Free-to-play games can be downloaded and played without a subscription or credit card, according to Steam Support. Make sure you add the game while signed in to the Steam account you want to use; it will appear in that account’s Library.
How to find free games on Steam
- Open Steam’s free-game listings. Use the Free Games search results or browse Steam’s Free to Play category. You can also use the Free filter on the Steam store search page.
- Check the product type. Steam’s free results can include more than complete standalone games. Read the listing to see whether it is a full game, a demo, downloadable content (DLC), a soundtrack, a playtest, or another product.
- Open the game’s Store page. Review its current availability, access terms, and any listed requirements or compatibility details. Store labels and offers can change, so rely on the live page rather than an old promotion or screenshot.
Check what “free” means before claiming
Free to Play
Steam Support says: “Free to play games are available to download for free and can be played without a subscription or a credit card.” Optional in-game purchases may still be offered. Steam says you are not required to buy items or content to play or progress, though Wallet funds are needed if you choose to purchase supported items.
Free Weekend
A Free Weekend is a time-limited promotion, not the same as an ongoing Free to Play listing. Steam’s store can display an end time for these offers. Check the game’s own page for the current access terms and when the promotion ends; do not assume the offer remains available afterward.
Other free listings
A free price alone does not establish that a listing is a complete game or that access is permanent. Confirm the product type and current terms on its Store page before proceeding.

How to claim and install a free game
- Sign in to the Steam account you intend to use. Steam games are tied to the account where they are registered.
- Open the game’s Store page and follow its current action button. The displayed label and page layout can change; use the install or play action shown for that listing.
- Find the game in your Library. Steam’s new-user guide explains that registered titles appear in the Library for that account. Select the game there to install it.

Do you need a credit card or a paid Steam game?
No credit card or subscription is required to download and play a free-to-play game, according to Steam Support. However, Steam classifies an account with no purchased game and no Wallet funds as a “Limited User” account. Some Steam Community features may be restricted, and an individual game may impose its own restrictions. These account limits do not mean a payment card is required for a free-to-play download.
