Xiaomi documents both uses on its Xiaomi 17 Pro models and the older Mi 11 Ultra, but the available features differ by model.
What can a rear screen do?
The clearest use is selfie framing. The rear cameras may be the ones you want to use, and a display on the back can show a preview while you pose. A second use is glanceable information—such as the time, battery status or notifications—when the phone is placed screen-down. Some implementations also add controls or customization.
These are manufacturer-described functions, not proof that every rear-screen phone offers the same tools or that the extra display improves photo quality, convenience or battery life. The documented Xiaomi examples below illustrate how features vary by model.

Which features matter for your use?
If you want to frame selfies with the rear cameras
Look for an explicit rear-camera preview or viewfinder feature. Xiaomi lists that function for both the 17 Pro models and the Mi 11 Ultra. The feature descriptions establish that a preview is offered; they do not establish that it produces better photos or is easier to use than a front-camera selfie.
If you want quick information without opening the main display
The Mi 11 Ultra’s global product page specifically describes checking the time, battery life and notifications while the phone is face-down. Xiaomi describes dynamic or real-time notifications on the 17 Pro models, but the cited materials do not specify an identical set of glanceable items.

Xiaomi India lists music control for the Mi 11 Ultra. Xiaomi’s presentation lists sticky notes and AI wallpapers for the 17 Pro series. Those details should not be assumed to apply across generations or to other manufacturers’ phones.
What the sales figures do—and do not—show
Xiaomi reported nearly 30% year-over-year growth in Xiaomi 17 Series sales volume in its first month compared with the Xiaomi 15 Series, and said the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max together made up over 80% of Xiaomi 17 Series sales volume during that period. Xiaomi defines the first-month window as September 25, 2025, 19:00:00 through October 26, 2025, 23:59:59 (Xiaomi’s announcement). These are company-reported figures, not independent market measurements, and they do not establish that the rear display drove sales.
