Start by checking what is blocking your next Sanctuary upgrade; then spend resources on the system that clears that bottleneck or strengthens the squad you actually use. Exact priorities depend on your current account stage.
What to upgrade first
Use this order as a decision framework, not a fixed build. Community guides describe the Sanctuary as the main progression hub, but the best next upgrade depends on its current requirements and your resources.
- Check the next Sanctuary upgrade. Review its in-game prerequisites and costs before spending. Sanctuary levels unlock buildings and systems and raise the hero level ceiling, so meeting a meaningful unlock is often more valuable than upgrading an unrelated building.
- Clear the actual prerequisite. If a required building, clinic star, or supply is holding you back, focus there first. Community upgrade advice also recommends keeping the Lab, Training Grounds, and Alliance Hall current; treat this as guidance, not an official requirement for every level.
- Keep your main squad effective. If the next unlock is distant or your squad is struggling, invest in the heroes and troops you use rather than spreading scarce materials across every option.
- Choose research for its impact on your current goals. Development research can improve several account systems; combat research is more useful when it supports your active lineup or troops.
The official Last Asylum: Plague website describes gathering timber, herbs, food, and supplies to upgrade the Sanctuary. The Google Play listing also describes production, warehouses, residential buildings, and territory expansion. Those systems make resource availability and support-building upkeep part of progression, not just the Sanctuary level number.
How Sanctuary levels shape progression
Sanctuary upgrades unlock systems and increase the level cap for heroes. A third-party guide lists milestones around levels 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, and 20, including new systems, a second squad, Alliance Duel, Raven growth systems, and a third squad. Those are guide-reported milestones, not guaranteed current requirements; check your own upgrade screen because game versions and prerequisites can change.

#1 Best Overall
Before committing to a level push, compare the unlock value with its cost and the condition of your supporting systems. Community upgrade guidance says costs rise substantially later and recommends planning resources and speedups more carefully at higher levels. Its cost and timing tables are estimates, so use the values shown in your game rather than relying on an old table.
- Push when: the next Sanctuary level opens a system or squad slot you can use, and you can meet its prerequisites without leaving important queues or support buildings behind.
- Pause when: a required building, clinic progress, or supplies are the clear blocker, or your core squad needs investment to handle current content.
Keep the clinic moving
The clinic contributes to account progression: a community clinic guide says clinic stars are used in Sanctuary progression. It also describes a fixed doctor-upgrade sequence covering movement, healing, radius, and carry capacity. Since that sequence is fixed rather than freely selectable, the useful action is to keep playing the clinic and completing its available progress instead of trying to design a custom doctor build.

Invest in a focused hero lineup
Hero advancement has separate resource tracks, so identify what you are trying to improve before spending:
- Levels: use Antitoxin.
- Stars: use hero-specific shards or omni shards.
- Skills: use Skill Badges; some skill upgrades require the hero to reach a particular star threshold.
A community hero guide recommends concentrating materials on your main battle lineup and weighing each hero’s role in PvE or PvP. Equipment is another way to strengthen heroes. There is no universally best lineup or gear setup established for every account, so favor heroes and equipment that support the content you play and avoid spreading limited resources too thinly.

Pick research that compounds or solves a current need
A community research guide recommends development technologies early because they can improve construction, research, training, and resource progress. It then suggests Alliance Duel technologies, followed by research that fits the player’s principal heroes or soldiers. Use the reasoning rather than treating that sequence as universal: prioritize a technology when its benefit improves systems you are actively using or supports your chosen lineup. Branch choices involve trade-offs, so a specialized combat upgrade may be the better immediate choice if it addresses your current challenge.

When progress stops, identify the constraint before spending more. The next action should address the system that is actually preventing your next upgrade or making current content difficult.
