There is no reliable evidence here to crown Claude or ChatGPT the more empathetic or safer choice. Both companies describe safeguards for distress and routes to human support, but their statements and self-reported evaluations are not an independent, like-for-like test. The practical differences readers can check are what each service says it does, how its privacy controls work, and how long chats may be retained.

Neither service is a therapist or a confidential substitute for professional care. Before sharing sensitive details, review the service’s current privacy settings and policy; a training opt-out is not the same as deleting a conversation.

What does “empathetic” mean in this comparison?

Here, empathy means the assistant’s apparent tone and response to someone who is distressed—not a clinical measure of empathy, mental-health competence, or safety. A warm-sounding answer does not establish that a system understands a person’s situation or can provide appropriate care.

The available material does not establish a direct, independent Claude-versus-ChatGPT test of empathy or crisis handling. Company descriptions can tell you what each provider says it intends its service to do; they do not show which assistant performs better in comparable real-world conversations.

What do Claude and ChatGPT say they do when someone is distressed?

Claude

Anthropic says it trains Claude to respond to signs of distress with care, acknowledge its limitations as an AI, and direct people toward human support such as helplines, mental-health professionals, or trusted friends and family. The company also says classifiers may detect distress, including suicidal and self-harm thoughts, and surface support resources in real time. It identifies ThroughLine as a partner connecting users to trained support in more than 170 countries, according to Anthropic’s policy page accessed October 4, 2026. These are descriptions of Anthropic’s design and safeguards, not independent findings about effectiveness. Anthropic AI policy

ChatGPT

OpenAI says ChatGPT is trained to avoid self-harm instructions, respond supportively, and guide people expressing suicidal intent toward professional resources. Its 2025 description names 988 in the United States, Samaritans in the United Kingdom, and findahelpline.com elsewhere. OpenAI also acknowledges that safeguards can be less reliable in long exchanges and describes ongoing work to improve them. These are dated statements by the provider; resources and behavior may change. OpenAI’s 2025 description of support in crisis conversations

OpenAI’s October 27, 2025 post says the company worked with more than 170 mental-health experts on recognizing distress, responding with care, and guiding users toward real-world support. It describes principles including respect for users’ real-world relationships, avoiding affirmation of ungrounded beliefs tied to distress, and recommending professional care when appropriate. The post documents OpenAI’s approach, not an independent assessment of ChatGPT or comparison with Claude. OpenAI’s post on responses in sensitive conversations

Published evaluation figures No directly comparable figure is established in the cited material. OpenAI reports 92% compliance on its evaluation of more than 1,000 challenging mental-health-related conversations and 91% on a separate evaluation of more than 1,000 challenging self-harm and suicide conversations. Both figures concern the newer GPT-5 compared with an earlier GPT-5 version under OpenAI’s own taxonomy; neither is a real-world success rate or a Claude comparison. Source

Those OpenAI percentages describe selected, challenging test conversations, not the share of people who will receive a safe or helpful answer. They do not measure clinical outcomes and cannot establish that ChatGPT is safer or more empathetic than Claude.

A separate OpenAI and MIT Media Lab paper reports analysis of more than 4 million conversations, surveys of more than 4,000 users, and a randomized trial with close to 1,000 participants over 28 days. It describes nuanced effects in voice interactions and an association between very high usage and self-reported dependence indicators. These findings are not a Claude comparison, and the excerpt available for the paper does not establish its publication year. Study paper

For urgent or serious distress, do not rely on an AI assistant to assess risk or provide crisis care. Use a current local crisis service, contact a trusted person, or seek professional help; availability and appropriate services depend on where you are.

What happens to sensitive conversations and account data?

Policies describe different actions that are easy to confuse: preventing new chats from being used to improve models, keeping a chat out of history, and deleting a chat are not interchangeable. The details below concern consumer services and the cited policies; check the current policy and regional terms before relying on them.

Privacy question Claude consumer service ChatGPT consumer service
Can conversations be used to improve models? Anthropic’s consumer Privacy Policy, effective September 10, 2026, says inputs and outputs may be used to train and improve models unless the user opts out in account settings. It lists exceptions: content flagged for safety review and material explicitly reported to Anthropic may still be used for model improvement. Anthropic Privacy Policy Turning off “Improve the model for everyone” prevents new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, according to OpenAI’s Data Controls help page. The chats remain in history. OpenAI Data Controls
What about temporary or deleted chats? Anthropic says an individually deleted conversation is removed from conversation history immediately and automatically deleted from the backend within 30 days. Anthropic Privacy Policy Temporary chats do not appear in history, create or update memories, or get used to improve models, but may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Turning off model improvement does not delete chats. OpenAI Data Controls
Can anyone other than the account holder access content? The cited policy describes personal data, third-party services, and international transfers; specific comparable access details are not stated in the cited material. Anthropic Privacy Policy OpenAI says selected service providers may process the minimum content needed to provide services, and that a limited number of authorized personnel or providers may access content for specified needs, including safety, subject to access restrictions. OpenAI also says it does not sell user data or share ChatGPT conversations with advertisers. These are the provider’s stated practices, not a guarantee of absolute secrecy. OpenAI consumer data handling

OpenAI’s Data Controls page also says limited safety-relevant context may still be used in rare, high-risk situations even when memory or personalization is off. A personalization control should not be treated as a promise that no safety processing can occur. OpenAI Data Controls

How should you set privacy controls before sharing?

  1. For ChatGPT, review Data Controls. Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” if you do not want new conversations used to train OpenAI models. This leaves chats in history; choose Temporary Chat when you want a chat that does not appear in history or create or update memories, while accounting for its stated safety retention. OpenAI Data Controls
  2. For Claude, check account settings and the current consumer Privacy Policy. Anthropic says users can opt out of using inputs and outputs for model improvement through account settings. Read the listed safety-review and user-report exceptions before sharing sensitive material. Anthropic Privacy Policy
  3. Keep identifying details out where possible. Describe the issue without names, contact details, workplace or school identifiers, or other details you would not want processed under the service’s policy.
  4. Use human support for consequential needs. For serious distress, contact a trusted person, local crisis service, or mental-health professional rather than treating an assistant’s answer as a risk assessment.

Anthropic states that Claude.ai is not offered to users under 18; this consumer-service statement should not be generalized to every API or third-party implementation of Claude. Anthropic AI policy
