Download the map area while you still have a reliable internet connection, then confirm it is saved in the app before you travel. In Google Maps, offline driving works only when the entire route fits inside the downloaded area; in Apple Maps on iPhone, offline directions can include driving, walking, cycling, and transit where the feature is available.
Choose the right app for your phone and destination
Google Maps offers offline maps on Android and iPhone. Apple Maps offers them on iPhone, but Apple says offline maps are not available in every country or region. Check that your destination is supported and that the offline travel modes you need are available there.

Download an offline map in Google Maps
Connect to the internet and sign in to Google Maps before downloading. Menu wording can vary by app version and platform. Google’s current Android help and its cross-platform instructions describe these options. (Google Maps Help; Google’s offline maps guide)
Save a custom area
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Offline Maps, then Select Your Own Map.
- Move and resize the rectangle so it covers the places you will need.
- Check the estimated download size, then tap Download.
Save a specific city or place
- Search for the city or place in Google Maps.
- Open its information panel and tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Download offline map, review the area and size, then download it.
On Android, Google also documents this route: search for a place, swipe up its information sheet, then tap More > Download offline map > Download. (Google Maps Help)

Download an offline map in Apple Maps
Apple Maps offline downloads are available on iPhone in supported regions. You can start from a point on the map or use the Offline Maps controls. (Apple iPhone User Guide)
Start from a place on the map
- Open Maps and touch and hold the map until a pin appears.
- Tap Download.
- Adjust the selected area and tap Download again.
Choose an area through Offline Maps
- Tap your profile picture or initials beside the search field.
- Tap Offline Maps > Add Offline Map.
- Search for a place or choose Current Location.
- Adjust the map area, then tap Download.
A smaller area uses less storage. In Apple Maps settings, you can choose whether downloads use Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and cellular data. (Apple iPhone User Guide)

Check the download before you leave
- Download while online. Google requires an internet connection. For Apple Maps, select a download setting that suits your connection and data plan.
- Cover the whole route and the places around it. For Google Maps, the complete planned route must fall inside the saved area; an area around only the start or destination is not enough.
- Check storage. Google shows an estimated download size before saving. Apple recommends selecting a smaller area to reduce the file size.
- Confirm the map is saved. Open the app’s Offline Maps list and make sure the destination area appears there. Saving a place or viewing a route online does not by itself download an offline map.
- Check for updates. Google says downloaded maps must be updated before expiry. Within 15 days of expiry, it tries to update them automatically when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi. Apple says downloaded maps update automatically by default unless that setting is changed. (Google Maps Help; Apple iPhone User Guide)
What to expect when navigating offline
Google Maps
Google Maps can provide offline driving directions only when the whole route is covered by the downloaded map. You will not get traffic information or alternative routes, and offline public transport, cycling, and walking directions are unavailable. If your route extends beyond the saved area, download a larger area while online. (Google Maps Help)
Apple Maps
Apple says offline maps can provide turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling, or transit, as well as estimated arrival times and some place-card details, including hours and ratings. These capabilities depend on regional availability. (Apple iPhone User Guide)

If the map or directions are not available
- The download option is missing: Confirm you are using the correct app and phone platform, are online, and—on Google Maps—are signed in. Try the app’s Offline Maps menu if the place panel does not show a download option.
- The route will not work offline in Google Maps: Check that the entire route is within the downloaded rectangle. Also, offline Google Maps does not provide walking, cycling, or public transport directions.
- An Apple Maps download is unavailable: Apple does not offer offline maps in every country or region. Availability can also depend on the selected area.
- A saved map may be out of date: Open the offline-map list while connected and update a map marked expired or due for an update.
