Choose Visio if you need its Windows desktop app, rely on Microsoft 365 or Teams workflows, or work with diagrams that depend on Visio-specific features. Choose Lucidchart if a browser-based collaborative workflow and its integration ecosystem better match your team. Before switching, test your actual diagram types, plan limits, and representative files: importing a Visio diagram does not guarantee that every element will remain editable or behave as expected.
Neither tool is a universal winner. The practical choice depends on what your team needs to create, how it collaborates, and which plan includes the required features.

Microsoft documents Visio’s features and plan differences on its Visio feature comparison. Lucid describes its own integration and collaboration offering on its Visio comparison page; treat claims there about Lucid’s advantages as vendor claims rather than independent test results.
What Visio plans include
Microsoft presents three choices: Visio in Microsoft 365, Visio Plan 1, and Visio Plan 2. They are not interchangeable editions. Microsoft describes the Microsoft 365 experience as a lightweight web app for basic diagrams, Plan 1 as a web app for professional diagramming, and Plan 2 as a web and Windows desktop offering for specialized needs. The features you need—not just the Visio name—determine whether a plan is suitable.

Microsoft’s comparison page lists US annual-subscription prices of $5 per user per month for Plan 1 and $15 per user per month for Plan 2. These are the prices stated on that page, not a universal or permanent price; verify current regional pricing, eligibility, and billing terms before buying.
The comparison also distinguishes capabilities by plan. It identifies the Windows desktop installation and SVG export with Plan 2, and lists certain PowerPoint, Word, and Power Automate workflows as Plan 2 features. It documents real-time co-authoring and comments, saving to OneDrive for Business, Teams diagram collaboration, and viewing or sharing diagrams connected to real-time data for the listed plans. Some adjacent functions require separate Office, Teams, Power BI, or Visio licensing, so verify the prerequisites for the specific workflow rather than assuming every Microsoft integration is included.

Microsoft lists general-purpose templates and cross-functional flowcharts, while access to Azure and AWS shapes is limited to paid plans in its comparison. Use the feature table to check your required diagram types and plan-level functions.
What Lucidchart offers—and what to verify
Lucid identifies Free, Individual, Team, and Enterprise subscription levels on its plan overview. Its support documentation says Visio-file import is available on all four levels, but that does not establish that every other feature is available on every level. Check the current plan boundaries, prices, document limits, collaboration features, and integrations against your needs.

Lucid promotes integrations and collaboration across several third-party apps. Its Visio comparison page also claims a gallery with more than 1,000 customizable templates. Those are Lucid’s own product claims, not independent measurements of breadth or quality. A large template gallery matters only if it includes the diagrams your team actually builds and the relevant templates are available in your plan.
Which tool is better for collaboration?
Base the decision on where your team already works and how it needs to share diagrams. Microsoft’s documentation describes real-time co-authoring, comments, OneDrive for Business saving, and Teams collaboration for the listed Visio web plans. Check the feature comparison and your licensing before relying on a specific Microsoft workflow.

Lucid promotes collaboration through its browser-based canvas and integrations with other apps. If those connections are important, confirm that the exact integration is available in the plan you are considering and fits your team’s workflow. The vendor comparison is not an independent head-to-head assessment, so its breadth claims should not substitute for checking the particular tools and features you use.

A template count cannot tell you whether a tool supports the diagram types, shapes, notation, or workflows your project requires. Start with representative diagrams: for example, a cross-functional process flowchart, an architecture diagram using cloud-provider shapes, or a diagram that depends on a specialized Visio stencil. Then confirm that the selected plan supports the necessary elements and that collaborators can edit the result as intended.

Microsoft’s plan comparison identifies general-purpose templates, cross-functional flowcharts, and paid-plan access to Azure and AWS shapes. Lucid’s template and integration descriptions come from Lucid itself. Compare the libraries and plan restrictions directly for the diagram types your team needs rather than treating template totals as proof that one product is a better fit.
Can Lucidchart replace Visio for existing diagrams?
Lucid says it can import Visio diagrams, but its support guidance warns that the result depends on the export options used by the source tool. Microsoft also says Visio in Microsoft 365 supports .vsdx files but not the older .vsd format. For a .vsdx file, editing in Visio in Microsoft 365 depends on whether the file uses compatible elements; Microsoft’s guidance points to Plan 1 or Plan 2 for editing a .vsdx that uses compatible elements.
For any consequential migration, test a representative set of files before moving the team’s work. Include files with the shapes, connectors, formatting, and specialized elements you rely on. Open the imported diagrams, inspect them, edit them, and check whether collaborators can continue working without losing important behavior. Lucid’s Visio import guidance, Microsoft’s supported diagram types, and its overview of Visio in Microsoft 365 explain the relevant format and compatibility limits.
How to make the decision
- List the diagrams and workflows that matter. Note required diagram types, shapes or stencils, exports, data connections, and editing tasks.
- Match those needs to a specific plan. Compare the Visio plan or Lucidchart subscription you would actually buy; do not compare one product’s entry tier with the other’s highest tier.
- Check your work environment and licensing. Confirm which Microsoft 365, Teams, Office, Power BI, or other licenses your team has, and verify the particular integrations included in each candidate plan.
- Pilot collaboration with the people who will use the diagrams. Test sharing, comments, co-authoring, and the relevant application connections in the workflow your team intends to adopt.
- Test representative files before switching. Import or open copies of real diagrams and check that the elements you need remain usable and editable.
- Verify current pricing and limits. Check regional pricing, eligibility, billing, and plan restrictions on the vendors’ current pages before committing.
Verdict: choose for the work you actually do
Visio is the stronger fit when you need its Windows desktop app, Microsoft-centered workflows, or Visio-specific diagrams and compatibility. Lucidchart is worth evaluating when a browser-based collaborative workflow and its integrations are a better match. If your decision depends on moving existing Visio diagrams, make the choice only after a representative-file pilot shows that the required diagrams remain usable.
