Yes. A Quest headset can stream PC VR over Wi-Fi even when the PC is also connected to the router wirelessly. The PC and headset should be on the same local network. However, Meta’s recommended Air Link setup connects the PC to the router by Ethernet, so an all-Wi-Fi setup may work but is not Meta’s preferred configuration.
How wireless PC VR works
Streaming software sends PC VR content across your local network to the headset. Meta describes Air Link as using a wireless network to stream PC VR content to Quest. The PC does not have to be wired to the router for you to try this, but wireless conditions can affect the experience: Meta notes that wireless degradation can cause dropped frames and lag.
This is local-network streaming, not a requirement to connect the headset and PC to the internet through separate arrangements. For the best chance of a stable connection, keep both devices on the same network and use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for the headset.
Choose a streaming option
| Option | Best fit | Cost and setup notes |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Air Link | Quest owners who want Meta’s built-in wireless PC VR option. | Meta’s option; its recommended setup uses Ethernet for the PC, though you can try the PC over Wi-Fi. |
| Steam Link | People streaming SteamVR games from a PC. | VRChat describes it as free. Keep the PC and headset on the same network. |
| Virtual Desktop | People who prefer a separate wireless streaming app. | Paid Quest app, purchased from the Meta Quest store, plus the PC Streamer application. |
These options are documented by VRChat Help, which recommends the PC and headset share a network and preferably use 5 GHz Wi-Fi; it also suggests a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router. App menus may have changed since that guide was updated on August 6, 2024.

What to expect with an all-Wi-Fi setup
Using Wi-Fi for both the PC and headset is possible, but the available guidance does not establish that it will perform as well as a PC connected by Ethernet. There is no supported percentage or latency figure to apply to this setup. Results depend on the quality and congestion of your wireless network, so a strong signal alone does not guarantee a smooth stream.
Meta Store Support’s Air Link best practices recommend that the PC connect to the router or access point by Ethernet, while the headset uses 5 GHz AC or AX Wi-Fi. Meta also advises placing the router in the same room as the headset or in line of sight, at least 1 metre (3.3 feet) above the ground, and using a non-mesh configuration. Those are recommendations for Air Link, not prerequisites that prove wireless-PC streaming cannot work.

Improve a weak or unstable connection
- Put the devices on the same local network. Check that the PC and headset are connected through the same router or access point.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi where possible. Keep the headset on a 5 GHz AC or AX connection for Air Link, and avoid a congested or weak band if you have another suitable option.
- Reduce distance and obstructions. Move the router or access point into the headset’s room or into clear line of sight, and raise it at least 1 metre (3.3 feet) off the floor.
- Try a non-mesh access point arrangement for Air Link. This follows Meta’s stated best practice; it is not a guarantee that every mesh setup will fail.
- Consider hardware only if the network remains the bottleneck. A Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router may be a useful upgrade if your current network is weak or congested, but the cited guidance does not make a new router necessary.
If the stream still drops frames or lags, Ethernet for the PC is the clearest change to try for Air Link because it matches Meta’s recommendation. You can also compare another streaming option, but changing apps will not remove underlying Wi-Fi congestion or poor coverage.
