Start by checking the game’s latency and packet-loss indicators, then compare play over Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet connection. That comparison helps show whether the problem is wireless coverage or stability—or whether it persists beyond Wi-Fi. The steps below move from free, low-disruption checks to router and ISP troubleshooting.
First, identify what kind of lag you are experiencing
“Lag” can mean several different things. This guide addresses network problems: high latency (delay between your device and the game), packet loss (data that does not reach its destination), or unstable connectivity. Low frame rates and controller or display input lag are separate issues, and Wi-Fi changes will not fix them.
If your game displays ping, latency, or packet-loss information, note those indicators during a problem session. Record whether the issue is constant, appears at particular times, or starts when other people use the home network. An internet speed test’s download result is not a substitute for in-game latency: it measures a different aspect of the connection.
Reduce competing network traffic and compare
Large downloads and simultaneous streaming, calls, or other heavy use can add to congestion on a home network. Pause downloads and, if practical, try a session when fewer devices are actively using the connection. Compare the game’s indicators with a typical busy period. If the problem improves on a quieter network, congestion is a likely factor, though that alone does not identify whether the bottleneck is inside the home or farther along the connection.

Ofcom notes that delay or “lag” can affect online gaming as well as live services such as video calls (Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi guidance). Bungie also recommends checking for network congestion when troubleshooting latency and packet loss (Bungie Help).
Test Ethernet before changing Wi-Fi or buying equipment
If your stationary PC or console has an Ethernet port, connect it directly to the router and retest under conditions as similar as possible to your Wi-Fi test. A suitable Ethernet cable can be a temporary diagnostic tool as well as a permanent option for a device that stays near the router. Route it safely so it does not create a trip hazard.

- If play improves over Ethernet: Focus next on Wi-Fi signal strength, placement, obstacles, and interference.
- If the same problem remains over Ethernet: Do not keep changing wireless settings. Check whether other devices are affected and consider the router or modem, the ISP connection or routing, and the game service.
Bungie describes switching to a wired connection as an important first troubleshooting step for ruling out Wi-Fi strength or stability as a cause of latency. Ofcom likewise recommends Ethernet for stationary devices when a suitable port is available (Ofcom guidance).
Improve Wi-Fi where the wired comparison points to it
Move the router and reduce obstacles
Wi-Fi performance depends on the path between the router and the gaming device. Distance, walls, router placement, the device’s wireless capability, and interference can all matter. When practical, put the router in a more open, central location and reduce avoidable obstructions between it and the console or PC. Retest from the usual playing position rather than judging the change beside the router.

Choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz for the room, not by a universal rule
Microsoft’s guidance describes 5 GHz as generally offering higher throughput and more non-overlapping channel options than 2.4 GHz, but with shorter range and weaker performance through obstacles. A nearby gaming device may do better on 5 GHz; a device farther away or separated by walls may have a more stable connection on 2.4 GHz. Test the bands separately if your router allows it and compare in-game latency and packet loss from the actual playing location. The best choice depends on the layout and equipment.
Review the Wi-Fi channel
For 2.4 GHz, Microsoft recommends choosing among channels 1, 6, or 11 while considering nearby access points. For 5 GHz, its guidance is to choose a channel with fewer access points at the relevant signal strength. Router settings, automatic channel selection, and legally available channels vary by router and region. If automatic selection works well, there may be no reason to change it. Otherwise, change one setting at a time and retest before making another change.

Test QoS rather than assuming it will help
Some routers offer Quality of Service (QoS) settings that prioritize certain devices or traffic. Their behavior varies by router and workload, and prioritization cannot create additional capacity from your ISP. If household traffic is heavy, test QoS both on and off while watching the game’s network indicators; keep the setting that produces a better result in your conditions. Intel recommends using in-game network statistics when evaluating packet-loss troubleshooting, including QoS (Intel’s packet-loss guidance).

If Ethernet does not help, look beyond Wi-Fi
When the issue persists on a direct wired connection, check whether it affects more than one device or game. If several devices have trouble, the home router or modem, ISP service, or wider network path may be involved. If only one game is affected, the game service or route to its servers may be relevant. Intel’s gaming guidance includes selecting a nearer game server when that option is available (Intel: wired or wireless internet for gaming). Contact your ISP about a problem that appears to involve its service or wider infrastructure; contact the game service when evidence points specifically to that game.
A gaming-branded router is not a guaranteed way to lower ping. RTINGS’ router testing, updated June 5, 2025, found routers could help under particular network-saturation conditions, while also noting that a router cannot control every source of game latency (RTINGS’ discussion of gaming routers and ping). Consider a router or mesh system only after your tests point to a specific coverage or home-network congestion limitation; the results here do not establish a model recommendation.
Quick Recap
Use the result to choose the next step
| Connection or change | When it may help | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Ethernet | Testing whether Wi-Fi contributes to instability; a stationary device near the router may also use it long-term. | Requires a suitable port and cable, and limits mobility. It cannot by itself fix ISP routing or game-server congestion. |
| 5 GHz Wi-Fi | A device relatively close to the router may benefit from generally higher throughput and more channel options. | Shorter range and weaker performance through obstacles than 2.4 GHz can make it less suitable at a distance. |
| 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi | A device farther from the router or behind walls may get a more stable connection than on 5 GHz. | Shared use and local access-point conditions can affect performance; results depend on the environment. |
| Router placement or channel change | Tests whether obstacles, placement, or local channel conditions are affecting Wi-Fi. | Improvement depends on the home layout, router, client device, and nearby networks; change settings one at a time. |
| QoS | Worth testing when competing household traffic appears to affect play. | Router implementations differ, and prioritization cannot add ISP capacity. |
