If your phone won’t connect to mobile data abroad, first confirm the correct SIM or eSIM line is active, mobile data is on, and roaming is enabled if your carrier requires it. Briefly refresh the connection with Airplane Mode, then try a carrier-approved partner network only if automatic selection fails. If that does not work, your home carrier needs to check roaming eligibility, destination coverage, and your account.

1. Check which SIM or eSIM line is being used for data

On a dual-SIM or dual-eSIM phone, calls and texts can use one line while mobile data uses another. Make sure the line you intend to use abroad is enabled and selected as the mobile-data line. On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Cellular Data), select the number you want to change, and check its line settings. Menu names on other phones vary by model and software version.

2. Turn on mobile data and check data roaming

Mobile data must be enabled for the selected line. When you are outside your carrier’s covered network, data roaming may also need to be enabled. Roaming is a service arrangement with your carrier; turning on the phone setting does not itself provide coverage or make your plan eligible.

On iPhone

Go to Settings > Cellular (or Cellular Data) and confirm Cellular Data is on. Select the line you are using, then open Cellular Data Options and turn on Data Roaming if your carrier requires it. Check your carrier’s roaming rates and plan terms before enabling roaming, since charges or higher rates may apply. Apple’s guidance, dated September 14, 2026, explains roaming settings and options for travelers: Apple Support: About cellular data roaming options for your iPhone and iPad.

Its mobile-network settings guide also covers network mode, network operators, and Access Point Names: Samsung Support: Mobile network settings.

3. Refresh the phone’s network registration

A phone can remain attached to an unsuccessful or outdated network registration after you arrive. On iPhone, Apple recommends: “Turn on Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds. Then turn it off again and let your iPhone automatically select the best network.” Wait a little while after switching Airplane Mode off so the phone can search and register.

4. Try manual network selection if automatic registration fails

Manual selection can help when the phone does not register automatically, but do not select a network at random or force a particular network mode. Your home carrier must have roaming access through that destination’s partner network, and the available partners differ by carrier and country.

  1. Check your home carrier’s roaming information for supported networks in the country you are visiting.
  2. Open your phone’s mobile-network settings and switch network selection from automatic to manual, if that option is available.
  3. Select a listed partner network your carrier supports, then give the phone time to register.
  4. If registration fails, try another supported partner or return network selection to automatic.

For example, Jio’s instructions for its own international roaming service describe selecting LTE or LTE Preferred and manually choosing an available partner if automatic connection fails. That is provider-specific advice, not a universal requirement to force LTE or choose any available network: Jio: How do I select the network manually on my phone?

5. Check APN settings only if you have a signal but no data

If the phone shows a cellular signal or network registration but apps and websites still cannot use mobile data, the Access Point Name (APN) may be incorrect or missing. An APN contains provider-specific network settings. On Galaxy phones, look under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names; the exact path can vary.

Do not guess or copy an APN from an unrelated carrier. Ask your carrier for the exact settings for your line and destination, and follow its instructions. Samsung explains that APNs are network settings needed to connect to a provider in its mobile-network settings guide.

6. Ask your home carrier to check service and account status

If the settings look right but data still does not work, the carrier that provides your line controls whether roaming is enabled and which networks you can use. Contact it over Wi-Fi, a messaging app, or another phone and ask it to verify:

7. Consider a local SIM or travel eSIM if roaming is unavailable

A local physical SIM or travel eSIM can be an alternative when your usual carrier does not offer suitable roaming. Compare destination coverage, the total price and included data, activation requirements, and whether you can keep using your usual number. A replacement physical SIM requires a compatible phone and, for iPhone, an unlocked or SIM-free device. An eSIM requires a phone that supports eSIM. Apple describes these travel options and compatibility considerations in its roaming support guide.

Some eSIM providers have their own setup instructions. For example, Orange Travel tells its customers to make sure the Orange line is active, enable mobile data and roaming, and try manual network selection. Those steps apply to that provider’s service and should not be assumed to fit every travel eSIM: Orange Travel.

If you still have no mobile data

  • No service or no network registration: Recheck the selected line, refresh with Airplane Mode, and confirm with your carrier that a supported roaming partner is available.
  • Signal is present, but data does not load: Confirm mobile data and any required roaming setting, then ask the carrier to verify the plan, data allowance, and APN.
  • Calls or texts work, but data does not: Check which line is selected for mobile data and whether your plan permits data roaming at your destination.
  • Only one network fails: Use a different partner only if your carrier lists it as supported, or switch back to automatic selection.
