Use the correct HDMI input, confirm that the TV, cable, console or PC, and game support your target resolution and refresh rate, then enable ALLM and VRR if the full setup supports them. Tune HDR and local dimming for your specific TV, room, and preferences.
Start with Game Mode, not a universal slider recipe
Select Game Mode, Game, or the manufacturer’s equivalent for the input used by your console or PC. This is the practical starting point for gaming because it is designed to reduce processing delay or expose gaming features. Menu labels and behavior vary by model, region, firmware, and connected device.
Game Mode can also change which picture controls are available. If a brightness, tone-mapping, or local-dimming option disappears, check the TV’s gaming menu and manual before assuming a setting is broken. The exact controls retained in Game Mode are model-specific.
Check the whole signal chain for your target resolution and refresh rate
A TV’s advertised refresh rate does not guarantee that every HDMI input, source, cable, or game can deliver that signal. Check the specifications for the particular TV port and the output settings on the console or PC. Connect to the port the manufacturer identifies for the resolution and refresh rate you want.

Samsung’s instructions for its 4K at 120 Hz setup specify using the designated HDMI port and recommend a 2.1 HDMI cable. That recommendation applies to that documented setup; a cable by itself cannot add support that the TV input or gaming device lacks. Check both ends of the connection before buying a replacement cable.
Enable ALLM and VRR when the TV and source support them
- ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) can switch a compatible TV into a low-latency mode automatically. Support and menu behavior depend on the TV and source.
- VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) can reduce screen tearing when supported by the TV and gaming device. The supported range varies by model.
Turn these features on in the TV and console or PC settings when both ends support them and you want to use them. Where the TV provides gaming or signal information, check that the feature is active; a label on a product page alone does not confirm that it is working in your setup.

Tune HDR and local dimming for your exact TV
Begin with the TV’s Game HDR option or manufacturer guidance for your model. Adjust HDR brightness and local dimming in small steps while viewing the game you actually play. A brighter, more dramatic image may suit a bright room or personal preference; a different tone-mapping choice may better suit someone who prioritizes the intended HDR presentation. Neither is a universal rule for Mini-LED TVs.
Do not copy brightness, contrast, color temperature, local-dimming, or tone-mapping values from another TV as if they were calibrated for yours. Mini-LED describes a backlight technology, not a shared picture-processing system. Panel behavior, HDR controls, local-dimming implementation, and available adjustments differ between models.

Why product specifications are not recommended settings
Manufacturer listings show how different Mini-LED TVs can be, but their feature and brightness figures describe particular products and markets—not picture-setting targets.

When comparing TVs for gaming, check the supported resolution and refresh rate for each HDMI input, VRR range and ALLM support, HDR formats supported by both TV and source, and which HDR and local-dimming controls remain available in Game Mode.

Use model-specific calibration guidance as a starting point
Even settings published for one TV should not be treated as a universal preset. Adam Babcock, author of RTINGS’ Samsung R85H calibration guide, says: “These settings are meant to provide a starting point; they’re not meant to be copied 1:1.” The guide’s settings were tested on a 65-inch Samsung R85H and are stated to apply to other listed sizes, with adjustments for viewing conditions and preference. Use them only as guidance for that model family, not as settings for Mini-LED TVs generally. Read the Samsung R85H settings guide.

- Verify the source output. Check the console or PC’s selected resolution, refresh rate, HDR output, and VRR settings.
- Verify the TV input and connection. Confirm the device is connected to the port specified for the intended signal and that the cable and both devices support it.
- Check the active picture mode. Confirm Game Mode is enabled on the correct input and look for any game or signal-information screen that reports active features.
- Review HDR and picture controls. Check whether the game is outputting HDR and whether Game Mode has changed which picture options are available. Revisit model-specific guidance rather than applying values from another TV.
Because menu behavior and available controls vary by model, there is no single fix that applies to every Mini-LED TV.
