Counter-Strike 2 teams improve their Valve Regional Standings (VRS) position by competing in tournaments whose results count toward VRS and building results with a stable five-player roster. Not every CS2 event counts, and Valve’s public rules do not disclose a complete current points formula—so a match win or event finish cannot be translated reliably into a specific number of points.

What VRS measures—and what it affects

Valve publishes VRS monthly as its official ranking of roster performance. The standings form the basis for direct VRS tournament invitations. A ranked entry belongs to a roster of five specific athletes, not simply to an organization name; when checking a team’s position, confirm which players make up that roster. Valve’s Tournament Operating Requirements define the system and roster.

VRS position can matter in two different ways at Majors: regional standings are used to determine invitations, while global VRS is used for pre-event seeding after invitations are accepted. The Major Supplemental Rulebook identifies EU, Americas, and Asia as the invitation regions.

Which events and matches count toward VRS?

The key distinction is whether a tournament is VRS-ranked. Under Valve’s rules, a ranked tournament’s outcomes generate data used by VRS to determine relative roster performance; an unranked tournament’s outcomes do not. FACEIT describes a VRS-ranked event as one that follows Valve’s Tournament Operating Requirements and awards points toward the standings. Check an event’s status rather than assuming that any CS2 tournament—or ordinary matchmaking—counts. FACEIT’s VRS-ranked event explanation provides its guidance on ranked events.

FACEIT also says teams earn VRS points by competing in matches covered by HLTV.org. It describes ESEA League progression through ranked divisions as one route toward ESL Pro League. That is a competition pathway, not a guarantee that entry, promotion, or a particular win will produce a specified points gain.

How a team can work toward a higher VRS position

  1. Choose competitions that count. Confirm that the event is VRS-ranked under Valve’s requirements. An unranked event result does not contribute to VRS.
  2. Build results with the roster you intend to keep. VRS tracks a five-athlete roster, and direct-invite acceptance has continuity rules. Roster stability helps preserve the connection between results and the lineup seeking an invitation.
  3. Use a suitable competition pathway. If it fits the roster’s level and region, FACEIT’s documented ESEA League progression is one route toward ESL Pro League. Treat it as an opportunity to compete, not a shortcut or assured ranking gain.
  4. Track the relevant monthly standings and invitation date. Tournament operators must use the most recent VRS version available on the invite date for direct VRS invites. Check the event’s own invitation announcement and the applicable snapshot.
  5. Know whether the goal is an invite or a seed. For Major invitations, regional VRS is relevant; after invitations are accepted, global VRS informs pre-event seeding.

Why roster changes can affect invitations

Valve defines a roster as five specific athletes, regardless of their current or later relationship with an organization. A change in team branding alone is not the same as changing the ranked players, while a player move can alter which roster the ranking refers to.

For a direct invite, Valve requires at least three athletes from the invited roster to remain and play in every match of the event. If invited teams do not accept or decline, the tournament operator proceeds down the VRS list to fill the announced slots. These rules make lineup decisions relevant not only to competitive results but also to invite eligibility. Valve’s invite requirements set out the continuity conditions.

Why there is no reliable points-per-win answer

Valve’s public materials establish VRS’s purpose, monthly publication, roster definition, and the distinction between ranked and unranked events. They do not give a complete current calculation specification or dependable point deltas for an individual match win, event placement, LAN appearance, or roster transaction. Avoid treating a visible result as a fixed points award.

HLTV reported on September 12, 2025 that its ranking pages added a detailed breakdown of five sub-factors, values assigned to matches or tournament results, and explanations of how each factor is calculated. Its report says users can inspect a selected team’s ranking details and historical snapshots. This can help explain a displayed ranking for a particular team and snapshot, but it is not a substitute for a current universal Valve formula. Read HLTV’s report on the VRS factor breakdown.

VRS ranking is not the same as Major match seeding

VRS determines invitation order and helps set pre-event seeding, but it is distinct from the rules used to seed later Swiss-stage matchups. Valve’s Major rulebook says those matchups are ordered by current win-loss record, then difficulty score in the current stage, then the initial stage seed. Difficulty score is the sum of opponents’ wins minus opponents’ losses: in the rulebook’s example, opponents with three combined wins and one combined loss produce a score of 2, while opponents with two wins and two losses produce 0. This event-stage tiebreaking is not a VRS points formula. Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook explains the seeding criteria.
