Adobe’s latest figures here are for the nine months ended August 28, 2026, with balance-sheet amounts measured on that date. They are not full-year results.
How much cash does Adobe generate?
Adobe reported $7.646 billion of net cash from operating activities for the nine months ended August 28, 2026. For its full fiscal 2025, it reported $10.031 billion. These are operating cash flow figures, not free cash flow. Adobe attributed the latest period’s financing outflow primarily to repurchases; the operating cash flow figure itself should be read alongside working-capital movements and reinvestment, rather than treated as a guaranteed run rate. Adobe’s FY2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q and its FY2025 Form 10-K provide the statements and management discussion.
Check what drove operating cash flow
Separate net income, non-cash adjustments, and changes in operating assets and liabilities in the cash-flow statement. Adobe said FY2025 operating cash flow benefited from higher deferred revenue, partly offset by increased receivables related to billing timing. For the nine months ended August 28, 2026, strong collections lowered trade receivables and provided cash, while higher prepaid expenses and lower accrued expenses and other liabilities used cash. These timing effects help explain why one period’s cash generation may not repeat at the same level.
How should you calculate free cash flow?
A common, transparent definition is operating cash flow minus purchases of property and equipment. State the definition whenever you quote the result; do not silently substitute a company-adjusted metric. Adobe reports $1.187 billion of net cash used in investing activities in FY2025 and $1.908 billion in the nine months ended August 28, 2026, but those totals are not capital expenditure: investing activities can include purchases or sales of investments and acquisitions as well as property and equipment.

To calculate the simple measure, take operating cash flow for a period and subtract the property-and-equipment purchase line for that same period in Adobe’s cash-flow statement. The annual report presents that line separately from investments and acquisitions. This definition is useful for comparing cash generation after physical-asset spending, but it does not capture every possible cash need or imply that all investing outflows recur.
How much debt does Adobe have, and what offsets it?
Use balances from the same reporting date and keep principal distinct from accounting carrying value. On August 28, 2026, Adobe reported $4.359 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $1.280 billion in short-term investments. It reported $248 million of commercial paper and $6.12 billion of senior notes at carrying value; the senior notes’ aggregate principal was $6.15 billion. The company had no borrowings under its $1.5 billion revolving credit facility, which runs through June 30, 2027. The 10-Q provides these balance-sheet and debt disclosures.

One simplified calculation using carrying values is cash plus short-term investments of $5.639 billion, less commercial paper and senior-note carrying values totaling $6.368 billion: approximately $729 million of net debt. This is an arithmetic comparison, not an Adobe-reported metric. It excludes other obligations and does not account for when debt comes due, so it should not replace a maturity analysis.
Separate maturity risk from the net-debt snapshot
Adobe disclosed $1.35 billion of senior notes at carrying value as current on August 28, 2026. Management said it intended to refinance the current portion by its due date, subject to market conditions. That statement is an intention, not proof that refinancing will be available on any particular terms. The filing says the senior notes have no financial covenants, but the current classification and refinancing exposure still matter when assessing liquidity.

Adobe also said its existing cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, anticipated operating cash flows, and available revolving facility would be sufficient for working capital, operating-resource expenditures, and capital expenditures for the next twelve months and the foreseeable future. This is management’s assessment in the August 2026 filing, based on its then-current business plan and revenue prospects—not a guarantee.
What do Adobe’s cash flows say about buybacks?
Adobe’s repurchases are a substantial use of cash. In FY2025, the company spent $11.281 billion repurchasing shares. It reported $10.031 billion of operating cash flow that year, while net cash used in financing activities was $11.060 billion. Adobe said that financing outflow primarily reflected repurchases and repayment of its 1.90% and 3.25% 2025 notes, partly offset by senior-note issuance. For the nine months ended August 28, 2026, net cash used in financing activities was $6.814 billion, primarily due to repurchases. Do not compare a nine-month number with a full-year figure as though they cover the same period.

Repurchase authorization is not the same as cash spent. As of August 28, 2026, $24.55 billion remained under an authorization adopted in April 2026, which expires April 30, 2030. That amount is permission to buy shares, not a commitment or forecast that Adobe will use the full authorization. Adobe’s filing describes the program.
Test whether buybacks offset dilution
Adobe says the program is intended to return value to stockholders and minimize dilution from stock issuances. To evaluate the effect for continuing shareholders, compare shares repurchased with changes in diluted and basic share counts over matching periods, and consider equity awards and their settlement. In FY2025 Adobe recorded $1.942 billion of stock-based compensation. That compensation expense is not a direct measure of shares issued, so it should be considered alongside actual share-count data, not treated as a dollar-for-dollar offset. Gross repurchase spending alone cannot show whether each remaining share gained value; the price paid and the resulting per-share economics also matter.

Does Adobe pay a dividend?
Adobe’s FY2025 annual report said the company did not anticipate paying cash dividends in the foreseeable future. Separately, the FY2026 third-quarter filing says its credit agreement does not prohibit dividends unless a payment would trigger an event of default or one already exists. The first statement describes management’s stated policy outlook; the second describes a contractual restriction. The agreement’s conditional allowance does not mean a dividend is planned.
How to make the overall assessment
Use comparable periods and dates, and assess the cash-flow statement, balance sheet, maturities, and share count together. A useful checklist is:
- Cash-flow durability: identify working-capital effects and non-cash adjustments before treating operating cash flow as recurring capacity.
- Reinvestment: calculate free cash flow using an explicit definition and distinguish capital expenditure from investment purchases and acquisitions.
- Liquidity and debt: compare cash and short-term investments with debt on the same date, identify whether values are principal or carrying value, and inspect near-term maturities separately.
- Capital returns: compare actual repurchases with cash generation, debt repayments and issuance, investment requirements, and share-count changes.
- Per-share result: assess dilution and the price paid for shares; financial statements alone do not establish that a repurchase is attractive at a particular stock price.
For source selection, use the SEC-filed quarterly report for the latest interim period and the annual report for audited historical comparisons. Treat management’s liquidity assessment and stated intentions as statements made on the report date.
