To start ballooning as a passenger, choose a commercial operator, confirm its passenger and weather-cancellation policies before paying, dress for an outdoor outing, and follow the pilot’s briefing. You do not need pilot training or equipment for a ride. A hot-air balloon travels with the air currents, so the pilot cannot promise an exact route or a return to the launch field.
What happens on a hot-air balloon ride?
A balloon is an aircraft that stays aloft through buoyancy or heated air, rather than an engine. In a hot-air passenger balloon, the pilot heats the air inside the envelope to climb and lets it cool—or vents hot air—to descend. The balloon moves with the wind; the pilot can manage altitude but passengers do not steer, and the route depends on the currents and available safe landing areas. The FAA explains balloon operation in its Balloon Flying Handbook and its Piloted Balloons overview.
A passenger flight is distinct from learning to pilot. For a first ride, the practical work is choosing an operator, checking the booking terms and passenger requirements, preparing for the conditions, and following instructions on the day.
How do I choose and book an operator?
For commercial passenger flights in the United States, the FAA requires balloon pilots to hold a second-class medical certificate. The agency announced the requirement in 2022 and quoted Acting FAA Administrator Billy Nolen saying commercial balloon pilots must meet the same strict medical requirements as other commercial pilots. That statement concerns medical certification; it is not a guarantee that a flight is risk-free. The Balloon Federation of America also has a multi-tier safety accreditation program developed with FAA involvement, but its standards are voluntary—not a legal requirement for every operator. Ask what credentials and safety practices the operator can explain rather than assuming a particular accreditation is mandatory. See the FAA announcement.

Before booking, get clear answers to the questions that affect your flight and your plans:
- Who is operating the flight? Ask which pilot is expected to fly and what experience or safety credentials the operator can describe.
- Who will share the basket? Confirm whether the flight is shared or private and the expected passenger capacity.
- Can the route be specified? Usually not: wind determines where the balloon travels, subject to safe landing options.
- What is the full schedule? Ask for the meeting time and location, preparation, expected airborne portion, landing and pack-up, and return transport. The outing can take longer than the time in the air.
- What are the booking terms? Find out how the operator communicates a weather go/no-go decision, whether a weather cancellation leads to a refund or rescheduling, how long any voucher remains valid, whether you need a backup date, and what happens if you cancel.
Weather is central to balloon operations, and a pilot may decide conditions are unsuitable for launch. Refunds, rescheduling and passenger-cancellation terms vary by operator; read the terms for the specific booking. A local commercial operator’s FAQ describes that operator’s policies, not a universal industry rule. No standard flight duration or price is established here, so ask the operator for its current schedule and total cost.

What should I wear and bring?
Choose practical clothing for the weather and wear closed-toe shoes. You may be outdoors for several hours, and landing sites can be rough or wet. If you do not own suitable footwear, sturdy walking or hiking shoes are a reasonable option; specialized aviation shoes are not established as a requirement. Check your operator’s instructions. Passenger guidance from Sun Catchers and local operating guidance both emphasize practical preparation, but conditions and rules vary.
Ask before bringing a bag, camera or other personal item: operators differ on what is allowed and how it must be secured. Keep your hands free when climbing into the basket or following instructions, and stow loose items during launch or landing if the pilot asks.

What passenger requirements should I check?
There is no single passenger age, height or physical-readiness rule established for all operators. Before paying, ask the operator directly:
- What minimum age or height applies, and must a child be accompanied by an adult?
- Will I need to stand throughout the flight? How high are the basket sides, and what does getting in and out involve?
- Can the operator accommodate my mobility needs, and what assistance is available at the launch and landing sites?
- Could a recent injury, surgery, pregnancy or other health condition affect whether I should fly?
One passenger guide warns that a flight could aggravate a prior injury, but that is not an individual fitness assessment. Discuss personal medical questions with an appropriate clinician and tell the operator what accommodations or information you need. The operator’s requirements and ability to accommodate passengers are location- and flight-specific; one company’s rules do not establish a universal standard. See Sun Catchers’ passenger guide for an example of operator-level guidance.

What should I expect at takeoff and landing?
Listen closely to the pilot’s briefing and follow the instructions for your particular basket. FAA passenger landing guidance covers where to stand, which way to face, how to position your feet and knees, where to hold, and when to exit. For landing, the handbook directs passengers to face the direction of travel, bring feet and knees together with knees bent, hold firmly in two places, and stay in the basket after touchdown until the pilot says to get out. Its concise instruction is “Stay in the basket.” Read the FAA Balloon Flying Handbook; an NTSB-hosted flight-manual extract also stresses paying attention to the preflight briefing and practicing how to hold on.
Do not assume every landing will be gentle: the FAA handbook tells pilots to prepare passengers for a firm impact. Do not jump out at touchdown or replace the pilot’s balloon-specific instructions with generic airplane advice.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the hot-air balloon ride?
Ask the operator for both expected airborne time and the full outing schedule, including meeting, preparation, landing, pack-up and return transport. No standard duration is established across operators.
What if the weather is bad?
The pilot may cancel if conditions are unsuitable. Ask the operator how it makes and communicates the go/no-go decision and what refund or rescheduling terms apply to your booking.
Are there age requirements?
They vary by operator and location. Confirm the minimum age or height and any supervision rules before paying.
Is it safe for a pregnant woman to take a hot-air balloon ride?
There is no universal eligibility rule established here. Ask the operator about its policy and discuss your individual circumstances with an appropriate clinician.
