You generally cannot remove a home address from every public record with one request. Protecting it takes two separate efforts: ask the government agency that holds a record what confidentiality or exemption rules apply, and opt out of each people-search site that republishes your information. If you face a safety risk, check your state’s Address Confidentiality Program (ACP) and contact a qualified local victim advocate; a commercial opt-out alone is not a safety plan.
Understand where your address is coming from
People-search sites are data brokers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says they may compile information from property records, voter registration, other brokers, and public social profiles. As a result, the same address can appear in several places for different reasons.
Separate the original record from copies. A county property-record office or election office may hold a government record; a people-search site may publish a broker listing assembled from that record and other sources. Removing a broker listing does not remove the underlying government record, and the listing may return or appear through a relative or associate. FTC guidance on people-search sites explains these limits.
Find the listings and the public records
- Search your name and known address on people-search sites. Record each exact listing URL and the site’s name.
- For each result, note whether it appears to be a government record, a broker listing, or information posted by a user. Search results can help map exposure, but they cannot establish that you have found every copy.
- Identify the government record and its custodian where possible—for example, the county property-record office or election office. Ask whether the record is public, whether a statutory exception could apply to you, and which form or evidence the agency requires.
There is no universal request that guarantees removal of a home address from property records. The applicable rules depend on the record, jurisdiction, and your circumstances.

Check whether a state confidentiality program or exemption applies
State protections are not uniform. An ACP may provide an eligible participant with a substitute mailing address, while a record-specific law may limit disclosure of certain information to a particular agency or record. Neither should be assumed to update every public record automatically. Verify eligibility, covered records, required evidence, and whether you must contact each agency separately on the official state program or agency site.

A National Association of Secretaries of State overview dated October 2024 describes ACPs as state programs that use alternate mailing addresses to reduce exposure in public voter records, and notes that administration differs by state. Opt out of people-search sites one by one
- Open the site’s opt-out or privacy-request instructions and locate your report or listing.
- Submit the request using the site’s stated process. Follow its identity-verification steps carefully; do not provide more information than the process requires.
- Repeat for every site where you found a listing. An opt-out at one broker does not cover other sites or erase the government source record.
- Keep a record of the site, listing URL, date submitted, and any confirmation so you can check whether the request took effect.
The FTC recommends finding your report, following that site’s opt-out procedure, and repeating the process across other sites. It also warns that information may remain in government records or listings about relatives, neighbors, or associates, and can reappear when information changes. See the FTC’s people-search guidance.
Choose between doing it yourself and paying for help

The FTC recognizes paid opt-out assistance as an option, not as a way to delete government records or guarantee that a listing will never return. Compare the service’s actual coverage and repeat-removal process before paying.

Set a routine to catch returning listings
Recheck periodically for your name and address on the sites that showed listings, and repeat opt-outs when information returns. New records or data can repopulate a broker listing, so treat removal as ongoing maintenance rather than a one-time fix. If you use a paid service, its scan cadence and reporting determine how much of that follow-up it actually handles.

Do not rely only on broker opt-outs if you are being stalked, threatened, or otherwise at risk. Contact a qualified local victim advocate or the relevant state ACP office to ask about eligibility and next steps. Some programs require an application through a designated advocate agency; Indiana’s program is one example. State rules and covered records differ, so use official state instructions and ask each relevant agency what additional notice it needs.
