There is no single best Copy Ability for every Kirby boss. The right choice depends on the game, the boss’s attack patterns, your preferred way to fight, and whether you have access to an evolved form. For a concrete example, this guide uses Kirby and the Forgotten Land; its advice should not be treated as a ranking for every game in the series.

Start with the game and edition

Kirby can inhale certain enemies and copy their abilities, which can provide weapon-like attacks or transformations. The specific ability roster and how abilities work vary across games, so a recommendation for one title may not apply to another. See the Kirby Official Portal’s Copy Ability overview for the series concept.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a useful worked example because it is a 3D platformer with boss stages and Copy Abilities. Its available forms also depend on edition: Nintendo Life’s guide, updated 2025-08-28, describes 12 upgradeable Copy Abilities in the original game and three additional abilities in the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition’s Star-Crossed World content. Those counts apply to this game and guide, not to the Kirby franchise as a whole. Check the ability blueprint and evolution guide and the walkthrough and boss guide index for edition-specific details.

Compare abilities by how they fit the fight

For a boss in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, compare each candidate on the same four points. This is a practical decision framework based on the game’s documented attack, evasion, evolution, and difficulty mechanics—not a measured damage or matchup ranking.

#1 Best Overall
Kirby™ and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch™ 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World
  • Get a mouthful of real-world objects for powerful transformations
  • Join up with a pointy partner, Bandana Waddle Dee, in co-op play
  • Join Kirby in an upgraded 3D platforming adventure and uncover the mystery of the meteor—only on the Nintendo Switch 2 system!
  • Attack opportunity: Can you land its attacks at the boss’s range and during the openings the boss gives you? A powerful-looking move is not useful if you cannot safely connect with it.
  • Safety: Can the ability help you avoid incoming moves, or can you reliably move out of danger while using it? The game’s guard-to-somersault maneuver is another option: hold L, R, ZL, or ZR to crouch guard, then move the control stick in any direction to somersault, according to Play Nintendo’s gameplay tips. Nintendo also specifically notes that Drill can burrow underground to dodge attacks on its official product page.
  • Execution: Choose moves you can use consistently while tracking the boss. If an ability’s timing or positioning feels awkward, a simpler option may serve you better even if it seems less impressive.
  • Form and progression: Decide whether your choice assumes an evolved ability. Rescuing Waddle Dees unlocks ability evolution, and Nintendo says evolved abilities can be changed back to their normal forms. The same guide also covers blueprints and evolutions, so confirm the form you can actually access.

For a useful comparison, name the game, edition, boss, difficulty, and ability form. Then weigh attack opportunities, safety, and execution for each option. Official guidance does not establish a complete damage, frame-data, or boss-matchup ranking, so do not interpret this framework as proof that one ability deals the most damage or wins every fight.

Adjust for your difficulty and comfort

Kirby and the Forgotten Land has two difficulty modes. Play Nintendo describes Spring-Breeze as a simpler experience with more health and recommends it for players new to action games; Wild Mode is more challenging. A newer player may reasonably prioritize safe openings and moves they can execute comfortably. Someone confident with the boss’s patterns may put more weight on how often an ability can attack. That is a play-style recommendation, not a Nintendo ability ranking.

Make the choice in practice

  1. Identify your version: Check whether you are playing the original game or the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with Star-Crossed World content, since the listed ability roster differs.
  2. Pick a form you have unlocked: If you want an evolved ability, make sure you have the required progression and blueprint rather than planning around an unavailable form.
  3. Watch the boss before committing: Notice its attack range, recovery windows, and moments when it is safe to approach.
  4. Try your candidate against those openings: Favor attacks you can land without sacrificing your ability to dodge. Use guard-to-somersault or an ability-based dodge such as Drill’s burrow where appropriate.
  5. Switch if the execution is costing you openings: A more comfortable ability can be the better personal choice, even without evidence that it has higher damage.

For a recommendation to transfer beyond this example, first specify the Kirby game: its abilities, bosses, editions, and mechanics may differ. Within Kirby and the Forgotten Land, choose for the particular boss and your own execution rather than relying on a franchise-wide tier list.
