JSAUX lists a Steam Machine-specific E-Ink faceplate and a separate full-color Pixel Matrix faceplate. A community-documented USB LCD monitor is a possible DIY reference, not a confirmed Steam Machine-compatible accessory.
How E-Ink and a small LCD differ as status displays
| What matters | E-Ink front panel | Small LCD-style display |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Mostly static or slowly changing content, such as a clock, calendar, artwork, or glanceable status. | Content that changes frequently, or needs color, animation, or real-time visual feedback. |
| Power and connection | JSAUX lists Bluetooth 5.0 and a built-in 500mAh battery for its E-Ink faceplate. It says static content uses near-zero power. | The cited 3.5-inch USB LCD project connects by USB and can be configured to update every second. Its power draw is not established here and will depend on the specific display. |
| Refresh behavior | JSAUX lists an approximate 500–800 ms refresh time for its E-Ink panel. E-paper performance varies by device and mode; it is not automatically suitable for high-refresh motion. | A small LCD may better suit frequent changes, but refresh rate, brightness, contrast, and software support depend on the exact product. |
| Color and motion | JSAUX describes its E-Ink model as grayscale and supports static image uploads. | LCD is the more natural direction for motion and color, but JSAUX’s color alternative is a Pixel Matrix display, not a conventional LCD. It supports RGB, GIF uploads, and real-time updates. |
| Fit and compatibility | JSAUX says its magnetic E-Ink faceplate is designed for Steam Machine and SteamOS. | The cited USB screen is documented in a DIY SteamOS monitoring build, but that does not establish fit or support on Valve’s Steam Machine. |
These are technology and product distinctions, not results from a head-to-head test. The available sources do not establish comparative brightness, power draw, latency, or image quality.
Steam Machine faceplates JSAUX lists
5.83-inch E-Ink faceplate
JSAUX lists a 5.83-inch panel at 640 × 480 resolution, Bluetooth 5.0, a 500mAh battery, and a magnetic mount. Its product page describes modes for weather, clock, calendar, performance, and game time, as well as static image uploads. The page lists the E-Ink option at $99.99.
JSAUX estimates “up to 22 days of runtime based on one display refresh per minute (1,440 refreshes per day).” That is a manufacturer estimate tied to the stated refresh schedule, not an independently tested result. The company also says the panel itself consumes virtually no power to maintain a static image, with power used primarily during refreshes or updates.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
7-inch Pixel Matrix faceplate
JSAUX lists a 7-inch, 64 × 54 RGB Pixel Matrix faceplate for $89.99. It uses USB-C for power and data, supports real-time updates, and accepts static images and GIFs. JSAUX describes both faceplates as designed for Steam Machine and SteamOS.
Pixel Matrix is the manufacturer’s product description; the available information does not establish that this is an LCD. It is the relevant listed alternative if you want color and animation, but it should not be mislabeled as a conventional LCD display.

A community SteamOS project documents a Turing Smart Screen 3.5-inch USB panel used to show live system statistics on an AMD BC-250. The project specifies a 320 × 480 native resolution and a configurable one-second update interval. It demonstrates a compact USB screen in that particular build; it does not show that the screen is a tested, supported, or physically compatible Steam Machine modification.

If searching for this category, use the phrase “3.5 inch USB LCD system monitor display.” Treat it as a starting point rather than a confirmed Steam Machine accessory. Before choosing a unit, check:
- Whether its connector and USB data support match the intended setup.
- Its mounting dimensions and whether it can physically fit the case or front panel.
- Power requirements and how the display will be powered.
- Display-driver and monitoring-software compatibility with the operating system and hardware.
Valve’s Inkterface repository and its build details could not be verified from the available information. An unofficial information page points to Valve’s project and CAD files, but does not independently establish a parts list, wiring instructions, or Steam Machine compatibility.
