For a tight upfront budget and a TV-first setup, a console is often the simpler, less expensive starting point. A gaming PC may be worth the higher initial spend if you want upgrades, PC-only games, multitasking, or one computer for both work and play. The real answer depends on what equipment you already own, which games you plan to play, and whether those games require a paid online membership. Compare the whole setup and your own usage—not just the price of the hardware.
Start with the cost of the complete setup
A console can be ready to play on a TV you already own, using its included controller. A desktop gaming PC may also call for a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. If you already have suitable equipment, that difference can shrink; if you need to buy it, include it in the comparison.
Build a budget using the costs that apply to you:
- Hardware: the specific console model or a defined PC configuration.
- Missing gear: display, keyboard, mouse, controller, headset, or other items you do not already own.
- Online play: the membership, if any, required by the specific games and multiplayer modes you use.
- Games: your likely purchases, accounting for launch prices, sales, subscriptions, and free-to-play titles.
- Later costs: storage, repairs, upgrades, and whether the PC also replaces a computer you would otherwise buy.
- Resale: include it only if you can make comparable assumptions for both platforms.
There is no established, current, model-matched comparison here between a specific gaming PC and console at the same performance target. A personalized basket is more useful than a universal winner.
What the current PS5 price benchmark tells you
For the U.S., Sony Interactive Entertainment announced recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026: PS5 at $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99, and PS5 Pro at $899.99. These are manufacturer recommendations, not guaranteed prices at every retailer. Sony attributed the global price changes to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape,” in a March 27, 2026 post by Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President, Global Marketing. Sony’s announcement also lists U.K. recommendations of £569.99, £519.99, and £789.99, respectively, and Europe recommendations of €649.99, €599.99, and €899.99.

How five-year estimates compare—and why they are not a forecast
HP’s guide presents broad estimates for a five-year PC-versus-console scenario. Its component estimates and totals are shown below as HP’s figures, not as a guaranteed household cost or a current like-for-like comparison.

| Cost category | Gaming PC estimate | PS5/Xbox Series X console estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Initial hardware | $800–$2,500 | $400–$500 |
| Peripherals and accessories | $200–$500 | $60–$150 |
| Online subscription over five years | $0 in HP’s guide | $300–$800, varying by platform and tier |
| Optional upgrades over five years | $200–$500 | About $100 for storage expansion |
| Ten-game estimate | $200–$400 | $400–$700 |
| Estimated five-year total | $1,400–$3,900 | $1,260–$2,250 |
HP does not establish the method or underlying dataset behind these broad estimates. Its categories assume different hardware, accessory, subscription, upgrade, and game costs; the numbers are therefore an illustration, not a prediction of what you will spend. HP’s comparison guide is a starting point, but replace its assumptions with your own equipment and habits.
Account for online play and the games you want
Online multiplayer rules vary by game and platform
HP describes online multiplayer as free on PC for the vast majority of games and says consoles require a paid subscription for online multiplayer. PlayStation’s own guidance is more specific: a separately sold PlayStation Plus membership is required for online play in certain PS5 games. Rules can differ by game, platform, and mode, so check the particular games you play rather than assuming every title has the same requirement. PlayStation’s PC gaming support page also lists selected PlayStation games available on PC and says Helldivers 2 supports play between PC and PS5.

Check access, exclusives, and timing title by title
PC and console libraries overlap more than they once did, but some games and release timing remain platform-specific. Make a short list of games you care about, then verify the platform, release date, cross-play support, and any subscription requirement for each one. A game that is only available—or playable with your friends—on one platform can matter more to your budget than a broad hardware estimate.
Choose by how you want to use the machine
| If this matters most… | A console may suit you when… | A gaming PC may suit you when… |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront spending | You want a simpler TV setup and already own a suitable television. | You already have a monitor and input gear, or accept paying more for a defined PC setup. |
| Setup and maintenance | You prefer a fixed platform with fewer configuration choices. | You are comfortable choosing settings, components, and upgrades. |
| Long-term flexibility | You want to use a console as a straightforward gaming device. | You value upgrade options and use beyond gaming, such as work or creative tasks. |
| Games and friends | Your must-play games or friends’ multiplayer platform point to a console. | Your preferred games, storefronts, or multiplayer groups point to PC. |
These are general tradeoffs, not guarantees: a PC’s value depends on the configuration and other work it actually replaces, while a console’s convenience depends on your setup and games.

Consider a handheld PC separately
A handheld PC is a different kind of option, not a direct price comparison with a desktop or living-room console. Valve describes Steam Deck as portable PC gaming that can connect to a TV or monitor and supports microSD storage expansion. Its product page lists U.K. prices of £649 for the 256GB LCD model and £779 for the 512GB OLED model; those page prices are regional and volatile, so check current local pricing before comparing. Valve’s Steam Deck page provides the product details.

- Write down your must-play games. Confirm their platform availability, release timing, multiplayer compatibility, and any online membership requirement.
- List equipment you already own. Count a TV or monitor only if it suits the experience you want; include any missing PC peripherals or console accessories.
- Price a real hardware option. Use the exact console model or a defined PC configuration, then check current local retailer prices.
- Estimate your actual five-year use. Add games, required subscriptions, storage, repairs, and likely upgrades. Include resale only when comparing like with like.
- Decide whether the PC serves another purpose. If it replaces a separate work or home computer you would otherwise purchase, account for that value explicitly rather than treating all PC cost as gaming cost.
If the console basket fits your budget and covers your games, it is often the lower-friction choice. If you value the PC’s broader uses and flexibility enough to cover its higher setup cost, a gaming PC can be the better budget decision for you.
