Yes. Kolibri’s core software is released under the MIT License, which permits commercial use, modification, redistribution, sublicensing, and sale of copies. If you redistribute copies or substantial portions, include the copyright and permission notices. That permission applies to the software—not automatically to educational content delivered through Kolibri, or to its branding and every bundled dependency.
What the MIT License lets you do
Learning Equality’s Kolibri LICENSE file identifies the software copyright as “Copyright (c) 2021 Learning Equality and other contributors.” Its MIT terms allow people to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and sell copies of the software. That means an organization can use Kolibri as part of a commercial service, adapt it for a paid offering, or sell a product that includes copies, subject to the license conditions.
The central condition is notice preservation: include the copyright and permission notices in copies or substantial portions of the software. The license also provides the software “AS IS,” disclaims warranties, and limits liability. This is a practical explanation of the cited license, not legal advice for a particular product, deployment, or jurisdiction.
Does the MIT license cover Kolibri channel content?
No. Kolibri’s application license does not grant blanket rights to every video, exercise, image, document, or other resource that can be served through the application. The Kolibri channels documentation describes a channel as educational resources and associated metadata, and explains that users can import public channels or curate their own.

For a commercial offering that distributes learning materials, assess the rights for the specific channel and each resource it contains. Check whether commercial distribution is permitted and whether attribution, share-alike, or other conditions apply. The software license alone does not establish the rights for a particular channel, the Kolibri brand, or every third-party dependency bundled with a deployment.
Is the official Kolibri Docker image ready for an online service?
Do not treat the cited container work as a complete production-hosting guide. The project’s official Docker image issue, opened March 24, 2026, describes an initial target of standalone, self-serve use similar to a local installation; online-deployment best practices are explicitly outside its scope.

The issue’s acceptance details call for persistent storage for KOLIBRI_HOME and exposure of both the main server port and the zip-content port. These are relevant when following that container design, but they do not by themselves establish a secure, scalable online architecture. Plan hosting, security, backups, and operational needs separately for your service.
Version, ports, and database defaults
The official Kolibri package listing showed version 0.19.5 and Docker pull instructions for linux/amd64 and linux/arm64 when reviewed. Package tags and architecture support can change, so check the listing for the current release before choosing an image.

In the reviewed source configuration, Kolibri’s default HTTP_PORT is 8080, and its default database setting uses SQLite, as documented in Kolibri deployment options and default settings. These are implementation defaults, not universal requirements or a recommendation that SQLite is appropriate for every deployment size.

Commercial-use checklist
- Decide whether you are using or redistributing Kolibri. The MIT license permits both; redistribution triggers the requirement to preserve the copyright and permission notices in copies or substantial portions.
- Review learning materials separately. Record the license and required attribution for every channel and resource you plan to distribute commercially.
- Check materials beyond the core software. Confirm rights and obligations for branding and bundled third-party dependencies; the cited MIT license does not resolve those questions.
- Match deployment design to your use case. The cited Docker issue concerns standalone use, not production online hosting. For that container design, provide persistent
KOLIBRI_HOMEstorage and expose the documented ports. - Verify the current package details. Confirm the image tag and architecture support in the official package listing at implementation time.
