First identify where the failure happens: while downloading or installing, or after the game is installed and you press Play. Restart Steam and your computer, then follow the matching steps below. Use the exact error message to jump to the relevant fix; download, library, file, compatibility, and security problems need different remedies.

If the game won’t download or install

  1. Restart Steam and your computer. Quit Steam completely, reopen it, and retry the download. If that fails, restart the computer before moving on.
  2. Clear Steam’s download cache. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. This does not remove installed games, but Steam will ask you to sign in again. See Steam’s download-cache instructions.
  3. Repair the library folder. Open Steam > Settings > Storage, select the library drive, and use its folder options to repair the library. Check that the drive is connected and that Steam can write to its library location. Steam’s installation and update troubleshooting also suggests trying another library drive as a diagnostic step.
  4. Switch download region. Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and choose a different, relatively nearby download region, then retry. A regional content server can be slow or overloaded; this is especially worth trying when Steam reports a server problem.

If Steam still cannot download, consider whether a router or modem issue, an operating-system or driver update, firewall or antivirus rules, or a program monitoring or modifying disk/network activity could be interfering. Steam lists these among possible causes, but they require different diagnoses. Avoid leaving security protection disabled; if you briefly test a firewall rule, turn the firewall back on and correct the rule.

If the game is installed but won’t launch

  1. Restart the computer to clear a hung process or temporary system issue.
  2. Verify the game’s files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification can take several minutes. Some files that fail verification may be local configuration files, which can be normal. Follow Steam’s file-verification guidance.
  3. Check compatibility and background software. Install available operating-system and hardware-driver updates, then temporarily close non-essential background applications to see whether one is interfering. Compare your computer with the system requirements listed for that specific game.

Steam’s general launch troubleshooting has platform-specific guidance for Windows, Linux, and macOS. On Linux, check that the game supports Linux; if you are using Steam Play/Proton, consult the game’s community guidance for Proton-specific issues. If the general checks do not help, contact the game’s developer for title-specific diagnosis.

Fix the specific Steam error

“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)”

Check your antivirus quarantine or history first: security software may have flagged and quarantined a game file. If it did, review the detection and restore or allow the file only if you trust it and have confirmed it belongs to the game. If no file was quarantined, the download may have failed or a game file may be corrupted; restart Steam and verify the game files using the steps above. If the error remains, submit a Steam Support request with an uncropped screenshot of the error and the system details Support asks for.

“This game is currently unavailable”

Verify the game files first. For a third-party title, Steam suggests trying the game executable—or another launcher executable—in the installation folder to reveal a more specific error. A secondary installer bundled with the game may also have been canceled or blocked, preventing the game from starting. See Steam’s guidance for this error.

“Failed to start game (app already running)”

The game may have hung or crashed without closing its process. On Windows, open Task Manager, find the game process, end it, and try again. If you cannot find or clear the stuck process, restart the computer. If you are enrolled in the Steam client beta, test outside the beta. Steam explains these steps in its app-already-running troubleshooting.

If Steam says its servers are unavailable or too busy

Try a different nearby download region in Steam > Settings > Downloads. If the problem continues, see whether Steam behaves differently on another network; that can help distinguish a local network issue from a problem with the current connection. Steam identifies router or internet trouble and firewall or antivirus configuration as possible causes.

For a firewall-related test, use Steam’s firewall instructions to refresh Steam’s executable permissions and test connectivity. If briefly disabling the firewall shows that a rule is blocking Steam, turn the firewall back on and fix the rule or allow-list permissions. Steam does not recommend leaving the firewall disabled. Its page for the exact servers unavailable or too busy message provides the related troubleshooting.

Check the library drive only when storage is implicated

If Steam cannot recognize a library or the drive disconnects during use, the library location may be part of the problem. Steam does not recommend external hard drives for game libraries because they can disconnect at an inopportune time. If an external drive is the cause, moving the library to an internal drive is a relevant option; it is not a general fix for unrelated download or launch errors. See Steam’s advice about installed games appearing as uninstalled.
