An E-Ink front panel for the Steam Machine is a separate, wireless status-and-art display—not a conventional gaming monitor. In the documented Inkterface DIY build, an ESP32-S3 controller drives a monochrome e-paper screen, while companion software gathers selected information on the Steam Machine and sends it to the panel over Bluetooth. The display and electronics sit in a removable, magnet-retained faceplate.
How the panel works
The system has three hardware roles: the e-paper panel shows the image, a breakout board provides its display interface, and an ESP32-S3 Feather controller runs firmware that updates the panel. On the Steam Machine, companion software collects the chosen information and communicates with the controller wirelessly over Bluetooth. The panel therefore does not receive ordinary video from HDMI or DisplayPort.
The screen and controller
The documented build uses a 5.83-inch monochrome e-paper panel specified at 648 × 480 pixels and based on the UC8179 chipset. That format suits text, icons, status figures, and still artwork. The cited documentation does not give a measured refresh time, so a specific update-speed claim cannot be made. Adafruit’s panel specification identifies the display dimensions and chipset.
Wiring and board revisions
The Feather connects to the e-ink breakout with wires for signals including MOSI, MISO, SCK, ground, 3.3V-to-VIN, and display-control lines. The build notes distinguish Feather V1 and V2 logical pin assignments. Use the pin table for the exact board revision; matching signal names alone is not enough to establish that a wiring diagram is interchangeable.

Bluetooth connection to the Steam Machine
The host-side setup described by the project enables Bluetooth, starts the companion app, discovers the panel, and can install the app as a user service. The panel advertises a name beginning with INKTF followed by part of its Bluetooth address. Valve’s general Steam Machine display-support page concerns external display support and troubleshooting; it is not a description of this faceplate mod.
What information and images it can show
The project documentation describes configurable readouts and a way to register additional data collectors. In the documented original-style telemetry layout, the panel can show CPU, GPU, and fan information. A community fork adds a Now Playing mode that displays the active game’s box art, playtime, and achievement progress; those are fork features, not features to assume are present in Valve’s original project.

The fork says achievement progress is obtained from the Steam Community profile endpoint and requires public game details. If those profile details are private, achievement information may not be available to the panel. The display is best understood as an auxiliary information surface rather than a replacement for the main screen.
What building the DIY faceplate involves
The documented parts include an ESP32-S3 Feather with 2MB PSRAM, an e-ink breakout and panel, a battery, wires, screws, magnets, and printed enclosure parts. The build entails wiring or soldering the controller and breakout, mounting the boards to the printed plate, carefully positioning the fragile display flex, adding the battery, and assembling the magnetic faceplate. The project notes say both Feather V1 and V2 work when their respective pin assignments are followed; they do not establish compatibility for arbitrary substitute boards or panels.

The accessible technical guide is a community GitHub fork that identifies itself as a fork of Valve’s Inkterface project and reproduces its build notes. Valve’s GitLab project page did not provide readable contents for the cited description, so the details here are attributed to that accessible fork rather than presented as independently verified canonical Valve instructions.
