period for supplying digital games or require a publisher to hand over content in working form after commercial supply ends. The relevant contract, information given before purchase, the game, and the circumstances matter; contract terms allowing termination may also face case-by-case scrutiny. These points describe the EU framework, not an automatic refund or a promise that a game will run indefinitely. Players elsewhere should check the rules in their own jurisdiction.

Can a game be preserved after its servers close?

Sometimes a game can be adapted to run offline, use a self-hosted server, or support peer-to-peer play. None of these is a universal fix: the technical work depends on the game’s design and on what server functions it needs. Authentication, anti-cheat, proprietary infrastructure, licensed assets, and trade secrets can all complicate an unofficial or publisher-supported conversion.

Nintendo Wii Console, White Premium Bundle (Renewed)
  • Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
  • Tested and works well. Nice condition

The European Commission’s June 2026 communication records competing stakeholder positions rather than resolving every preservation question. Industry groups raised concerns about cybersecurity, continued operation after support ends, extensive re-engineering, and intellectual-property limits. Consumer representatives emphasized continued access and the possibility of removing some authentication-only requirements from single-player games. Those are stakeholder arguments, not a general ruling that a particular preservation method is lawful or workable.

Fan-run servers and emulators should be assessed game by game. Before relying on a project, check its actual functionality, safety, and legal status where you live. The Stop Killing Games campaign advocates against games being remotely disabled without reasonable means to keep them functional; that is the campaign’s position, not an independent legal finding.
