Nobel laureates are chosen through a confidential, multi-stage process: qualified nominators submit candidates, prize committees assess and narrow the nominations with expert help, and the relevant prize-awarding body makes the final decision. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is the exception to the usual division of roles: it both evaluates candidates and selects the Peace Prize recipient.

How the Nobel selection process works

The process follows a yearly cycle, but nomination eligibility and the bodies responsible for each stage differ by prize. The general sequence is nomination, committee review, expert assessment, a final decision by the awarding body, and public announcement.

  1. Qualified nominators are invited or otherwise eligible. In September, committees invite people authorized under rules for the relevant prize. Eligible nominators include, depending on the category, academy members, university professors, researchers and previous laureates. The Peace Prize also has a broader group of people who may nominate without an invitation.
  2. Nominations are submitted for the coming award year. The 2025 Nobel Week media guide gives January 31 as the deadline for receipt. The Nobel Foundation statutes describe the annual adjudication period as covering nominations received during the preceding twelve months up to February 1. These are different formulations: the media guide states the operational deadline, while the statutes describe the annual period.
  3. The committee checks and narrows nominations. Committees verify that nominators were eligible and then reduce the pool through successive stages. A nomination applies to one year only; a candidate may be nominated by several people or nominated again in a later year.
  4. Experts assist with assessment. Shortlisted candidates are examined in depth, with help from domestic and foreign experts. The details vary by category, but committee assessment and recommendations are part of the broader process.
  5. The prize-awarding body makes the decision. For most prizes, the committee recommends candidates and a separate awarding institution chooses the laureate. The Norwegian Nobel Committee both assesses and selects the Peace Prize recipient.
  6. The laureates are announced. For the 2025 schedule, evaluation ran from February to early October, with laureates notified before press conferences in early October.

Who decides each Nobel Prize?

The committee reviewing candidates and the body making the final selection are not always the same. The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences is awarded alongside the other Nobel Prizes, but it was established by Sveriges Riksbank in 1968; it is not one of the five prizes specified in Alfred Nobel’s will.

Prize Body that selects laureates Funding or role distinction
Physics Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences The Academy’s statutes describe committee proposals, class comments and an Academy decision.
Chemistry Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences The Academy’s statutes describe committee proposals, class comments and an Academy decision.
Physiology or Medicine Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet The Assembly selects the laureates.
Literature Swedish Academy The Academy selects the laureates.
Peace Norwegian Nobel Committee The committee assesses candidates and makes the final selection.
Economic Sciences Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Established by Sveriges Riksbank in 1968; Sveriges Riksbank funds the prize.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences appoints committees of three to five members for the prizes it awards, as prescribed by the Nobel Foundation statutes. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has five members. These are institutional arrangements, not indicators of a candidate’s likelihood of winning.

Who can nominate a candidate?

Only people authorized under the rules for a particular prize may submit nominations. Committees invite eligible nominators each September; the authorized groups vary by category and include such people as academy members, university professors, researchers and previous laureates. For the Peace Prize, certain eligible nominators may submit nominations without first receiving an invitation. Being eligible to nominate does not mean a person can nominate themselves.

The Nobel Foundation statutes state: “A personal application for an award shall not be considered.” In other words, self-nominations are not accepted.

Are Nobel nominees’ names public?

No. Nominee identities and nominations are confidential for 50 years, according to Nobel Prize Outreach’s overview. A list claiming to identify current nominees is therefore not an official public record. A nomination is also not a public vote or a published score: committees assess candidates through a review process that includes expert input.

How the process varies by prize

The broad sequence is shared, but nomination rules, committee arrangements and final authority depend on the award. The Peace Prize stands out because the Norwegian Nobel Committee both assesses candidates and chooses the recipient. For Physics, Chemistry and Economic Sciences, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences makes the final selection; its statutes describe committee proposals, comments from the relevant Academy class and an Academy decision. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Physiology or Medicine laureates, while the Swedish Academy selects the Literature laureates.

Institutional membership figures help explain the different bodies involved, but they should not be mistaken for selection odds: the 2024 annual review reports about 450 Swedish and about 175 foreign members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 50 members of the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet, and 18 members of the Swedish Academy.

What the annual dates mean

The 2025 Nobel Week media guide describes a typical calendar: invitations in September, a January 31 nomination deadline, evaluation from February to early October, and announcements in early October. The Nobel Foundation statutes use a different wording for the annual nomination period, describing submissions during the preceding twelve months up to February 1. For a specific prize year, the applicable official schedule is the best guide to operational dates; timing and details can vary.
