Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

It gives you a clear introduction to the wasteland through a protagonist emerging from Vault 111, then lets you explore the Commonwealth, meet companions, join factions, and build settlements. That is a practical recommendation, not a claim that it is objectively the best Fallout game. If faction politics, multiplayer, or classic turn-based combat is what interests you most, a different game may be a better first pick.
Which Fallout game should you play first?
Choose based on the experience you want, rather than release date. Bethesda’s Fallout game guide presents the entries as different settings and premises, and recommends them according to player preference.
- Choose Fallout 4 for a modern single-player open-world introduction, with exploration, companions, factions, and settlement-building.
- Choose Fallout: New Vegas if the Courier story, rival factions, and the Mojave are the main draw.
- Choose Fallout 76 if you want multiplayer-focused exploration and the option to join other players—or play solo.
- Choose Fallout (the original) if you specifically want strategic, turn-based combat and an older role-playing format.
- Choose Fallout 3 if the Capital Wasteland is the setting you most want to explore.
These are preference-based starting points, not rankings of quality or difficulty.
Is Fallout 4 a good first Fallout game?
Yes, if you want a contemporary open-world, single-player experience. Bethesda’s setup for Fallout 4 follows the Sole Survivor after leaving Vault 111 to explore the Commonwealth. The game also emphasizes settlements, companions, and factions, giving newcomers several ways to engage with its world. Bethesda’s selection guide and Fallout 4 page support that framing.

For a current edition, Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition includes the base game, six official expansions, and more than 150 Creation Club items, according to Bethesda. Its February 24, 2026 announcement lists it for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch 2. Bethesda describes the Switch 2 physical package as code-in-box; it is not a game cartridge. See the February 2026 announcement for the edition and platform details.
Should you play Fallout in order?
No. You do not need to begin with the original game or follow release order to choose a first Fallout. The official game descriptions establish distinct protagonists, settings, and play experiences; they do not make release order a prerequisite for a newcomer. Start with the entry that best matches what you enjoy. Play in release order if you specifically want to trace how the series changed over time.

Should you play Fallout: New Vegas or Fallout 4 first?
Pick New Vegas if the Courier’s story, Mojave setting, and rival factions appeal most. Pick Fallout 4 if you would rather start with the Sole Survivor’s journey through the Commonwealth and want settlement-building alongside exploration. Bethesda’s guide describes the two games in those terms; this choice is about the kind of story and activities you want, not a universal verdict on which is better.
What if you want multiplayer or classic turn-based play?
Fallout 76: multiplayer-focused, not group-required
Fallout 76 takes place in Appalachia, 25 years after the bombs. Bethesda describes it as a multiplayer experience, and its original reveal says players can play solo or band together. Bethesda’s guide puts it directly: “If you prefer a multiplayer experience, Fallout 76 is the game for you.” That is the publisher’s recommendation framing, not a requirement to play with a group. See Bethesda’s game guide and original reveal.

Fallout: strategic, turn-based combat
The original Fallout centers on a Vault 13 water-chip quest and features targeted body-part combat, as described by Bethesda. Choose it first if that strategic, turn-based style and older RPG format are what you want—not simply because it came first. Bethesda’s game page outlines its premise.
Fallout 3: the Capital Wasteland
Fallout 3 is the choice if you want to leave Vault 101 and explore the Capital Wasteland, the setting highlighted on Bethesda’s franchise page.
