To stop Google Messages from sending read receipts or typing indicators, open your profile icon, tap Messages settings > RCS chats (or Chat features), then turn off Send read receipts and Show typing indicators. RCS can stay on. If you want to stop a sender or group, block that conversation instead; turn off RCS only if you want to disable the broader service.
Stop sending read receipts and typing indicators
-
Open Google Messages and tap your profile icon.
-
Tap Messages settings, then RCS chats. If your app shows the older label, tap Chat features.
-
Turn off Send read receipts and Show typing indicators.
These switches control what you share with other people: the read-receipt setting lets others know when you have read their messages, and the typing setting shows when you are typing. They do not turn off RCS. Google also notes that you can only see whether another person has read a message if that person has read receipts enabled. See Google Messages Help: How RCS chats keep your conversations secure and Turn on RCS chats in Google Messages.

Hide indicators from other people?
If you mean hiding other people’s typing indicators or read receipts on your screen, Google’s documented settings do not provide a control for that. The switches above govern the indicators you send, not those you receive. A response in the Google Messages Community says incoming typing indicators cannot be turned off, but that is community guidance rather than an official settings instruction.
Turn off RCS completely
In Google Messages, open your profile icon, then tap Messages settings > RCS chats (or Chat features) and switch RCS off. Google says turning off RCS also turns off read receipts and typing indicators. It is a broader change than disabling the two individual signals: RCS features depend on the app, device, carrier, region and other people in the conversation, and SMS/MMS may be used as a fallback in some circumstances. Google cautions against toggling RCS on and off because you may be removed from group chats. Read Google’s RCS security and settings guidance, its RCS setup instructions and the RCS FAQ before disabling it.

Block privately or report as spam
Blocking does not require a spam report. Reporting as spam also blocks the sender and moves the thread to Spam & blocked. A report may send the sender’s number and the last ten incoming messages to Google; a report about a group may also include information about other participants. Choose Block alone if you want to stop the conversation without submitting a report. Details are in Google’s spam-reporting instructions.
Unsubscribe from a business
For a business conversation, use More > Unsubscribe when that option is available. This is intended to stop non-essential messages; requested essential messages, such as one-time passwords or transactional updates, may still arrive. Unsubscribe is not the same as blocking. See Google’s guide to RCS chats with businesses.

What spam protection does
On supported devices, Google Messages offers a spam-protection setting at profile icon > Messages settings > Protection & Safety > Spam protection. Google says spam protection is on automatically and can be turned off where available. Its filtering may use on-device machine learning and check message URLs. The option and labels can vary, and spam protection helps identify suspected spam; it is not a replacement for blocking a known unwanted sender. See How Google protects your privacy with spam detection.
