On a MacBook Neo, open Apple menu > System Settings > Screen Time. To manage a child’s settings through Family Sharing, select the child in the Family Member menu, choose Set Up Screen Time For Your Child, and follow the prompts. You can also set up Screen Time locally from the child’s Mac account if your family does not use Family Sharing.

Before you start: give your child a separate account

If the MacBook Neo is shared, set up a separate macOS user account and Apple Account for the child. Apple recommends this so the child’s apps and information are kept separate from other family members’ data. See Apple’s guidance on setting up a Mac for a child.

Apple’s MacBook Neo announcement identifies macOS Tahoe as the operating system at launch. The Screen Time steps below use Apple’s general Mac instructions, so the precise labels and options may differ with the macOS version installed on your Neo. Apple’s MacBook Neo announcement.

Choose how you’ll manage Screen Time

Setup route Parent management What you need
Family Sharing A parent or guardian can manage the child’s Screen Time remotely from a device signed in to the family group. A Family Sharing group, with the child selected from the Family Member menu. The newest shared controls may also require every relevant family device to meet Apple’s OS-version requirement.
Local setup Configure Screen Time while logged in to the child’s account on the Mac; remote Family Sharing management is not part of this route. A separate child user account on the Mac. This option works if the family does not use Family Sharing.

Apple recommends Family Sharing when a parent or guardian wants to manage a child’s usage across devices. For setup details, see Apple’s Screen Time setup instructions and Mac setup guidance for a child.

Set up Screen Time through Family Sharing

  1. On the MacBook Neo, choose Apple menu > System Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Open the Family Member menu and select the child.
  3. Choose Set Up Screen Time For Your Child, then follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Review the offered controls, such as App & Website Activity, Downtime, content restrictions, Communication Safety, and a Screen Time passcode. Choose the settings that fit your family.

Apple’s Screen Time setup instructions explain the general Mac flow. The options displayed can depend on the account, family role, macOS version, and which Screen Time features are enabled.

Set up Screen Time locally on the child’s Mac account

  1. Log in to the child’s macOS user account on the MacBook Neo.
  2. Choose Apple menu > System Settings > Screen Time.
  3. Follow the available setup prompts and choose the time, content, and safety controls you want.
  4. Create a Screen Time passcode if prompted, and use the lock option to require it before settings can be changed or extra time granted.

The local route is useful when the family is not using Family Sharing. If the Family Member menu is absent, Apple advises checking that the Mac is signed in to an Apple Account and that Family Sharing is set up. See Apple’s Mac setup guidance and Apple’s overview of Screen Time settings.

Choose the controls your child needs

Set time limits and schedules

Use Downtime to schedule periods when access to apps is limited, and App Limits to set time limits for apps or categories. These address when and how long the child can use selected apps; they are separate from content restrictions.

Restrict content, websites, and changes

Under Content & Privacy, Apple provides controls for browsing and gaming, store and media content, apps and device features, privacy changes, and preferences. The available controls depend on the account and macOS configuration. Review the actual options on the child’s Mac rather than assuming every restriction is available in every setup. See Apple’s Screen Time settings overview.

Review communication and safety options

The child setup flow may include Communication Safety. Check the options Apple presents for your account and region, and decide whether they suit your family. Apple does not characterize these settings as a guarantee that all unsafe content or contact will be blocked.

Lock the settings with a passcode

Use Manage Screen Time or Lock Screen Time Settings, where available, to require a Screen Time passcode before someone can change settings or grant more time. This adds a barrier to casual changes; it should not be treated as making controls tamper-proof. See Apple’s Screen Time settings overview.

What to know about newer cross-device controls

Apple’s 2026 support material describes updated parental controls for macOS 27 and corresponding current family-device operating systems. Apple says the updated shared experience requires all devices in the Family Sharing group to use iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or visionOS 27, as applicable. This is a requirement for those newer shared features, not a claim that macOS 27 comes installed on every MacBook Neo. See Apple’s parental controls guidance.

If every family device cannot be updated to the required version, Apple says families can continue with the previous Screen Time and parental controls or adjust controls directly on the child’s device. Check the operating system on each device before relying on a newer shared feature.

Troubleshoot missing options

  • No Family Member menu: Confirm the Mac is signed in to an Apple Account and is part of a Family Sharing group. Also confirm you are signed in as a parent or guardian with permission to manage the child. Apple documents these dependencies in its Screen Time settings overview.
  • Controls or labels differ: macOS version, account type, family role, and enabled features affect what appears. Use the settings actually shown in System Settings > Screen Time, and check Apple’s setup instructions.
  • New shared controls are unavailable: Check whether all relevant devices meet Apple’s stated OS-version condition for the updated experience. If not, use the previous controls or configure settings on the child’s Mac. Apple’s parental controls guidance.
