The two views can show different numbers because they may represent different pollutants, locations, data sources, or times. Recheck when conditions are changing, and follow local emergency instructions.
Check the local AQI first
- Open AirNow.gov or use the AirNow app.
- Enter a city and state or ZIP code to see local current and forecast air-quality information.
- Note the AQI category and which pollutant the reading represents. The general AirNow AQI reflects ozone or particulate matter, whichever has the higher AQI. It is a useful check for ozone and overall air quality, but it does not necessarily describe wildfire smoke specifically.
Check PM2.5 when smoke is present or expected
Open the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and inspect nearby PM2.5 information. Fine particle pollution is the key pollutant tracked for wildfire smoke in this view. The map can also show fires, satellite-detected smoke plumes, and Smoke Outlooks where available. EPA explains how to use the map and find smoke reports in its Fire and Smoke Map guide.
Why AirNow’s AQI and smoke map can differ
The homepage or dial may show ozone if no PM2.5 monitor is available nearby, or if another pollutant has a higher AQI. The Fire and Smoke Map focuses on PM2.5 and can include temporary monitors and sensors as well as smoke and fire context. A monitor reading, sensor reading, and map layer may refer to different places, sources, or times, so one number does not describe every location nearby. AirNow explains these views in Using AirNow During Wildfires and How To Use This Site.
Read plume imagery as context, not as a surface measurement
A satellite-detected smoke plume does not by itself prove that smoke is affecting ground-level air where you are. Plumes also cannot be seen through clouds or at night. Use nearby PM2.5 readings and local air-quality information to assess conditions rather than treating the plume outline as a ground-level reading.

Understand the AQI categories
AirNow’s current AQI categories are shown below. The ranges are breakpoints, not a guarantee that conditions are identical across a region.
| AQI | Category |
|---|---|
| 0–50 | Good |
| 51–100 | Moderate |
| 101–150 | Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups |
| 151–200 | Unhealthy |
| 201–300 | Very Unhealthy |
| 301–500 | Hazardous |
Use the category as a guide alongside AirNow’s health advice and local alerts; it does not replace an emergency order or personal medical advice.

Recheck as conditions change
Smoke concentrations and plume movement can change quickly. Check recent readings and trends again before leaving if conditions are shifting, and consult local air-quality agency forecasts. The map may include Smoke Outlooks where available. For broader preparation and current smoke guidance, see the EPA’s Prepare for Wildfire Smoke page.

If air quality is unhealthy, delay outdoor activity until conditions improve when possible. Children, pregnant people, older adults, and people with heart or lung disease or certain other conditions need particular care. CDC advises checking community air quality and following local emergency-management instructions; see its wildfire safety guidance.

If you must go outside during unhealthy wildfire smoke, EPA recommends spending as little time outdoors as possible, reducing exertion, and taking breaks in cleaner air when available. Consider a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator for particle protection. Surgical masks, paint masks, and loose-fitting dust masks do not provide equivalent protection from smoke. See EPA’s guidance on wildland fire smoke questions and reducing smoke exposure.
