If Copilot’s model picker is missing or a mode such as Think Deeper is unavailable, first identify which Copilot surface you’re using. Consumer Copilot chat, the Researcher agent, and Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps have different controls and access requirements. Then check the signed-in account, license, app or browser setup, and whether the feature is temporarily unavailable.
First identify which Copilot picker is missing
“Model picker” can mean different things in different Microsoft products. A fix for one surface may not apply to another.

Check the account and access level
Confirm whether Copilot is signed in with a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account using Microsoft Entra. Copilot adapts its experience to the signed-in identity, and availability varies by subscription and organization settings. If this is a work or school account, ask your Microsoft 365 administrator to verify that the right Copilot license is assigned and that tenant policy allows the feature. Microsoft’s account guidance explains the distinction between account types.
Also distinguish licensed priority access from standard access. Microsoft says standard Copilot Chat access is subject to capacity; during high demand, access to some capabilities, including models and advanced reasoning, may be temporarily restricted or vary during the day. A temporarily unavailable choice does not by itself prove that the app is broken. See Microsoft’s explanation of standard versus priority access.

Fix a missing Copilot button in a Microsoft 365 app
If you’re in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, or OneNote, start by checking for the Dynamic Action Button at the lower-right of the document. Microsoft says users can move it next to the ribbon. In this case, the entry point may have moved rather than the Copilot capability disappearing.
- Update Office. Install the latest available build for your device.
- Refresh the license where supported. In a desktop Office app, use File > Account > Update License, then close and restart the Office apps.
- Check the update channel for business features. Microsoft says business users on Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel need Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel for the Copilot features described in its troubleshooting guidance.
- Review connected experiences. In Account Privacy settings, “Experiences that analyze your content” and “All connected experiences” should be on. If your organization manages these settings, contact IT rather than changing them yourself.
- For Office on the web, refresh the page. If the control still isn’t there, continue with the account and license checks above.
Microsoft’s missing-button article is marked last updated July 2026. Its guidance is specific to the described Microsoft 365 apps and features; it does not establish that changing channels or privacy settings fixes consumer Copilot or Researcher access.

Resolve a Microsoft 365 web license-validation error
If the problem is an explicit license-validation error in a Microsoft 365 web app, confirm that the browser is signed in with the account holding the license. Microsoft says the browser must support third-party cookies to validate a Copilot license in Microsoft 365 web apps; private browsing and some browser configurations may block them by default. Check the browser’s current cookie settings and follow organization policy. This is a targeted step for license-validation errors, not a general fix for every missing picker. Microsoft’s license-validation guidance was marked last updated February 2026.
Allow for temporary access changes or an app transition
For consumer Copilot or a recently transitioned Copilot app, confirm that you’re using the same account and identity provider as before. Refresh the web page or restart the app, and follow any in-app migration message. Some features may take time to appear during a rollout or move between app experiences. Microsoft also notes that some content and experiences may be retired or may not carry forward; that is different from a picker being hidden by a setting.

If a choice remains unavailable, check again later before treating it as a persistent fault. Microsoft characterizes temporary restrictions on standard access during high demand as a capacity measure, not necessarily a malfunction. Persistent absence is more likely to require checking the exact surface, entitlement, or organization policy.

- Use Get Help for Microsoft 365. Microsoft provides a Copilot license troubleshooter for users who believe they have a license but cannot see the Copilot icon in eligible Microsoft 365 apps, as well as a connectivity troubleshooter that checks firewall rules and other blockers. Start from Microsoft’s missing-button troubleshooting page.
- Contact your administrator. For a work or school account, ask IT to verify the assigned license, channel, and managed privacy or tenant settings.
- Report a persistent Copilot app issue. Include when it began, your device and operating system, the account type, which Copilot surface is affected, the exact error text, and a screenshot.
Microsoft’s public guidance cannot determine your assigned license, tenant policy, device state, or live service condition. Those details are needed to identify the cause when the steps above do not resolve it.
