Choose a robot vacuum for scheduled upkeep of accessible floors; choose a stick vacuum for jobs you want to direct yourself, such as stairs, upholstery, tight spaces, and quick spills. The right choice depends on your layout, flooring, and cleaning routine—not on a blanket claim that one type cleans better. If you need both hands-off floor maintenance and targeted cleaning, the two types can complement each other.

Start with the jobs you need the vacuum to do

A robot vacuum is designed to handle recurring floor cleaning with limited input from you. A stick vacuum puts you in control of where and how to clean, and many models can be used with attachments for jobs beyond the floor. Use the tasks below to narrow the choice before comparing individual models.

Choose a robot for routine cleaning on accessible floors

A robot is worth considering if you want regular cleaning without pushing a vacuum yourself and your floors are accessible enough for the model to navigate. Open areas can be a good fit, but furniture, obstacles, room layout, thresholds, and carpet all affect whether a particular robot will work well. LG describes robots as suited to scheduled floor care and open-plan spaces in its Australia buying guidance.

Choose a stick for stairs, upholstery, and spot jobs

A stick is the more adaptable choice when you need to carry the vacuum between levels, clean furniture, reach into tight spaces, or deal with a quick spill. Its usefulness for these jobs depends on its weight, reach, floor head, and included attachments. Check that the tools supplied suit the surfaces and spaces you actually clean; Samsung’s US stick-vacuum guide highlights runtime, attachments, and maneuverability as selection factors.

Consider both if your needs are split

A robot can maintain accessible floors on a schedule while a stick handles stairs, upholstery, and targeted cleaning. Buying both is a household-specific choice, not a requirement: consider whether the robot covers enough of your routine work to justify having a second machine.

Decision factor Robot vacuum Stick vacuum
Main role Scheduled, recurring floor upkeep with limited user input. User-directed cleaning, including targeted and above-floor jobs when the right tools are included.
Layout and reach Check navigation around rooms, furniture, obstacles, and transitions; it is not a substitute for carrying a vacuum up stairs. Can be carried between levels and directed into tight spaces or onto furniture, subject to the model’s weight and attachments.
Flooring Check the exact model’s performance on your carpet pile, floor transitions, and typical debris. Check the floor head and available tools against your hard floors, rugs, and carpets.
Coverage and runtime Assess navigation, debris capacity, coverage, and whether the model resumes after charging. Dyson’s robot-vacuum guidance identifies flooring, home size, expected performance, layout complexity, and maintenance as factors to consider. Compare usable runtime in the mode you expect to use, charging behavior, weight, and whether its tools suit the range of rooms and surfaces. Samsung’s US guide discusses runtime and attachments.
Effort and care Automation reduces pushing, but brushes, sensors, dock, and bins still need attention. Requires manual operation; filter cleaning and bin emptying are typical upkeep.
Cost Compare current models and docks; no current price comparison is established here. Compare current models and included tools; no current price comparison is established here.

Check flooring, especially carpet pile

Both categories can be suitable for mixed floors, but the model’s head, brush design, and ability to manage transitions matter. LG’s Australia guidance says both types can clean hardwood, with robots suited to daily upkeep and sticks useful for targeted cleaning.

For carpet, check the robot maker’s stated suitability for the pile in your home rather than assuming every robot handles every carpet. LG says its robots can clean low- to medium-pile carpet and notes that deep-pile carpet may benefit from a stick’s power. That is a reason to consider a stick for deep-pile work, not proof that no robot can clean carpet. For any stick, verify that its floor head is appropriate for the carpet and rugs you own.

Evaluate the specific model before you buy

For a robot: verify that it can cover your rooms

  • Check whether its navigation and mapping features suit your room layout and obstacles.
  • Look at thresholds, furniture clearance, and the carpet types the model is intended to handle.
  • Match debris capacity and coverage to your home, and check whether cleaning can resume after charging if the model needs to recharge mid-task.
  • Factor in ongoing care for brushes, sensors, the dock, and bins.

Dyson’s manufacturer guidance, published July 1, 2026, frames robot selection around flooring, home size, and expected cleaning performance. Its recommendations are useful selection criteria, not independent comparative test results.

For a stick: match reach, runtime, and tools to your routine

  • Check the vacuum’s weight and reach if you will carry it upstairs or clean above the floor.
  • Compare usable runtime and charging behavior for the mode you expect to use, not just a headline runtime.
  • Confirm which attachments are included and whether they suit upholstery, crevices, or other targeted jobs.
  • Consider whether the floor head works for your combination of hard floors, rugs, and carpet.
  • Plan for manual operation, bin emptying, and filter care.

Make the choice by household

  • Mostly open hard floors and a desire for scheduled upkeep: Start by comparing robot models that can navigate your layout and handle your transitions.
  • Stairs, upholstery, and frequent spot cleaning: Favor a stick with suitable reach and attachments.
  • Deep-pile carpet: Consider a stick for the manual cleaning role, and assess any robot against the exact carpet and model guidance.
  • Large or complex home: For a robot, scrutinize navigation, coverage, capacity, and charging behavior. For a stick, check runtime, charging, weight, and tools across all the areas you intend to clean.
  • Mixed floors and mixed tasks: Either category may fit; decide whether scheduled maintenance or hands-on flexibility is the greater need, or whether using both would serve distinct jobs.
