Max (now branded HBO Max on its current help pages) allows account use by the owner and people who live with them. For someone outside that household, the U.S. option is an Extra Member Add-On for $7.99 per month plus applicable taxes, if the account meets the billing and other eligibility rules. If you are traveling or use more than one home, the service has separate verification guidance; that does not make another household member eligible automatically.
Can you share a Max account with family?
HBO Max says an account is intended for its owner and people who live with the owner. A relative does not count as part of the household just because they are family: someone living at another address generally needs their own account or an eligible Extra Member Add-On. The help center says it assesses household use through account details, profile settings, network data, device information such as IP addresses and device IDs, and user activity. For a college student, the practical question is whether the student still lives with the account owner under the service’s household rules. The available guidance does not set out a special college-student exemption. A student living elsewhere should not assume that being a dependent or family member makes the account eligible for routine use at a second address.
What does the Extra Member Add-On cost, and who can buy it?
Warner Bros. Discovery launched the Extra Member Add-On in the U.S. on April 22, 2025, at $7.99 per month across subscription tiers. The current help page lists the price as $7.99 per month plus applicable taxes. The add-on is not available to every subscriber. HBO Max’s current terms specify these conditions:
- You need an active base subscription.
- Your subscription must be billed directly through WarnerMedia. Billing through an app store, internet provider, mobile provider, or TV provider is excluded.
- Subscribers to the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle are excluded.
- The extra member must be at least 18 and live in the same country as the account owner.
- One add-on can be purchased for one person outside the household.
What does an extra member receive?
The extra member creates a separate account with their own password and one profile. They can stream on one device at a time and receive features that correspond to the account owner’s plan. The account owner may transfer an eligible adult profile, which can preserve that person’s profile information and viewing history when they move to the separate account. The extra member uses their own login; the primary account owner remains responsible for the base subscription and add-on.

Extra Member Add-On or a separate account?
For an out-of-household relative or friend, the main practical difference is whether the primary subscriber can use the eligible add-on and whether the other person needs more than its one-profile, one-device allowance.

Why is Max asking if you are traveling?
Travel can make normal account use look different from viewing at the household’s usual location. HBO Max’s account-sharing guidance describes a limited number of Home or Traveling selections and email verification. For frequent travel within the U.S., it advises streaming briefly at home at least once a month on a phone, tablet, or computer connected to home Wi-Fi. If you regularly use two residences
For multiple residences, the help page recommends streaming at each residence and repeating the process every 90 days. It does not promise uninterrupted access for every combination of homes, devices, or travel frequency. A person who lives at a second address should distinguish this travel or residence guidance from permission to share an account with someone outside the household.
How did Max’s crackdown develop?
The current paid option followed earlier announcements about gradually detecting and restricting use outside households. In March 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery streaming chief JB Perrette said Max would begin addressing password sharing outside households later that year and continue into the following year. In December 2024, he described a gradual process using explicit and implicit signals, with filters tightening as the company learned to detect sharing. In April 2025, WBD announced the U.S. Extra Member Add-On and profile transfer as options for subscribers. A May 2025 report said WBD expected the effort to reach “full steam” in 12–18 months and expand to more territories. That was a forecast at the time, not confirmation of a current global rollout schedule. The current help-center terms cited here are U.S.-oriented, so subscribers elsewhere should check their local service terms rather than assume the U.S. price, eligibility, or enforcement applies. There is no Max-specific revenue or loss figure established in the cited coverage. The Associated Press reported in March 2024 that Perrette declined to estimate expected revenue from the planned crackdown. A separate $12.5 billion figure reported by the Los Angeles Times was a Parks Associates estimate of the expected 2024 cost of password piracy and account sharing to streaming services and pay-TV providers collectively—not a Max-specific loss.
