1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRecover abandoned carts by first fixing the reason shoppers leave, then using live chat or a chatbot to resolve questions that remain. Chat can clarify shipping, product details, returns, or checkout steps; it cannot make an unexpected fee acceptable or repair a broken checkout on its own. Treat assistance as one part of checkout improvement, and measure completed orders rather than messages sent.
Start by finding out why shoppers leave
Cart abandonment is not a single behavior with a single fix. Some shoppers are comparing products or browsing without an immediate intention to buy. Others encounter a cost, policy, or usability problem that a store can address. The intervention should follow the reason, not the mere fact that a cart exists.
Baymard Institute reports a 70.19% global average cart abandonment rate, updated February 2, 2025. It is a cross-study average, not a forecast for an individual store. In Baymard’s latest quantitative study cited on its updated research page, 42% of US online shoppers said they had abandoned a cart in the prior three months because “I was just browsing / not ready to buy.” That is a survey result about one reason, not the proportion of all carts that can never be recovered. Baymard’s abandonment research and methodology
Baymard’s updated reason data also show why diagnosis matters: 40% cited extra costs such as shipping, tax, and fees; 20% cited slow delivery; 19% cited distrust of a site with card information; 18% cited required account creation; and 17% cited a long or complicated checkout. Separately, 17% cited website errors or crashes and 13% cited an unsatisfactory returns policy. These reported reasons can overlap, so do not add the percentages together or assume each shopper has only one cause.

Match the cause to a useful response
| What the shopper may be encountering | First response | Where chat can help |
|---|---|---|
| Browsing or not ready to buy | Make product information easy to compare and let the shopper leave without pressure. | Answer a question if asked; avoid treating every idle cart as a request for intervention. |
| Unexpected shipping, tax, or fees | Show the total and delivery costs as early as practical. | Explain the published charges and available delivery choices accurately; do not imply chat removes a fee. |
| Delivery timing or returns uncertainty | Make delivery estimates and returns terms easy to find and understandable. | Answer from current policy information, and pass unusual cases to a person. |
| Trust, payment, or account concerns | Review checkout clarity, available payment methods, and whether account creation is necessary. | Explain the store’s process. Do not ask shoppers to send sensitive payment credentials in chat. |
| Long checkout, errors, or crashes | Investigate the checkout flow and technical failures before adding messaging. | Help a shopper navigate a known issue, but route suspected defects for investigation rather than presenting chat as the fix. |
Use checkout analytics, customer-service conversations, feedback, and optional abandonment surveys to identify recurring questions. Look for patterns by product, device, payment method, and checkout stage where your analytics can reliably distinguish them. A concentration of questions about one delivery option points to a different fix than reports of failed payment submission. Avoid collecting more personal information than needed to understand the problem.
Checkout design itself can be a larger lever than conversational assistance. Baymard estimates a 35.26% potential conversion-rate increase from checkout design improvements based on its checkout usability work. That figure is an estimate of UX opportunity, not a measured result of live chat or chatbot deployment.
Choose between live chat, a chatbot, and a checkout fix
Use live chat when a shopper’s concern needs judgment, clarification, or an exception. Use a chatbot when the question is common, bounded, and answerable from maintained store information. Fix the underlying checkout when the problem is structural. These options can coexist, but they should not obscure who is responsible for resolving a customer’s issue.
| Option | Best fit | Not a substitute for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live chat with a person | Specific pre-purchase questions, uncertainty, or situations requiring judgment | Published cost clarity, functional checkout, or reliable policy pages | Coverage hours, queue expectations, agent access to relevant context, and escalation ownership |
| Chatbot | Repeatable questions with a current, approved answer | Human review of disputes, exceptions, uncertain answers, or sensitive matters | Knowledge source, answer boundaries, handoff behavior, channel availability, and update process |
| Checkout or policy improvement | Recurring friction affecting many shoppers, such as unclear costs or a failing step | Individual assistance when a shopper still needs help | Whether the change resolves the identified cause and whether outcomes improve after release |
Make live chat useful at the moment of uncertainty
Place the invitation where help is relevant
Consider a visible chat entry point on product, cart, and checkout pages, but do not let it obscure product controls or payment actions. A product page visitor may need sizing or compatibility information; a cart visitor may be weighing delivery costs; someone in checkout may need help understanding an available payment or delivery option. Keep the invitation clear and low-pressure rather than interrupting every shopper with a timed prompt.

Set expectations and prepare agents
Show when a person is available and what happens outside staffed hours. If replies are not immediate, say so rather than implying a live response. Give agents current product details, inventory status, delivery estimates, payment information, and returns terms. Establish a process for checking uncertain answers instead of asking staff to improvise policy.
Context can reduce repetitive questions, but only use information the system actually exposes. Shopify says its Inbox conversations can show cart changes and, while the cart is active, subtotal and item quantities. This is a documented product capability, not evidence that the feature increases conversion. Shopify Inbox conversation management
Where cart details are unavailable, ask a brief, relevant question and let the shopper choose what to share. Do not presume that a support agent can see a cart, checkout, or customer record merely because the store uses a chat application. Access depends on the platform and configuration.
Automate repeatable questions without trapping the shopper
Keep the bot’s job narrow and maintain its answers
Good initial chatbot tasks are questions with stable answers, such as where to find a shipping policy, how a published delivery estimate works, or how to locate order tracking. Product recommendations and comparisons may also be appropriate when the underlying product information is reliable. A bot should not invent stock availability, promise a delivery date, or interpret an exception beyond its supported information.

