Moxie Marlinspike said he stepped down as Signal’s CEO because the organization had grown into a team that could operate and expand without relying on his day-to-day involvement. In his January 10, 2022 announcement, he said Brian Acton would serve as interim CEO while Signal searched for a successor, and that he would remain on the board.

Why did Moxie Marlinspike leave the CEO role?

Marlinspike’s stated reason was that Signal had matured enough for him to replace himself. He wrote that he had worked on Signal for almost a decade and wanted it to continue and grow beyond his involvement. In the early years, he said, he wrote Android and server code, was the only person on call, facilitated product development, and managed everyone.

He said he had spent four years changing that arrangement by building a larger team and management structure. He was now comfortable stepping away from daily leadership because of the team in place. As he put it in Signal’s January 10, 2022 announcement: “It’s a new year, and I’ve decided it’s a good time to replace myself as the CEO of Signal.”

Who took over, and what was the transition plan?

Brian Acton volunteered to serve as interim CEO while Signal looked for a successor. Marlinspike said he had been discussing possible candidates for several months and wanted to broaden the search. He expected to transition out over the following month, while remaining on Signal’s board. Acton’s role was explicitly interim; the announcement did not present him as Marlinspike’s permanent replacement.

Did MobileCoin cause Marlinspike’s departure?

Signal’s announcement did not identify MobileCoin as a reason for the leadership change. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report discussed a possible connection to Signal’s MobileCoin payment experiment, but that was the outlet’s speculation, not a cause confirmed by Marlinspike or Signal.

What is Marlinspike’s role at Signal now?

Signal Foundation’s current official site lists Marlinspike as the organization’s founder emeritus. It identifies Meredith Whittaker as Signal’s President and a Foundation board member. The site describes the Foundation as a nonprofit parent formed to support Signal Messenger. These current descriptions should not be confused with the temporary CEO arrangement announced in 2022; the page does not establish the present CEO title.
