For most PlayStation account holders with a compatible device and a reliable recovery plan, a passkey offers stronger protection against phishing than two-step verification (2SV). Passkeys use a cryptographic credential tied to PlayStation; 2SV asks you to enter a code that can potentially be intercepted or relayed. Both add protection beyond a password alone, and 2SV may be the more practical option if passkeys do not work reliably on your devices.
How PlayStation passkeys and 2SV differ
With a passkey, you approve sign-in using a device prompt, such as a fingerprint, face scan or screen-lock PIN. PlayStation describes passkeys as a password replacement that lets you sign in using those device checks (PlayStation passkey support). The passkey uses public-key cryptography, and the credential is bound to the service rather than being a code you type into a sign-in page.
With 2SV, you enter your password and then provide a second code delivered by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. PlayStation also provides one-time-use backup codes for situations when you cannot access your usual phone or method (PlayStation 2SV support).
Which method is safer against phishing?
A passkey has the clearest security advantage when the threat is a fake sign-in page. FIDO explains that passkeys use public-key cryptography and credentials bound to the online service. NIST defines phishing resistance as preventing authentication secrets or valid outputs from being disclosed to an impostor verifier. Its current guidance, NIST SP 800-63B-4, published in July 2025, says manually entered one-time codes are not phishing-resistant because they are not tied to a specific session and can be relayed.

That is a comparison of authentication mechanisms, not a measured PlayStation account-takeover rate. The available sources do not establish how much either option changes the odds of a PlayStation account being compromised. A passkey is not an absolute guarantee: a compromised device or a weak account-recovery route can still put access at risk. Likewise, 2SV is not useless; it adds a step an attacker must overcome if they have only obtained your password.

PlayStation’s instructions describe these as sign-in-method choices. They do not establish that every account can keep passkeys and 2SV enabled simultaneously as independent layers; check the Security options shown in your account for your region.

Check passkey compatibility before switching
PlayStation lets you set up a passkey in Account Management > Security. On PS5, you can also start in Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey. Follow the prompts on your device to create the passkey. PlayStation recommends an up-to-date browser and notes that passkeys work on PS5, PS4 and connected devices, including most phones running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later (PlayStation passkey setup and troubleshooting).
Before relying on the passkey for routine sign-in, test it on the console, browser or connected device you actually use. PlayStation flags potential problems with Remote Play on Mac, some Android and Windows device combinations, and some hardware security keys. If the passkey flow fails, the “Can’t Sign In with Passkey” route offers email or QR-code sign-in options.

Set up recovery before you need it
If you choose a passkey
- Confirm the device and browser you use support the passkey flow, then complete a real sign-in.
- Check that you have another working device or verification method. If your phone is lost, PlayStation says you can use the same verification method on another device to reach Account Management and register a new passkey.
- If no other device works, contact PlayStation Support for help recovering access.
If you choose 2SV
- Go to Account Management > Security, choose SMS or an authenticator app, and follow PlayStation’s activation steps.
- Save the ten one-time-use backup codes somewhere secure and accessible if your phone is unavailable.
- If you cannot access your phone or number and do not have a backup code, follow PlayStation’s Online Assistant route for “I don’t have access to my phone or mobile number.”
Protect the recovery path as carefully as the sign-in method. Do not scan a QR code just because someone sends it or promises free vouchers, gift cards or in-game items, and do not share your account details. PlayStation warns about QR-code scams and account-detail theft (PlayStation QR-code scam guidance).

- Choose a passkey if PlayStation sign-in works reliably on your devices and you have a dependable way to recover access. It offers stronger phishing resistance than a manually entered code.
- Use 2SV if a passkey is unavailable or unreliable on the devices you use. Choose SMS or an authenticator app, and keep the backup codes accessible and secure.
Whichever you use, the method is only one part of account security: keep your devices protected and your recovery channels under your control.
