Wipe away residue with a clean cloth and let the shoes air-dry. Test first in a hidden spot: leather coatings differ, and harder scrubbing can dull or damage a finish rather than clean it.
Check the material and care instructions first
White sneakers are not necessarily made with finished leather throughout; panels may use different materials or coatings. Check the shoe maker’s care instructions and identify the material before cleaning. Follow those instructions if they differ from the method below.
Choose a cleaner labeled suitable for the shoe’s material and finish. Guidance from Jason Markk’s leather-shoe tutorial describes dry brushing, applying cleaning solution, scrubbing, wiping, and air-drying. Its care-kit directions likewise recommend a microfiber towel and air-drying for white sneakers (Jason Markk).
Clean scuffs and surface stains gently
- Brush away dry soil. Use a clean, soft, dry brush so grit is not dragged across the leather.
- Spot-test the cleaner. Apply a small amount to a discreet area and follow the cleaner’s directions. Stop if color transfers, the finish dulls, or the surface changes.
- Work on the mark. Put a small amount of material-suitable cleaner on a soft brush, or use it as its label directs. Clean the soiled area gently; do not assume that extra pressure will help.
- Wipe and air-dry. Use a clean cloth—microfiber is suggested in Jason Markk’s white-sneaker care instructions—to remove remaining soil and solution. Leave the shoes to air-dry.
Start with the least aggressive approach: a clean damp cloth or an appropriate cleaner and soft brush. Nike’s Austria guidance mentions a Magic Eraser for white leather shoes, but this is not evidence that it is safe for every leather coating. If you consider one, test discreetly and use it very gently. Nike also cautions against bleach on delicate materials such as leather or suede; do not apply canvas-whitening advice to leather (Nike Austria).

Know when a mark may not clean off
There is no reliable all-purpose home recipe established for ink, oil, or dye transfer across leather finishes. Jason Markk cautions that a treatment suitable for durable plastic or rubber may pull dye or paint from leather and fabric (Jason Markk). For a persistent mark, or a valuable pair, check the shoe and cleaner instructions or consult a leather-care professional rather than experimenting with solvents or household treatments.
Discoloration that remains after gentle cleaning may be damage to the finish or a set stain, not surface dirt. Cleaning cannot be guaranteed to restore the original color. adidas US quotes color and material designer Charlie Kirihara saying, “The leather on most Superstars is tough enough to go through quite a bit of scrubbing and not show any scratches or scuffs.” That statement is specifically about the leather on most Superstars; it does not establish that other leather sneakers can tolerate hard scrubbing (adidas US).

Treat yellowed soles as a different problem
Yellowing on a rubber or plastic sole may be oxidation rather than dirt. Jason Markk explains that UV rays can accelerate oxidation and that, once it occurs, it may not be possible to reverse; cleaning may still remove dirt and stains (Jason Markk). Cleaning a leather upper and reversing aged sole discoloration are separate tasks.

Keep white sneakers cleaner between wears
- Remove fresh dirt promptly using a method suitable for the shoe’s material.
- Store sneakers away from dirt, moisture, and excessive sunlight, as Jason Markk’s care guidance advises (Jason Markk).
- If you use a stain-repellent spray, first verify it is compatible with your shoe’s finish and follow its label directions. It is optional prevention, not a way to remove existing marks.
