To return an online purchase, check the seller’s return terms, start the return through the seller or marketplace, ship it using the required instructions, and save the tracking and delivery evidence. Then check the refund separately in your order history and original payment account: a parcel marked delivered does not by itself confirm that your money has been refunded.
1. Check the return terms before sending anything
Open the order details and read the seller’s current return policy. Look for the return deadline, eligible item conditions, required authorization, approved shipping method, and any fees. Sale items may have different terms. Confirm who pays return postage and whether the seller provides a prepaid label or requires another return method. The FTC’s online-shopping guidance recommends reviewing the seller’s policies before buying; the same terms tell you how to proceed with a return.
If you bought through a marketplace, check whether the seller or the platform handles the request and which channel you must use. Marketplace procedures differ. Start with the platform’s order page or the seller’s stated process, and save the return authorization, instructions, and confirmation message. See the FTC’s marketplace guidance.
2. Start and send the return with a record of each step
- Request the return. Use the seller’s or marketplace’s stated return channel. Save the authorization number, return instructions, and any confirmation.
- Prepare the parcel as instructed. Follow the seller’s directions for packaging, labels, and included items. Do not assume you can use a different address or shipping method.
- Keep proof when you hand it over. Save the carrier drop-off receipt and tracking number. The FTC notes that many sites provide tracking options and recommends keeping tracking numbers and related records.
- Check the parcel’s progress. Follow the carrier tracking until it records delivery, and save the delivery confirmation or a screenshot of the tracking record.
Keep the order number, return authorization, receipts, tracking details, and seller messages together. These records help establish when you requested and shipped the return if you need to ask about a delay.

3. Track the refund separately from the return parcel
Use the order page to check whether the seller has received or accepted the return and whether the refund is marked as processed. Check the original payment account as well; the display time can depend on the payment provider. Record the parcel delivery date and any refund-processing period the seller promised.
Parcel tracking answers whether the return shipment reached its destination. It does not confirm that the seller accepted the return or that the payment was refunded. Treat those as separate status checks, and keep any refund confirmation until the money appears in the relevant account.

4. What return rights and deadlines apply?
The seller’s policy sets the practical process, subject to consumer law where you live. Return rights, exclusions, and refund timing depend on location, purchase type, and payment method; these examples are not universal deadlines.
European Union
Your Europe describes a 14-day withdrawal right for many online distance purchases. For goods, the period generally runs from delivery. Consumers may have to pay return postage and packaging unless the seller offers to pay or did not disclose the cost. Exceptions and national rules can apply. Citizens Advice describes a general 14-day cooling-off period for many purchases made online, by phone, or by mail order. Exceptions include some bespoke or made-to-measure goods. Check Citizens Advice’s guidance on cancelling purchases for the rules that apply to your purchase and location.

For most payment types, the FTC says a seller must refund within seven business days of accepting a return. This is US guidance, not a worldwide standard; see the FTC’s online-shopping guidance and check which rules apply to your transaction.

5. What to do if the refund is late
- Contact the seller or marketplace through its official channel. Include the order number, return authorization, parcel tracking number, delivery confirmation, and relevant dates.
- Ask for a specific status. Ask whether the return was received and accepted, whether the refund was issued, and when it was processed. Save the reply and your message.
- Escalate if the issue remains unresolved. If you have a genuine payment problem, promptly ask your card issuer or payment provider whether its dispute process applies. Available protections and filing deadlines vary, so check them directly rather than waiting indefinitely for a seller response.