For each automated answer, define its approved source and an owner who updates it when prices, policies, products, or processes change. Test common phrasings, misspellings, and questions that combine multiple issues. If the answer depends on a customer’s order or circumstances, ensure the bot has an appropriate, secure way to retrieve what it needs or route the request to a person.
Make handoff a designed outcome
Provide an obvious human route when the bot is uncertain, the shopper says the answer is wrong, an exception is requested, or the issue involves account or payment concerns. Pass the conversation and any relevant context to the agent so the customer does not need to start over. If no agent is available, explain what happens next and collect only the minimum information needed for follow-up.
Klaviyo describes its Customer Agent as handling brand and product questions, recommendations, order tracking, returns and exchanges, subscriptions, and escalation across configured channels. Those are vendor-described capabilities; availability and behavior depend on configuration, and the description is not independent validation. Klaviyo Customer Agent setup information
Distinguish cart recovery from checkout recovery
A cart abandonment generally means items were added to a cart without the shopper beginning checkout. Checkout abandonment means the shopper started checkout but did not complete the purchase. The distinction matters because platforms may use different events, data requirements, and message flows for each. Confirm the trigger definition before enabling automation.

Klaviyo documents separate abandoned-cart and abandoned-checkout flows. Its prebuilt abandoned-cart flow has a four-hour initial delay. Treat that as a product default, not a universally optimal message schedule. Review the trigger, delay, audience, and suppression logic against your own store’s customer experience before activating a flow. Klaviyo abandoned-cart flow instructions
Shopify’s legacy abandoned-checkout documentation describes a recovery process that applies after a customer supplies an email and is limited to specified sales channels. Because the documentation identifies a legacy experience, merchants should verify the recovery behavior available in their current store rather than assuming the older flow applies to every checkout or sales channel. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Coordinate chat with email and other follow-ups
Before launching a chat prompt or automated recovery message, map the other contacts a shopper may receive. A person who already spoke to support should not receive a contradictory automated answer; a shopper who has purchased should not continue receiving an abandoned-cart nudge for the same items.
- Suppress a cart or checkout recovery message after a completed order.
- Define how chat, email, SMS, and other campaigns share or exclude audiences so a shopper does not receive duplicate nudges.
- Keep message content consistent with current prices, inventory, delivery terms, and return policies.
- Make any recovery link return to a useful cart or checkout state, and verify what happens if an item is no longer available or a cart has changed.
- Check the rules that apply to your messages and audience before deployment. Requirements vary by jurisdiction and channel; the sources cited here do not establish a complete legal standard.
Do not interpret a cart-recovery label in an app listing as proof that an app supports every storefront, sales channel, or checkout event. Shopify’s App Store has a category of chat apps marked as supporting cart recovery, but the listing is a discovery source rather than a comparative test or endorsement. Confirm event support, integrations, permissions, and current pricing directly before choosing an app. Shopify App Store chat apps marked for cart recovery

Measure completed orders and customer experience
A sent message is not a recovered order. A conversation followed by a purchase does not, by itself, prove the conversation caused the purchase. Shoppers may already have intended to return, or may receive other reminders through email and other channels. No standard chat recovery rate or proven best message schedule is established by the sources cited here.
Track the full path, not just activity
- Eligibility: how many shoppers meet the precise cart or checkout trigger, by sales channel and time period.
- Engagement: chat openings, replies, bot interactions, and conversations handed to a person.
- Resolution: whether the question was answered, whether the shopper needed a handoff, and whether the issue was escalated or left unresolved.
- Purchase outcome: completed orders and time to purchase, with a consistent attribution window and rules for other campaigns.
- Quality checks: complaints, cancellations, returns, incorrect answers, and repeated contacts that may reveal a poor recovery experience.
Use a defensible comparison
Set a baseline before changing prompts or flows. Where feasible, compare eligible shoppers exposed to the intervention with a credible control group, while keeping other major campaign changes from confounding the comparison. If a controlled test is not practical, report the method and its limits: for example, orders following a chat interaction are associated with that interaction, not necessarily incremental because of it.
Define what counts as a recovered order before reporting results. Deduplicate orders across chat, email, SMS, and other campaigns; state which event starts the measurement window; and exclude purchases that occurred before the intervention could plausibly act. Review both conversion and customer-experience signals so that a higher message volume is not mistaken for a better outcome.
A practical rollout sequence
- Identify the leading friction. Review checkout analytics, customer questions, feedback, and optional surveys. Separate browsing intent from fixable cost, policy, trust, and usability concerns.
- Fix preventable defects first. Clarify totals and delivery information, improve relevant policy visibility, and investigate errors or unnecessary checkout steps.
- Choose one assistance use case. Assign judgment-heavy or exceptional questions to live agents; automate only repeatable questions with maintained answers.
- Confirm data and channel support. Verify which cart and checkout events are detected, what context agents receive, and which sales channels are included.
- Set handoff and suppression rules. Route uncertainty to a person, prevent follow-up after purchase, and coordinate messages across channels.
- Launch with a baseline and review outcomes. Monitor resolution, completed orders, customer complaints, and other recovery campaigns before expanding the workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can live chat or a chatbot recover every abandoned cart?
No. Some shoppers are browsing or not ready to buy, and chat cannot resolve every underlying pricing, policy, or checkout problem.
Should an abandoned-cart message go out after four hours?
Klaviyo’s prebuilt abandoned-cart flow uses a four-hour initial delay, but that is a product default rather than a proven best timing for every store.
Does a chatbot need a human handoff?
Yes. Give shoppers a route to a person for uncertain answers, disputes, exceptions, or sensitive account and payment concerns.
