The most useful way to learn SQL for data analysis is to practise in one database environment, moving from filtering rows to summarizing and combining data, then building a small analysis that answers real questions. Learning syntax is only part of the work: you also need to check whether each query returns the right records and whether its result actually answers the question.
Choose one place to practise SQL
Start with a learning environment you can use consistently. Browser-based courses reduce setup, while a database tutorial can help if you already know which system you want to learn. These resources use different database environments, so treat examples as specific to their course rather than assuming every detail will transfer unchanged.
| Resource | Environment | Practice and scope | Published estimate or cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaggle Intro to SQL | Google BigQuery | Guided lessons covering basic queries, grouping, sorting, aliases, CTEs, and joins. | The page lists no cost and estimates three hours; this is a course estimate, not a prediction of mastery. |
| Kaggle Advanced SQL | Google BigQuery | Further practice with joins and unions, analytic functions, nested and repeated data, and efficient queries. | The page lists no cost and estimates four hours; this is a course estimate, not a prediction of mastery. |
| Harvard CS50’s Introduction to Databases with SQL | Begins with SQLite and later introduces PostgreSQL and MySQL. | Course assignments are inspired by real-world datasets. | The cited course page does not state an estimate here. |
| PostgreSQL 17 tutorial | PostgreSQL 17 | Official introductory tutorial that points to further language documentation. | The cited tutorial does not state a course duration or cost. |
| Google Cloud Skills Boost BigQuery SQL lab | BigQuery | Describes a lab using a public London bikeshare dataset. | Current availability and terms should be checked on the lab page. |
If you are unsure, a browser course is a straightforward start because it avoids making local database setup your first hurdle. Choose one route for now; learn the environment’s details when a query calls for them.
Learn the query skills in a useful order
1. Retrieve, filter, sort, and limit rows
Begin with SELECT to choose columns, FROM to identify a table, and WHERE to filter rows. Then practise sorting with ORDER BY and limiting results when you need to inspect a sample. Before writing a query, name the rows you expect to see and the conditions they must meet.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For example, if a table contains orders, you might ask for the order date and amount for orders above a chosen threshold, sorted from newest to oldest. The exact table and column names depend on the dataset; the useful habit is translating the question into selected columns, a source table, a filter, and a sort.
2. Summarize with aggregates and groups
Learn aggregate functions such as COUNT, then use GROUP BY to produce summaries by category, date, or another dimension. Use HAVING when the condition applies to a group summary rather than to individual source rows.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Decide what one output row should represent before writing the query. For example, “orders by month” means one result row per month; “orders by month and region” means one row per month-region combination. This makes it easier to select the right grouping columns and to notice when the output grain does not match the question.
3. Join related tables carefully
Once single-table filters and summaries feel manageable, practise joins. Identify the key that relates the tables, then check the output row count and inspect a few joined records. A join can duplicate records when a key matches multiple rows, quietly inflating counts or totals. If a result changes unexpectedly after a join, verify the key relationship and how many matches each source row has.

4. Make multi-step queries easier to inspect
Use aliases to give tables or calculated expressions clearer names. Then learn common table expressions (CTEs), introduced with WITH, to break a longer analysis into named steps. A CTE can separate filtering from aggregation, making it easier to check each stage and revise the query when the question changes.
5. Add subqueries and analytical functions
After the foundations, study subqueries and window or analytic functions. Practise with questions that make their purpose concrete: rank products within each category, calculate a running total over time, or compare a row with the other rows in its group. State what each output row represents and what comparison the query should show before choosing a function.

- Write the question in plain language. Be specific about the measure, population, date range, and comparison you want.
- Define the output shape. Decide what one row represents and which columns or measures belong in the result.
- Write the query in stages. Start with the relevant rows, add summaries or joins, and use a CTE if it clarifies a multi-step query.
- Check the result. Inspect sample rows, row counts, group totals, and join keys. Ask whether the output plausibly answers the stated question.
- Write a short explanation. Record the question, query, main result, and one limitation, such as missing dates or a category not represented in the data.
This process develops the analytical judgment that a completed lesson alone cannot demonstrate: choosing the right rows, grouping, and relationships for a question, then checking the result.
How long does it take to learn SQL for analysis?
There is no supported universal number of hours or days for becoming proficient. The three-hour and four-hour figures listed on Kaggle’s introductory and advanced course pages are estimates for those courses, not evidence that a learner will be ready to analyse data independently after that time. Progress depends on how much you practise and how complex the questions and datasets are.
Rather than using a deadline as proof of skill, test yourself by taking a question you have not already followed in a lesson, writing a query, and explaining what its output does and does not establish.
