They do not establish a safe do-it-yourself drinking-water filter. The practical answer: treat coffee-ground biochar as a research material, not a household water-treatment recipe.
How researchers make biochar from spent coffee grounds
Scientific papers usually call used coffee grounds “spent coffee grounds” (SCG). The basic process is to dry the grounds, then heat them while limiting oxygen so they carbonize rather than burn. The exact temperature and process depend on the intended material and contaminant; there is no universally established best setting.
Published protocols illustrate why a kitchen oven, open fire, or improvised container is not equivalent to laboratory pyrolysis:
| Study material | Reported preparation | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Phosphate-study biochar | Torboli et al. dried grounds at 50 °C for 48 hours, then pyrolyzed them in a nitrogen-purged vertical furnace for one hour at temperatures between 300 and 550 °C. The study also tested iron coating. | The favorable result cited below is for iron-coated material under a specific phosphate test. The paper washed material with dichloromethane to address PAHs, then distilled water; this is a laboratory step, not a home instruction. Cleaner Engineering and Technology (2024) |
| University of Washington thesis material | The thesis dried grounds at 90 °C for 42 hours and sieved them. Unactivated biochar was made in a sealed tube furnace purged with nitrogen: 200 °C for one hour, then 400 °C for four hours. | This required laboratory furnace and inert-gas handling. University of Washington thesis (repository record indicates 2026) |
| KOH-activated thesis material | For a separate activated sample, the thesis used a 1:1 KOH-to-biochar ratio, heated it to 800 °C for 30 minutes, then repeatedly washed it with dilute hydrochloric acid until pH 7. | Caustic activation, high-temperature processing, and acid washing make this a research procedure, not a casual household treatment. University of Washington thesis (repository record indicates 2026) |
These methods cannot be collapsed into one recipe: feedstock, activation, temperature, atmosphere, and target pollutant differ. In particular, 450 °C was favorable in one phosphate experiment only for iron-coated material under that study’s test conditions.

What the filtration studies actually show
Adsorption means that a substance attaches to a material under specified conditions. It does not mean that a filter removes every hazard or that the treated water is safe to drink. Results across different papers should not be compared as if their solutions, pH values, reactors, and measurement methods were identical.
| Target | Reported laboratory result | What it does—and does not—mean |
|---|---|---|
| Phosphate | Torboli et al. reported a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.87 mg P/g for biochar made at 450 °C with an Fe/biochar mass ratio of 2:1, at an initial phosphate concentration of 15 mg P/L. Reported removal efficiency was 5.7% for unactivated material and up to 17.3% for iron-activated material. | These are that paper’s experimental figures, not expected results from homemade media. The authors describe potential for recovering Fe-phosphate-enriched biochar; they do not establish a household drinking-water filter. Cleaner Engineering and Technology (2024) |
| Lead, manganese, cadmium | A 2020 study reported maximum adsorption values for biochar of 22.3 mg/g lead, 19.6 mg/g manganese, and 19.4 mg/g cadmium. For raw spent grounds, corresponding values were 13.6, 13.0, and 11.0 mg/g. | Measurements came from prepared aqueous solutions and the study’s reactor and sorption conditions; they do not establish performance in a home filter or across real source waters. Materials (Basel), 2020 |
| Selected organic compounds | A 2025 ACS Omega paper reported up to 100% removal of selected compounds in aqueous laboratory tests using magnesium-carbonate-activated coffee-derived material. | Performance depended on pH and test setup. The result does not establish field performance or drinking-water safety. ACS Omega (2025) |
| Mixed compounds and natural organic matter | The University of Washington thesis found differing behavior for unactivated and KOH-activated samples and reported that mixed compounds and natural organic matter could affect outcomes. | Competition between substances matters: performance against one compound alone does not predict performance in a more complex water matrix. These were batch tests, not proof of a working consumer filter. University of Washington thesis (repository record indicates 2026) |
Why this is not a safe DIY drinking-water filter
The studies provide evidence of contaminant-specific adsorption in defined tests. They do not validate a complete treatment system, repeated-use performance, reliable microbial removal, safety across different source waters, or potability. A material that reduces one measured pollutant may leave pathogens or other chemicals untouched; its performance can also change when competing compounds or natural organic matter are present.

- FOR BETTER TASTING BEVERAGES: Replace the Keurig water filter every 2 months or every 60 water tank refills, replace it more often, if you have hard water in your area.
- Do not assume that clear-looking water is safe, or that pH alone demonstrates safety.
- Do not use homemade coffee-ground biochar as a substitute for treatment validated for the hazards in your water.
- For a real treatment decision, identify the contaminant of concern and use appropriate water testing and a treatment method validated for that contaminant.
Testing a real application requires more than checking appearance or pH: the contaminant, water matrix, contact conditions, and performance over use all matter. The published batch-test results do not supply those validations for a homemade filter.

- Target contaminant: phosphate, a particular metal, or a specific organic compound; results for one do not establish removal of another.
- Material and process: unactivated versus chemically modified biochar, pyrolysis atmosphere and temperature, and any coating or activation chemistry.
- Water conditions: pH, competing contaminants, and natural organic matter can affect adsorption.
- Test design: a batch test is not the same as water flowing through a filter column, and a single test does not establish capacity over repeated use.
- Safety endpoints: contaminant reduction alone does not prove microbial control or that treated water meets drinking-water requirements.
Without contaminant-specific testing of the complete treatment setup, claims that a homemade coffee-biochar filter makes water potable go beyond the evidence.
