For most clean, intact printed QR codes, Level M is a sensible starting point. Consider Q or H when the code is likely to face dirt, abrasion, frequent handling, or a design overlay. Higher correction can help recover damaged data, but it may also increase the symbol’s module count for the same content, making each module smaller if the print area stays fixed. Choose for the actual conditions, then test the final-size print with the scanners people will use.

What QR code error-correction levels mean

DENSO WAVE describes four levels of approximate codeword recovery capacity. These percentages refer to codewords, not to a guaranteed share of the printed image that can be covered or damaged. Whether a code remains readable depends on how damage affects the encoded symbol.

Level Approximate codeword recovery capacity When it may fit
L About 7% (DENSO WAVE, accessed 2026) A clean, protected print where compactness or payload capacity is important.
M About 15% (DENSO WAVE, accessed 2026) A practical starting point for ordinary print expected to remain intact.
Q About 25% (DENSO WAVE, accessed 2026) A print with a plausible risk of wear or contamination.
H About 30% (DENSO WAVE, accessed 2026) A print with greater expected exposure to damage, provided the resulting symbol remains large and clear enough.

The figures are approximate manufacturer figures, not guarantees against arbitrary damage or poor printing. DENSO WAVE explains the error-correction levels.

How to choose a level for your print

Use M as a starting point for ordinary print

For an indoor sign, handout, or other print expected to stay clean and intact, M is a reasonable balance: it offers more recovery capacity than L without automatically choosing the highest level. This is practical guidance based on the published level trade-offs, not a universal manufacturer rule.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Consider Q or H when wear is credible

A frequently handled label or a code exposed to dirt may justify Q or H. Higher levels offer more stated recovery capacity, but they do not ensure that the code will survive every kind of damage. Make sure the selected level still produces a symbol with modules large enough for the printer and intended scanner.

Keep L in consideration when size or capacity is tight

If the code is expected to remain clean and the print area is limited, L may be worth considering because it has the lowest stated recovery capacity. Weigh that trade-off against the conditions the print will face rather than selecting a level by its letter alone.

Do not choose H automatically

Error-correction level is only one factor in the final symbol. The amount and character set of the data, correction level, and QR Code version all affect the module count. A denser code placed in a fixed area can leave less physical space for each module. Generate the actual content at the intended level and inspect its size before committing to a layout. DENSO WAVE describes the relationship between data, version, and symbol size.

Print size and quality matter alongside correction level

A QR Code is built from modules, and its physical size depends on both module size and symbol version. DENSO WAVE lists versions from 21 × 21 modules for Version 1 to 177 × 177 modules for Version 40, increasing by four modules per side at each version. More data can require more modules. In a fixed print area, that can make the individual modules smaller.

  • Use the available area: DENSO WAVE recommends making the symbol as large as the printing area allows.
  • Account for printer resolution: DENSO WAVE recommends at least four printer dots per module for stable operation. This is manufacturer guidance, not a universal guarantee for every printer, material, or output setting.
  • Check scanner limits: The intended scanner’s module-size capability should inform the print size. A module that is too small for the scanner can undermine readability regardless of the correction level.

Printer head density affects the achievable module size; DENSO WAVE’s print guidance discusses this relationship and should be treated as guidance rather than a guarantee for every production setup. See its QR Code printing recommendations.

Protect the quiet zone and avoid risky styling

Keep clear space around the symbol so nearby text or graphics do not interfere with detection. DENSO WAVE’s FAQ illustrates a four-module white margin around a Version 2 code printed with 0.5 mm modules; that is an example, not a substitute for applicable production specifications. The FAQ warns that illustrations or other designs can make a code slow or impossible to read. It recommends black on white as the basic treatment, and unusual colors should be tested on the final print. Read the DENSO WAVE QR Code FAQ.

Proof the code before printing at scale

  1. Generate the final payload. Use the content that will actually appear in the code and avoid unnecessary encoded data, since payload affects version and density.
  2. Set the correction level and layout. Place the generated symbol at its intended physical size and preserve clear space around it.
  3. Print a proof. Use the actual printer, stock, and output settings intended for production.
  4. Scan the proof under realistic conditions. Try the phones or scanners readers will use, at realistic distances and angles.
  5. Troubleshoot the physical result first. If scanning is unreliable, check size, contrast, quiet space, print sharpness, and scanner capability. Raising the correction level alone will not fix every printing or scanning problem.

DENSO WAVE’s official print guidance addresses module size and scanner capability; the proofing steps apply those considerations to the finished output. For standards context, ISO lists ISO/IEC 18004:2024, the fourth edition published in August 2024, which covers QR Code encoding, error correction, and production-quality requirements.
